US sanctions China-based oil refinery and 40 shippers over Iranian oil
The Trump administration has imposed economic sanctions on a major Chinese oil refinery and about 40 shipping firms and tankers involved in the transportation of Iranian oil.
The decision, announced Friday and first reported by The Associated Press, follows the administration’s warning to impose secondary sanctions on companies and countries doing business with Iran. Iran news live updates: US legal adviser says Tehran’s ‘aggression’ justifies Iran war
Iran News Live Updates: The US State Department’s top lawyer has argued that President Donald Trump’s war with Iran was launched in self-defense and to protect US ally Israel, arguing that the bombing campaign was not the start of a new war but a continuation of the ongoing conflict.
State Department legal adviser Reed Rubinstein made these arguments in a statement issued days before a May 1 deadline for the Trump administration to seek approval from Congress for the war under the 1973 War Powers Act or take steps to end it.
“The United States engaged in this conflict at the request of its Israeli ally and in collective self-defense, as well as in exercise of the United States’ inherent right of self-defense, including attacks on U.S. forces and Iranian proxies on Israel, Iranian missile attacks against Israel in 2024, and Tehran’s pursuit of nuclear weapons,” Rubinstein said, citing “Decades of Iran’s malignant aggression” since the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

Iran news live updates: Besant says US will not renew Iranian and Russian oil waivers
Iran News Live Updates: Treasury Secretary Scott Besant said on Friday that the US does not plan to renew a waiver allowing the purchase of Russian oil and petroleum products that are currently at sea. And, he said, renewal of the one-time exemption for Iranian oil at sea is completely off the table.
“Not Iranian,” Besant told the Associated Press. “We have a blockade, and no oil is coming out.”
“And we think that in the next two, three days, they’re going to have to start shutting down production, which would be very bad for their wells.”
Besant’s statement comes as the world is angry over the US-Israel war in Iran and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz that has left global energy markets stuck.
