After a month of using the Philips One-Step Hair Straightener, here’s what surprised me

Thick and curly hair comes with many challenges. I personally have really curly, wavy, and sometimes crazy curls, and I can vouch for that. Although I am not a fan of hair care tools, once in a while, just to experiment with my look, I don’t mind trying out hair tools to control my frizz and give me smooth and straight hair. In recent times, I’ve tried almost everything from hair straightening brushes to keratin-infused straighteners, and for a long time, I even resorted to hair-smoothing.

While these hair care tools were a short-term investment that would last until the next wash, hair treatments often damaged the hair if done too frequently. So, when I got the Philips One Stroke Straightener, I was convinced that it would definitely do some good. And after using it on my curly, thick hair for a month (not regularly), this is my honest opinion.

first impression

The very first look of this hair straightener took my breath away. Its lavender shade exudes such femininity and is extremely pleasing to the eyes. The straightener feels sturdy and comfortable to hold. It comes with multiple temperature settings, which is useful because different hair types require different heat levels. I usually style my hair at high temperatures because my hair is thick and difficult to manage.

It comes with smooth ceramic plates, ThermoShield technology and Ionic Care, which are designed to reduce frizz and provide better results. These smooth plates help the straightener glide smoothly through the hair, so you can spend less time styling and more time enjoying the same great results.

What I like about Philips One Stroke Straightener

Frizz-control and temperature settings

What impressed me most about this straightener was the frizz control. Although it took time to style my hair, after styling my hair looked smoother and shinier than usual. The ionic care technology seems to help reduce hair fall, and my hair feels much softer than when I used some of the older straighteners. The best thing about the straightener is its temperature control settings. As per your needs, you can set the temperature settings from 120°C to 230°C. Depending on my hair type, I kept it between 200°C and 230°C for maximum results.

Quick heating with long plates

The straightener heats up quickly, saving some prep time. I also liked the longer ceramic plates because they cover larger sections of hair at once. Philips claims that the One Stroke technology helps straighten hair faster, and this may be true even with thin or slightly wavy hair. On my hair type, although it didn’t get done in one fell swoop, I had to use plates regularly, but the results looked natural rather than extremely flat.

effect lasting three days

As the brand claims, the results last for 3 days, and I would give it a second place. Even with my heavily textured hair, my hair remained smooth and straight for 3 days, in fact, until my next wash. Even in humid conditions my hair remained manageable and less frizzy. While it didn’t stay completely straight for several days, it definitely made my hair easier to handle and style, though again, I wasn’t expecting a salon-like finish.

Easily portable and travel-friendly

Weighing around 480 grams, the straightener is easy to carry and can easily make some space in your cabin luggage. So, if you are a frequent traveler and need your styling tool on the go, this is a big hit. Another icing on the cake is that it comes with a heat-protective mat, which you can use on any bedsheet or sofa surface to prevent burns.

What could be improved on the Philips One Stroke straightener

One time claim is not for thick hair

While the brand claims fast styling and one-stroke straightening, my experience was a little different as thick hair usually requires more effort than thin or slightly wavy hair. One stroke was not enough to get the smooth look I wanted. I had to read each section two to three times to get better results. Because of this, the styling process wasn’t very fast for me. If your hair is like mine, you shouldn’t expect salon-straight hair in just one go.

Less hair fall is not practically true

Philips claims that their 35% smoother plates guarantee less hair fall; However, this is not true in practice. I noticed hair fall while using the tool, but again, it also depends on the weather conditions and the health of the hair. But you can expect some strands of hair to fall onto the couch or floor while styling.

premium pricing

Unlike Philips flagship or other hair straighteners or straightening brushes under other brands, it is priced in the premium segment. ₹Rs 6,763 on Amazon.in. So, if you are one of those people who doesn’t need styling tools frequently, this might be a bit heavy on your pocket.

slight burning smell

This isn’t a definite reason why you should give this straightener a pass, but I did notice a slight burning smell while straightening my hair, and for those who style frequently, this may be a turn off. However, burning smell is quite common in other straighteners as well.

overall experience

Overall, I think the Philips One Stroke Straightener is a good choice for everyday styling. It offers smooth results, good frizz control, and useful features. However, if you have very thick hair like me, don’t expect the promise of “one stroke” to work exactly as advertised. You may still need several passes to achieve the desired results. Still, the end results are clean, polished, and suitable for daily use. However, it comes with premium pricing, which may be a concern for those who don’t want to spend a lot on hair styling tools.
