Five constituencies in Guwahati

Guwahati’s constituency boundaries were slightly different in the past. However, the 2023 delimitations reshaped them and two new urban seats were introduced – New Guwahati and Guwahati Central.

NDA vs opposition in Assam

There is a direct contest in the Assam elections between the BJP-led NDA and the Congress-led opposition alliance. While exit polls are giving the BJP alliance the lead, the opposition has strongly contested these projections, with the BJP alliance claiming “silent votes” in its favour.

The election has turned into a generational clash between the “old guard” and Gen Z in Guwahati Central. Veteran BJP leader Vijay Kumar Gupta is defending his urban bastion against Kunki Chaudhary, a 27-year-old first-time candidate from Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP). Chaudhary is particularly focusing on youth issues and civic reforms to disrupt the established political system.

Meanwhile in Dispur BJP Congress has played a big bet by fielding former veteran leader Pradyut Bordoloi, who had joined the saffron party just before the elections. He is contesting from Congress’s Meera Borthakur Goswami.

Assam fully prepared for counting of votes

The electoral fate of 722 candidates from 126 assembly constituencies of the state will be decided in EVMs amid tight security arrangements at 40 counting centers in all 35 districts.

There are 59 women among the contestants. Counting of votes will take place at three different centers in Nagaon district, while counting will take place at two centers each in Kokrajhar, Tinsukia and Jorhat.

Twenty-five companies of the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) have been deployed to protect the counting centers and strong rooms housing electronic voting machines (EVMs).

Authorities will deploy 800 additional unarmed police personnel to transport EVMs from strongrooms to counting centres.

Chief Electoral Officer Anurag Goyal had said that two additional CAPF companies would be put on static duty. On the other hand, 93 companies of State Armed Police have already been deployed in the districts.
