Norris takes pole to break Red Bull’s home dominance

McLaren’s Lando Norris clinched pole position for Sunday’s Austrian Grand Prix, bringing an end to Red Bull’s dominance at their home circuit.

Norris’s 1.03:971-second lap  on Saturday was the first time since 2020 when Red Bull, or rather, Max Verstappen has not bagged pole position at this venue.

“I did what I planned to do and when I plan to do something and it goes right, it normally goes very, very well. Hopefully we can keep it up,” said an ecstatic Norris.

Meanwhile, it was a thoroughly chastening qualifying for Red Bull as Verstappen, could only muster a seventh-place grid start. His teammate Yuki Tsunoda suffered the ignominy of being knocked out in the first qualifying session. Meanwhile, Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc put in the second-quickest lap ahead of McLaren’s Oscar Piastri — the championship leader.
