Maintaining power while meeting the huge expectations attached to Vijay’s political image may prove more difficult

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay’s Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) may have changed the state’s political script by harnessing celebrity power, public anger and anti-incumbency sentiment into a landslide election victory, but the real fight begins now.

It was a challenge to conquer Fort St. George, the administrative center of Tamil Nadu, which houses the Legislative Assembly, the Fort Museum and St. Mary’s Church. Maintaining power while meeting the huge expectations attached to Vijay’s political image may prove much more difficult.

for joseph VictoryUnder the government’s leadership, the first six months will not just be about governance – they will be about legitimacy. Vijay’s immediate challenge will be to strengthen the cabinet, balance internal interests, appoint credible bureaucrats, fulfill symbolic promises and establish administrative authority. Tamil Nadu’s political class – from DMK to AIADMK – will be keeping a close eye on any sign that TVK may be electorally disruptive but administratively weak. Vijay’s transformation from a political outsider to an administrator begins here.

Managing public expectations may soon become TVK’s first major political area. Vijay’s rise was fueled by extraordinary public enthusiasm, youth support and personal credibility, but that same emotional investment can become unsustainable if the delivery falters. Voters will expect immediate action – campaign promises fulfilled, visible change in governance, faster welfare delivery, jobs, price controls and strong governance. Unlike traditional parties, which often govern with moderate expectations, TVK enters office carrying the burden of the politics of hope, where even small delays can be seen as betrayal.

first step is right

To of victory To his credit, his first major actions were clearly designed to introduce a government of speed, welfare and visible improvement. The sanction of 200 units of free electricity to all domestic consumers was an overt populist welfare gesture aimed at providing immediate household relief. Responding to gender safety, Vijay also announced a special women’s security force and a dedicated helpline.

Anti-narcotics task forces were created in each city and district as part of a statewide crackdown on narcotics. His call for a white paper on Tamil Nadu’s finances and debt burden signals both transparency and a political strategic effort to undercut the fiscal legacy his government inherited. The closure of 717 TASMAC shops near schools and religious institutions added another powerful symbolic move, blending social optics with regulation.

These early decisions showed that Vijay wanted TVK to appear welfare-driven, reformist and action-oriented from day one.

Yet before these moves could fully define his administration, the government became embroiled in avoidable controversies that showed how quickly symbolism can turn into political damage.

Controversy

Firstly, astrologer Ricky Radhan Pandit Vetrivel was appointed as Officer on Special Duty (Political) to the Chief Minister. What could have been the purpose? political The gesture soon became one of TVK’s early embarrassments. The reaction was immediate, not only from opposition parties but also from allies like the VCK and the Left. This appointment was challenged in the Madras High Court, with the petitioners arguing that promoting an astrologer to the chief advisor role violated the constitutional principle of scientific temper.

Just hours after winning the floor test, the government had to make a hasty retreat and the appointment was cancelled.

This episode raised big questions on the decision. Vetrivel’s prominence came largely from his prediction of a political “tsunami” of victory, and former Chief Minister J. Scrutiny over his past as Jayalalitha’s astrologer only intensified, especially after his assurances in the disproportionate assets case proved disastrously wrong.

If the Vetrivel controversy raised questions about the decision, Vijay’s swearing-in ceremony gave rise to something even more politically explosive – Tamil identity.

On the day Vijay took oath, a controversy broke out over the singing of the third Tamil Tamil Thai Vazhthu after Vande Mataram and Jana Gana Mana.

In Tamil Nadu, this will never be dismissed as a procedural issue.

For decades, the Tamil Thai Vazhthu has traditionally initiated state ceremonies, symbolically placing Tamil identity first, while concluding the proceedings with the national anthem. At Vijay’s swearing-in, that order was disrupted, triggering an immediate reaction in a state where language and regional identity are deeply political.

The criticism was sharp and politically inconvenient as it came not only from the DMK but also from parties supporting the TVK. CPI’s M. Veerapandian strongly objected, VCK chief Thol Thirumavalavan condemned the move, PMK founder S. Ramadoss sought to restore protocol, and the DMK aggressively used the controversy to accuse Vijay of ideological leanings towards the BJP.

TVK immediately went into damage control, with Adhav Arjun distancing the government from the changed sequence and blaming Raj Bhavan for acting under a Central government circular.

But politically the damage had already been done.

For Vijay, these twin controversies – one over superstition, the other over Tamil identity – were an early reminder that governance in Tamil Nadu is not just administrative. It is deeply symbolic, emotional and political.

Challenges: Finance, Jobs, Investment and Center

Beyond these symbolic missteps lies an even bigger challenge – the fiscal reality of Tamil Nadu. Meaning of debt burden on the state Victory One cannot rule on charisma or welfare approach alone. His administration will need to fund welfare schemes, manage subsidies, raise revenues, attract investments and maintain fiscal discipline without triggering a public backlash. Fiscal discipline versus populism could become one of the defining contradictions of Vijay’s rule.

Employment and youth aspirations will likely remain central to TVK’s long-term survival. Tamil Nadu’s large educated youth population will demand private sector jobs, startup opportunities, skill development and better salaries. Graduate unemployment or underemployment can quickly become politically explosive. If TVK fails to translate public hope into economic dynamism, it risks alienating one of its strongest support bases.

Industrial growth and investment retention will be another major battleground. Tamil Nadu will have to maintain its position as a manufacturing and industrial hub, competing with Karnataka, Telangana and Gujarat. Vijay’s government will need to protect and expand sectors such as EV manufacturing, semiconductors, AI and tech parks, renewable energy and electronics exports. Investor confidence will depend not on political charisma but on policy stability.

Water and power management may become one of the most visible governance tests. Tamil Nadu’s recurring issues – water scarcity, monsoon dependence, floods, irrigation stress and rising power demand – cannot be resolved through political drama. Chennai, Coimbatore and Madurai will remain under immense pressure on infrastructure, flood mitigation, traffic and climate resilience.

There will be an equally big threat to law and order. Administrative reshuffles, allegations of political vendetta, caste tensions, communal sensitivities, misinformation and opposition mobilization will all test whether the TVK can remain a genuine alternative without slipping into the same patterns of the old order.

Centre-state relations could become one of Vijay’s most politically sensitive balancing acts. GST compensation, central funding, infrastructure clearance, NEET, language policy and federal powers will all shape their equation with New Delhi. Victory Tamil interests would be expected to be strongly defended, but excessive confrontation could complicate governance.

The NEET issue remains particularly volatile. In Tamil Nadu, this is not just an education debate, but a politically charged question of social justice, rural access and state rights. There will be pressure on Vijay to move beyond rhetoric and take meaningful political action.

Urban infrastructure can become a daily referendum on the efficacy of TVK. Chennai, Coimbatore and Madurai are facing increasing pressure on traffic, metro expansion, housing, waste management and flood control. While ideological battles dominate the headlines, infrastructure shapes everyday voter perception.

Finally, Joseph Victory-The LED TVK government is not entering office as just another elected administration. It enters as a political experiment involving disruption, symbolism and extraordinary public expectations.

Vijay has sold hope, change and transformation. But Tamil Nadu’s political history is clear – charisma may win power, but governance is what keeps it.

For the TVK, defeating the old order was only the beginning. Now the real challenge is to prove that she can rule better. Popularity creates momentum in the opposition. In the office, performance determines survival.
