CSK vs KKR IPL 2026 preview: Predicted XI, livestreaming, pitch report, weather forecast

Timing in cricket is everything, and the schedule-makers have served up a poetic backdrop for Tuesday’s clash at Chepauk. As the city of Chennai celebrates Tamil New Year (Puthandu), the visiting Kolkata Knight Riders stand on the doorstep of Poila Baisakh. But for one of these powerhouse franchises, the festivities are destined to end in a sporting hangover.

While the yellow-clad faithful hope the New Year brings a change in fortune for the Chennai Super Kings, KKR risk waking up to their own celebrations on Wednesday morning nursing the sting of defeat. With the stands packed and the stakes soaring, only one side will carry the festive spirit into the night.

Kolkata Knight Riders have been a believable team in this edition of the Indian Premier League. They have played a level of cricket that is from this world. And their fans believe that they are stoppable on most days.

KKR have played four games and are yet to win a match this season. They would probably have lost 4 in 4, had rain not intervened at the Eden Gardens against last year’s finalists, Punjab Kings.

The 2024 winners have had a sharp fall since winning their third title, which they will be desperate to arrest when they face Chennai Super Kings on Tuesday, April 14, at the MA Chidambaram Stadium.

If KKR are believable and stoppable, CSK are not far from it. A mega rejig of the team has seen them tottering at the bottom of the table last season. The theme continued at the start of IPL 2026 as well, till their marquee signing Sanju Samson decided to show up against Delhi Capitals in their last game.

Samson’s unbeaten 115 off 56 balls saw Chennai secure their first win of the season, sparking a little bit of hope among its fans. However, the win should not take away from the fact that CSK are still the 9th ranked team in the IPL table, just one ahead of KKR.

This is essentially a fancy bottom of the table derby between two sides who have 8 IPL titles between them.

KKR TEAM NEWS

Kolkata Knight Riders’ main problem has been their middle-overs batting. They start well in the powerplay and then fizzle out when spin comes to operate in the middle overs. For a tall batting order, they simply do not take enough risks to utilise their resources.

It is funny that KKR are the only team that has employed a specialist power coach (Andre Russell), who seems to have had no impact in the middle order batting at all.

KKR’s issue is highlighted by the fact that Sunil Narine, one of their most destructive batters from the title-winning season, has faced only 4 balls in the 4 matches that KKR have batted in.

Bowling has been an issue this season as well, but it is expected to continue as there is no word from the KKR camp if Varun Chakravarthy will play today.

“So, Varun’s been training. He’s had a bandage on his hand, but then he’s still training. He’s been training for all the days leading up to this match, so he’s good,” said a KKR spokesperson ahead of the game.

CSK TEAM NEWS

This is perhaps the first season in many years when the spotlight is not on MS Dhoni. The legendary leader continues to deal with an injury, and credit to CSK for ensuring that the narrative has not revolved around him yet again.

Dhoni is expected to miss this game as well due to a calf strain, which puts the onus on Ruturaj Gaikwad and Sanju Samson to drive the side out of the bottom half of the table.

Sanju’s hundred should give him and his opening partner a significant boost in confidence, something that could prove crucial in helping CSK assert themselves against KKR at home. At a venue like Chepauk, where momentum can quickly tilt the game, a confident start at the top can set the tone for the rest of the batting unit.

The aggressive intent shown in that innings will also reassure CSK fans that the team’s rebuild is moving in the right direction.

CSK vs KKR: TACTICAL BATTLE

Kolkata Knight Riders nearly choked Lucknow Super Giants with 8 overs of spin in the last game. Sunil Narine bowled exceptionally well at an economy of 3, while Anukul Roy held his own at the Eden Gardens.

CSK have Shivam Dube to counter the spin threat, and to some extent Dewald Brevis as well.

If Brevis plays, this will be his first game of the season, and a battle against Sunil Narine could be one of the most fascinating watches for the fans at the Chepauk.

CSK vs KKR: PITCH REPORT

The match will be played on a black soil surface. A lot of runs are expected from the surface, and hopefully this gives a chance to both batting units that have struggled so far this season.

The Chennai weather will hold with no rain expected in the evening. There is excessive heat warning in the Southern half of India, so players are expected to keep themselves well hydrated.
