'Make your own film': Ram Gopal Varma has a stern rebuke for those calling Aditya Dhar's Dhurandhar 2 'propaganda'

Aditya Dhar has found himself a steady cheerleader in veteran filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma. The Satya director has praised the Dhurandhar films profusely over the last three months, saying Aditya has ‘showed a new way of Indian cinema’. Now, he has targeted the film’s critics, particularly those who call Dhurandhar The Revenge propaganda.

Ram Gopal Varma has defended Ranveer Singh-starrer Dhurandhar 2.
Ram Gopal Varma has defended Ranveer Singh-starrer Dhurandhar 2.

In a recent interview with news agency ANI, RGV again praised Ranveer Singh-starrer Dhurandhar 2, which released in theatres on March 19 and has been a massive commercial success.

“Calling Dhurandhar just a ‘film’ doesn’t feel right, because maybe in the last 20-30 years, no film has come like this, its scale, its twists, and even without relying heavily on story twists, its structure itself. Aditya has transformed that structure, especially the climax, what do you call it? Even the item songs, though unrealistic, gravity-defying fight scenes, he has packaged everything together in a complete, massive way,” RGV said.

Dhurandhar released in December 2025 and became the second-highest-grossing Hindi film ever, grossing ₹1300 crore worldwide and setting a new Bollywood box-office record domestically. The sequel has already amassed ₹850 crore in five days and looks set to surpass part 1.

Ram Gopal Varma addresses Dhurandhar’s propaganda charges

Elaborating on what sets Dhurandhar 2 apart, Ram Gopal Varma suggested that the film goes beyond conventional definitions of cinema. But the film has seen its fair share of criticism as well, with many calling it propaganda for the ruling party, and in particular, Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

But RGV defended the film against that line of critique. “As for propaganda, I don’t really understand that term in this context. Everyone has their own viewpoint. If one person is accused, the defence will present their side too. People will share their perspectives. Aditya has shared his point of view through the film. If you don’t agree with it, you may call it propaganda or false, but then you can make your own film in response,” Ram Gopal Varma said.

All about Dhurandhar 2

Produced by Jio Studios and B62 Studios, Dhurandhar 2 features a multi-starrer cast including Sanjay Dutt, R. Madhavan, Rakesh Bedi and Arjun Rampal. Set in Pakistan’s Lyari, it focuses on an Indian spy infiltrating the gangs of Karachi while dismantling their aid to the local terror network. The film has received widespread praise from across the industry as well. Actors and filmmakers, including Alia Bhatt, SS Rajamouli, and Kangana, have lauded the project.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum praises services from Cuban doctors, who often work in underserved rural areas.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has confirmed that her country will continue receiving Cuban medical workers, as part of a longstanding programme meant to build goodwill between the island and other Latin American countries.

Her remarks on Wednesday come as the United States pressures Latin American countries to sever their ties to Cuba’s medical programme.

Sheinbaum, however, told reporters during a news conference that the agreement was a benefit to Mexico. Thousands of Cuban medical workers have deployed there since 2022 to work largely in poor, rural areas.

“We have a very good agreement that’s also been a great help to us. It’s a bilateral agreement that’s been very beneficial for Mexico,” said Sheinbaum.

“It’s hard to get Mexican doctors and specialists to go out to many rural areas where we need medical specialists, and the Cubans are willing to work there.”

In February, the US passed a law that opens the door to sanctions on countries that continue to participate in the programme.

It called for the US secretary of state to issue a report within 90 days about which countries continue to pay the government of Cuba for the “coerced and trafficked labour of Cuban medical professionals”.

The move comes amid a wider push to further isolate Cuba and topple the government in Havana, a longtime target of US ire. So far, countries including the Bahamas, Honduras, Guatemala, Jamaica and Guyana have ended their participation in the Cuban medical exchange programme.

Cuba has long depicted the decades-old programme as a means of signalling solidarity with other countries. It has also become an important source of foreign revenue for the island nation, which has been under a restrictive US economic embargo since 1960.

The administration of US President Donald Trump, however, has depicted the programme as akin to forced labour.

“Basically, it’s human trafficking,” Secretary of State Marco Rubio told reporters in February.

“I mean, they’re barely even being paid. Their freedom of movement is tightly restricted. And we want these countries to understand that’s what they’re participating in.”

Experts at the United Nations have also raised similar concerns, including about the confiscation of passports, which the Cuban government justifies as a means of preventing trained doctors from fleeing the country after their state-sponsored studies.

The pressure on the Cuban medical missions is part of a broader push under Trump’s second term to seek regime change on the island.

By threatening tariffs on Cuba’s trading partners, Trump has largely cut the island off from accessing the foreign oil necessary to power its electrical grid.

Trump has also said that he hopes to “take” Cuba and install a new government that will be more pliant to US demands.

The Mexican government has tried to balance its friendly relations with Cuba with the US’s demands.

In the absence of energy shipments, Sheinbaum’s government has sent vessels with humanitarian aid to the island.

Rajinikanth praises Dhurandhar 2: When he spoke of army brother who died in 1965 India-Pakistan war

Tamil star Rajinikanth was recently all praise for Aditya Dhar’s Ranveer Singh-starrer Dhurandhar: The Revenge, which details a fictional undercover operation by India to bring down a terror outfit in Pakistan. After his post went viral, fans dug out an old video of the star talking about his brother, an army soldier who died in the 1965 India-Pakistan war.

Rajinikanth was one of the many who had contributed to the Kargil relief fund.
Rajinikanth was one of the many who had contributed to the Kargil relief fund.

When Rajinikanth spoke about his brother

During the 1999 Kargil War, former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi supported the armed forces by mobilising the Kargil Relief Fund. Tamil Nadu had contributed ₹30 crore to the cause, and Rajinikanth was one among the many celebrities who made donations. Talking at a fundraising event, the star revealed the cause was close to his heart as his brother had died during the 1965 India-Pakistan war.

He said, “Personally, I know what war is like. My elder brother, Nageshwara Rao, was an army man. He was in the 1965 India-Pakistan war. He was injured and died during his treatment. More than the soldiers, it’s the family members who suffer the most. I know that from personal experience. We can never compensate them for their services and pain.”

He added that Pakistan must stop the Kargil war before things worsen. “They have agreed to stop, but there’s no guarantee. If they wage a war again, I hope we attack them and finish them in one day. But more than that, they must fear to even attack us. India must become a superpower like Russia, Japan, or America. As Indians, we must contribute to that too,” he added.

Rajinikanth’s praise for Dhurandhar 2

Recently, Rajinikanth was all praise for Dhurandhar 2, calling it ‘box office ka baap’. He wrote on X (formerly Twitter), “What a film … #Dhurandhar2‌ !!! Aditya Dhar (salute emoji) box office -ka baap !!! Many congratulations to Ranveer and the entire cast and crew. A must watch film for every indian. Jai hind @AdityaDharFilms @RanveerOfficial.”

Aditya responded to him, writing, “Sir, we’ve all grown up measuring “entertainment” with just one benchmark, YOU. Making us whistle, laugh, cry and feel larger than life for decades and still doing it with the same swag and grace, that’s pure magic. So for you to call Dhurandhar 2 a “must watch” feels like the biggest ‘superstar’ moment of my life. It feels like a blessing from the very person who taught us all to dream bigger. Grateful beyond words, Sir. This one is going straight to the heart. Jai Hind.”

Dhurandhar 2 was released in theatres on March 19 with paid premieres on March 18. It has collected over ₹580 crore net in India so far. The spy film also stars Sara Arjun, Arjun Rampal, R Madhavan, Rakesh Bedi, Gaurav Gera and others.

A legendary run in numbers

Salah’s impact can best be understood through his staggering numbers. Since joining from Roma in 2017 for around USD 50 million, he has scored 255 goals in 435 appearances, making him Liverpool’s third-highest goalscorer ever, behind only Ian Rush (346) and Roger Hunt (285).In the Premier League alone, Salah has been directly involved in 281 goals (189 goals and 92 assists), the most by any player for a single club in the competition’s history.

He also created 534 chances from open play, highlighting his all-around attacking ability. His consistency is further reflected in his scoring rate, averaging a goal every 138 minutes, and reaching 100 Premier League goals in just 151 games, a club record.

Individually, he claimed the Premier League Golden Boot 4 times, equalling Thierry Henry’s record.

A complicated end and what lies ahead

Despite his legendary status, Salah’s final season has been turbulent. After a dip in form, he admitted feeling “thrown under the bus”, with reports of tension between him and manager Arne Slot. His output also dropped by his standards, with just a handful of league goals this season.Liverpool, meanwhile, are struggling with injuries, lack of squad depth, and inconsistency, leaving them facing a major rebuild.

For now, attention turns to giving him a fitting farewell.Whatever comes next, Salah leaves behind a legacy defined by numbers, trophies, and unforgettable moments, cementing his place as one of Liverpool’s greatest-ever players.

Rihanna's house shooter pleads 'NOT GUILTY' to attempted murder charge; asks for bail to be reduced

A woman from Florida pleaded ‘not guilty’ to the attempted murder of Rihanna. Ivanna Lisette Ortiz, of Orlando, also pleaded not guilty through her attorney to more than a dozen other felony counts in Los Angeles Superior Court.

Rihanna’s house shooter could get life in prison

Ortiz is charged with 10 counts of assault with a semiautomatic firearm and three counts of shooting at an occupied vehicle or dwelling. She could get life in prison if convicted on all charges. Her lawyer, Deputy Public Defender Derek Ray Dillman, entered the plea on her behalf as Ortiz appeared behind glass in a custody area, wearing yellow jail clothes with her blond hair in braids. She spoke only to agree to waive her right to a speedy preliminary hearing, the next phase of the case where evidence is presented to determine whether a trial is warranted.

Rihanna’s house shooter asks to reduce bail

Her lawyer asked that her bail be reduced from $1.9 million to $70,000 based on her ability to pay. Judge Theresa McGonigle declined the request and kept the bail the same. The prosecutor, arguing against the reduction, said she’s a major risk to the community and would likely flee. “This case involves a dangerous, deliberate shooting into occupied homes,” Deputy District Attorney Alexander Bott said. “This is the kind of conduct that could easily have resulted in multiple homicides.”When Ortiz was arrested hours after the shooting, she was alone in her car with the rifle, more rounds and a wig she intended to use as a disguise, Bott said. Public records show Ortiz has been a licensed speech pathologist for more than a decade. McGonigle ruled at the state attorney general’s request that she should be prevented from practicing in California.

Shooter fired 20 bullets at singer’s home

Prosecutors allege Rihanna, her partner A$AP Rocky and their three young children were among the people assaulted at their home in the Beverly Hills area on March 8 when Ortiz, 35, pulled up to the property and sprayed about 20 bullets from an AR-15 style rifle into the tall exterior wall.Hochman would not say where any of the bullets landed, discuss a motive or describe any connection between Ortiz and Rihanna, saying all were under investigation. He also said his office was investigating social media posts from Ortiz from the days leading up to the gunfire.

Shooter charged on multiple counts of assault

District Attorney Nathan Hochman said when Ortiz was charged that Rihanna and Rocky were together in an Airstream trailer at the time of the shooting, while her mother, their children and staffers were in the main house. The three counts of firing at a dwelling were for Rihanna’s house, her trailer, and a neighbor’s house, prosecutors said. The 10 assault counts were for Rihanna and family, two staffers and two people in the neighboring house.

Several memorials to the 11 “language martyrs” commemorate Silchar, the center of the Bengali-dominated Barak Valley in southern Assam. Massacre on May 19, 1961. There is much more beyond the valley. The primary monument, the Shaheed Minar or Martyrs’ Tomb, is in Gandhibagh, a popular park in the center of Silchar. Eleven pillars stand in memory of the martyrs at the cremation ground in the city, where they were cremated.

But the memorial that most affects the city dwellers is the brown statue at the Silchar railway station, where state police personnel shot dead 11 people, including 16-year-old Kamala Bhattacharya, who had gathered to protest the Assam government’s decision to implement Assamese as the sole official language.

Explained. What is the new delimitation process by Assam?

On Kalimohan Road, about 200 meters from the railway station memorial, is the spacious house of former Union minister Santosh Mohan Dev, one of the most influential politicians to emerge from India’s eight-state northeast. The Congress leader’s house was the power center of the valley – bordering Tripura – for three decades before it was shifted to Kabindra Purkayastha’s house in Nutanapatti, about 1.5 km from the memorial.

Purkayastha, one of the founding members of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the northeast in the 1980s, did not become as influential as Deo, but heralded the saffron wave in Assam by wresting the Silchar Lok Sabha seat from Deo in 1991 and ensuring 10 assembly seats, including nine from the Barak Valley, that year.

united by a language

Divided by ideology, both the Houses have come together to demand renaming of Silchar Railway Station as Bhasha Shaheed (Language Martyr) Railway Station. Dev and Purkayastha also supported this demand in the Parliament. His son, Rajya Sabha member Kanad Purkayastha, refreshed the demand in Delhi in December 2025. Leaders of the Left Front, who had briefly fired in the Barak Valley in the 1970s, were also on the same side.

“The Barak Valley was untouched by the violence that broke out in other parts of Assam after the Babri Masjid demolition in December 1992. This was because Hindus and Muslims first identified themselves as Bengalis. Unfortunately, the polarization of the BJP brand is weakening the ties over language,” says Pradip Dutta Roy, lawyer and chief convenor of the regional Barak Democratic Front party. He says the BJP can no longer produce strong leaders in the Barak Valley who can withstand the “bulldozer decisions” from Dispur (Assam’s seat of power in the Assamese-dominated Brahmaputra Valley).

“After the 1961 incident, the Assam government withdrew its controversial circular to make Bengali the official language in the Barak Valley, which now includes Cachar, Hailakandi and Sribhoomi districts. But it tried to push through similar circulars in 1972, 1986 and 2013. In 1986, a year after the Assam agitation, which mainly targeted Bengalis, ended, two more were killed in police firing. Protesters were killed,” he says. Be it Congress (1961, 1972, and 2013), Assam Gana Parishad (AGP, 1986) or now BJP, they feel that the attitude of the Assam government towards Barak Valley and its people has not changed. He points to the “reluctance” of the BJP-led state government to give shape to the ₹8 crore Bhasha Shaheed Memorial Museum announced in 2017.

trust in words

The sentiments associated with the 1961 murder are evident in a flex signboard put up by locals at Silchar railway station. The signboard reads “Bhasha Shaheed Railway Station Silchar” in Bengali, Hindi and English. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had sparked a debate in 2025 by saying that the No Objection Certificate (NOC) sent to the Center regarding changing the name of the railway station was pending due to alternative proposals and response from other groups.

Bhasha Shaheed Station Shaheed Smaran Samiti, an organization seeking justice for language martyrs, accused him of speaking “half truth” and condemned his attempt to rename the railway station after the Dimasa tribal freedom fighter, which “had no direct connection with the station”. The organization’s general secretary Rajib Kar said the Home Ministry acted on a proposal by the Tarun Gogoi-led Congress government in 2016 and issued an NOC in November 2017 directing the Assam government to process the name change through a gazette notification. The organization fails to understand why the BJP-led government, which claims to have the support of Bengali Hindu voters in Assam, is delaying the notification for nine years.

Atanu Bhattacharjee, president of Silchar Town Congress Committee, says the neglect of Barak Valley is not just about a railway station or the Bengali language. “Despite constituting more than 40% of Assam’s population, Bengali Hindus and Muslims remain second-class citizens. At least in Barak Valley, both communities enjoyed harmony until the BJP sowed the seeds of division on religious lines. Still, we hope things will improve when the regime changes.” Elections are to be held in Assam in April.

He says, “Our region gets step-motherly treatment from the mainstream Assam leadership. We have had to struggle for higher education and health care institutions, various developmental projects and even the East-West Corridor project connecting Saurashtra to Silchar is getting delayed.” He says syndicates that control businesses and natural resources are being encouraged. “All this is being done behind the Hindu-Muslim narrative to keep people divided.”

Citing his case as an example, he accused the BJP of resorting to “gutter-level” politics. “I was suspended from the post of general secretary of Cachar District Sports Association and locked out of my office because I had appreciated the elevation of Gaurav Gogoi as Assam Congress president and had expected him to become the chief minister,” he says.

Former MLA Ataur Rahman Mazrabhuiya, representing the All India United Democratic Front led by Badruddin Ajmal, agrees with Bhattacharjee. He says, “There was a time when language, not faith, mattered more in Barak Valley. Under the current regime, the attempt to keep Muslims under control has been a factor behind the delimitation process, which has reduced the number of assembly seats in Barak Valley from 15 to 13.” “Given the population, there should have been three more assembly seats in Barak Valley,” he says. According to the 2011 census, Muslims constitute about 51% of the population of Barak Valley. Hindu numbers are around 47%.

erosion of representation

Barak Valley was forced to lose two assembly seats in the 2023 delimitation exercise, reportedly designed by Chief Minister Sarma. Critics said it was designed to weaken the political influence of Muslims and consolidate Hindu votes. Hailakandi and Sribhoomi (formerly Karimganj) districts, where Muslims constituted 60.31% and 56.36% of the population in 2011, lost one seat each. For example, the Muslim-dominated Algapur and Katlichera seats were merged into one unit, changing the electoral dynamics for minorities in the region.

BJP’s Cachar district president Rupam Saha defends the move. He says, “We believe in the quality of candidates, not numbers. We are confident of winning at least 10 seats in Barak Valley, and the right representatives will have a stronger voice in Dispur than numerically strong MLAs who may not make much difference.” This belief stems from the common belief that a large section of Muslims in the valley is packed into three constituencies: Algapur-Katlicherra, Karimganj South and Sonai.

Bhattacharya says, delimitation did not affect only Muslim dominated areas. He says, “Predominantly Hindu areas have also been randomly transferred from one constituency to another. Take the case of Malogram, one of the oldest four municipal wards of Silchar. The entire ward of about 30,000 people was annexed to the rural Udharbond constituency. This was nothing but an insult to the people of Silchar and Bengalis in general.”

Some in the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), whose groundwork in the 1950s helped turn Barak Valley into a saffron stronghold, do not agree with the idea of electing fewer Muslims to the 126-member Assam Assembly. “Our fight is not against Muslims, but against Islamic fundamentalism and everything associated with it. At the end of the day, the region needs more voices to fight for its needs. And when the number of seats goes down, the region is deprived of constituency-based development funds,” says a Maharashtra-based RSS pracharak associated with a top BJP leader.

Datta Roy sees the assembly seat reduction as a long-term plan by the people of the Brahmaputra Valley to take over the Barak Valley linguistically. “The BJP has openly acknowledged the Barak Valley and Bengalis that they gave it room to grow in Assam and the rest of the Northeast, but this is far from Bengali-friendly,” he says. Many Bengalis from our valley got jobs during the Congress rule. They constitute only 8% of government employees, down from 60% during the Hiteshwar Saikia-led Congress government.” He further said that if Bengalis constitute 30% of Assam’s population, 30,000 of them should have got jobs. Out of the 1,00,000 provided by successive BJP governments. He says, “Only 2,100 people from Barak Valley got jobs and most of the posts in our region are being filled by people from Brahmaputra Valley, who do not give the Bengali language the respect it deserves.”

Saha says the BJP-led NDA is on a mission to address regional imbalances, as evidenced by several projects in various stages of implementation, including a flyover to ease traffic congestion in Silchar and an agricultural institute in Sribhoomi. Saha says, “By giving the Padma Shri to Kavindra Purkayastha, the first local from Barak Valley to receive the award posthumously, the BJP has shown that it respects Bengalis. As far as Silchar railway station is concerned, we want it to be renamed too, but some things take time.”

While the BJP wants five more years to fulfill its promises, the opposition – scattered on the surface – believes the time has come for others to do what the saffron brigade could not. “People are revolting in the valley, but quietly. We hope this will be reflected in the results on April 9,” says Majarbhuiya.

IPL 2026: Marcus Stoinis, Cooper Connolly join Punjab Kings` squad in Mohali

The IPL 2026 is all set to kick off from March 28. So far, the schedule of only first 20 matches has been released due to state elections.

Ahead of the league, Australian star players Marcus Stoinis and Cooper Connolly have officially joined the Punjab Kings` (PBKS) squad in Mohali.

The duo arrived on Wednesday to link up with the squad as the tournament is just a few days shy from its commencement.

According to the release, the players were seen in high spirits when they were welcomed at the New International Cricket Stadium in New Chandigarh. Their arrival has added a massive boost to the Punjab Kings` lineup.

In the previous edition of the cash-rich league, PBKS ended up as the runners-up. They will now gear up to clash against Gujarat Titans (GT) on March 31.

Additionally, former Team India cricketer Irfan Pathan has urged star pacer Arshdeep Singh to focus on his statistics with the new ball for the upcoming season.

“Arshdeep, who was your highest wicket-taker, has been consistently taking wickets. One thing he will definitely need to focus on is how he bowls with the new ball. Because over the past year, or slightly less than a year, from what I have observed, he hasn`t been bowling much inswing with the new ball. His statistics, compared to before and after the Asia Cup, have slightly declined in terms of new-ball bowling. He will need to pay attention to that, and also keep an eye on his economy rate,” he said.

NEW DELHI: A debate has broken out over Arjun Tendulkar’s chances in IPL 2026 after Ravichandran Ashwin said the youngster is unlikely to feature for Lucknow Super Giants (LSG). With a strong pace attack already in place, Ashwin felt Arjun would struggle to break into the playing XI.Speaking about the team combination, Ashwin said, “Arjun Tendulkar khelega hi nahi (Arjun Tendulkar won’t play at all), and let’s not even go there. I think it is very difficult because there are Mayank Yadav, Mohsin Khan, Avesh Khan, and Mohammad Shami in this lineup. There are so many fast bowlers. How will he play? I don’t think he makes any case unless and until there are a lot of injuries.”
