Chennai Super Kings batter Dewald Brevis has heaped praise on young teammate Ayush Mhatre, calling him “special” amid his breakout performances in the ongoing IPL season. Brevis credited the spark in the dressing room as a key factor behind CSK’s recent turnaround after a sluggish start.
After losing their first three matches, CSK have bounced back with two consecutive wins, partly driven by Mhatre’s explosive run-scoring at a strike rate of 171. Mhatre’s emergence has injected fresh energy into the CSK batting, with the youngster already amassing 171 runs including two half-centuries, helping shift momentum in their campaign.
“He is just special. He is young, he plays the way he is,” Brevis said. “There is a lovely spark in the team and yeah, it’s definitely all of us — all the management and everyone.”
The South African batter believes that if Mhatre continues to back his abilities, he can mould his game however he wants. “That’s my advice for him: just continue to be true to himself. Have fun and play like that, no matter what. You do get ups and downs in your career and it’s brilliant to see how he plays. He basically takes it ball by ball and just reacts. He hits the ball where it needs to go,” he added.
BREVIS RETURNS TO BOOST CSK BATTING
Brevis himself has added depth to the CSK’s batting line-up following his return from injury. The South African youngster had been sidelined with a side strain before the tournament but is now regaining rhythm and confidence.
“I feel absolutely great to have a dive on the field, to have a good swing and have a feel for the game. I wanted some confidence because it wasn’t nice to be out with a side strain. Glad, I got some runs,” he said.
After missing an opportunity to bat against Delhi Capitals, Brevis made an impact with a brisk 41 off 29 balls against Kolkata Knight Riders, contributing to a 32-run win. His return, combined with Mhatre’s form, has strengthened CSK’s batting unit as they look to build momentum in the tournament.
CSK next face another resurgent team, Sunrisers Hyderabad on April 18 at the Rajiv Gandhi Stadium.
