Actor Amar Upadhyay, who made his stint as Mihir Virani in `Kyunkii Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi` recalled the time his character died on the show. In the show, Amar was paired opposite actor-turned-politician Smriti Irani, who played Tulsi. In a recent interview, Amar opened up on how his fans reacted to the same, which also led to women gathering around his house in white sarees.

In an interview with ABP Live, Amar recalled, “Ektaa (Kapoor) had hyped the entire episode of Mihir dying so much that when it finally happened, it was chaos all over. When the episode first aired, I remember my mother watching it and crying and I was like, `I am alive, sitting right next to you`. Late in the night, I got a call from Balaji Telefilms that their email servers had crashed and telephone lines were jammed as there was a massive outcry over Mihir`s death.”

He added, “I went to their office at 2 am and answered multiple phone calls assuring people I was very much alive and it was only my character that had died. The next two days just passed by in a haze.”

Sharing another incident, Amar said, “I woke up and the doorbell rang. 15-20 women were standing outside my house, all dressed in white sarees. As they saw me, they were shocked. When my mother prodded them further, they said that they had come to mourn Mihir`s death. My mother was furious. She scolded them and shooed them away.”

Danish actress Connie Nielsen, who returns to the role of Lucilla in `Gladiator 2`, admitted she is a huge fan of Indian music. In an interview with IANS, Nielsen revealed that her playlist is filled with many classic Indian songs and expressed her deep admiration for both Indian cinema and music. While Connie acknowledged that she often struggles with remembering names, especially during interviews, her passion for Indian culture was undeniable.

When asked if she has seen any Indian films or is familiar with any Indian actors or their work, Connie shared, “Yes, I have watched a lot. The only thing I have to say is that I am one of those people who struggle to remember names, especially during interviews. I just go blank on everything. But I am a huge fan, not just of Indian films, but also of Indian music—I’m crazy about it. My playlist is filled with many classic Indian songs. I love Indian movies in general, and obviously, they are incredible. Additionally, female directors are so inspiring, and the storytelling is haunting. I must say, I am a big fan of Indian culture, and it’s just amazing.”

Talking about returning to `Gladiator 2`, the ‘Wonder Woman’ star expressed, “My feelings upon arriving back in Malta and walking up this ancient fort were overwhelming. I couldn’t help but remember the first time I walked up the same hill to the ancient limestone fort and saw the Colosseum rising in front of me.”

“I recall back in the day when Withley was walking towards me, chomping on a cigar, always smiling a little slyly, as he does. Then he asked, ‘What do you think?’ This time, as I was coming up again, it felt almost unbelievable to be having the same experience. But, of course, it wasn’t exactly the same because you can never step into the same river twice. Still, stepping into a new version of that experience was incredible, and I was deeply moved,” Nielsen further mentioned.

The 59-year-old actress portrayed Lucilla, the daughter of Emperor Marcus Aurelius (Richard Harris), in the original `Gladiator` film 24 years ago. In a shocking twist, her character was killed by her brother, Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix).

`Gladiator 2` sees Nielsen return to the role of Lucilla, now the mother of Paul Mescal’s Lucius. The movie was released in UK cinemas on November 15 and will be released in US cinemas on November 22.

For Sushmita Sen, a career in acting was never a part of the plan. Shortly after winning the Miss Universe title in 1994, she built a home and life in Los Angeles for three years. She was financially independent at a young age. She had a career in modelling sorted, perhaps looking at entrepreneurship thereafter.

It was while she was visiting her parents in Delhi at one point time that filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt called her to meet, since he happened to be in the city. She told him over the phone, “If it’s for a role, I’m not interested. I can’t lie. It’ll show on camera.” Bhatt insisted they have coffee, nonetheless. They met and he told her a few things flatly, “You don’t have to act. You have to play yourself, that is Sushmita Sen. Also, when did I say you’re a good actor, I’m a damn good director.”

The film he had in mind was about a Miss Universe getting stalked, which became Dastak (1996), a big-budget production, shot in Seychelles, Switzerland… It was the only film Sen planned to act in. She had thought she`d do this one film, and that`s it. 

Without any prep – no dialogue coaches, workshops, acting instructor – she was, right away, called in for the film’s mahurat. She recalls, “I had mugged up my lines. I came out of the [vanity] van, and there were 40 media persons lined up for the shot. Bhatt Saab said, ‘Let them watch. It’s after all Miss Universe’s mahurat. Before I was to give my shot, he changed my entire scene.

“It became about a woman dealing with a man lunching at a morgue, from whom she has to collect a dead body. I was 22. No acting experience. For two years, I’d been professionally trained to be a lady. Here, I was to show aggression, that I don’t understand, throwing my earrings at the morgue man. I wasn’t getting it right. Bhatt Saab began to tell [brother-partner] Mukesh, ‘Yeh kisko leke aaye ho? She doesn’t know anything!”

It’s at this point she broke. She told Bhatt off, “I told you I can’t act. I’m done. You can’t insult me, in front of all these people.” There was a showdown. Bhatt retorted, “That’s the anger [I was looking for]. Now show it in the film.”

“This is where Bhatt Saab is Bhatt Saab,” Sushmita recalled. That wasn`t all. The posse of `media folk` around her were actually junior artistes, brought in, holding cameras, pretending to be press. 

From thereon, Dastak got almost entirely shot with her first takes, given how raw she was, as a performer, and how she might start looking fake during too many retakes.
