New rules in IPL 2026? Here’s what was discussed in captains’ meet in Mumbai
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Wednesday conducted its official pre-season briefing for the captains of all 10 Indian Premier League (IPL) franchises. The meeting, a customary curtain-raiser held at the BCCI headquarters, focused on the clarification of playing conditions, new training protocols, and specific match-day regulations ahead of the tournament’s 19th edition.
The session was led by Javagal Srinath, head of the BCCI match referees’ panel, and Nitin Menon, the Indian representative on the ICC Elite Panel of Umpires. In a historic first for the league, the assembly featured an entirely Indian captaincy contingent. This included Ishan Kishan, who represented Sunrisers Hyderabad as interim captain in the absence of Pat Cummins, alongside other captains such as Hardik Pandya (Mumbai Indians), Shubman Gill (Gujarat Titans), and Ruturaj Gaikwad (Chennai Super Kings).
During the meeting, the BCCI confirmed that the much-debated Impact Player rule will remain in place until at least 2027, despite a majority of franchise captains expressing reservations during a pre-season briefing on Wednesday.
WHAT IS THE IMPACT PLAYER RULE
Introduced in 2023, the Impact Player rule allows teams to substitute a member of the starting XI at any point in the match. While the BCCI had previously extended the rule’s tenure to 2024, it remains a point of contention among players and coaching staff who argue it affects the balance between bat and ball.
According to league sources, a majority of the captains raised concerns regarding the tactical implications of the rule during the session. However, officials clarified that no further review of the regulation will take place before the conclusion of the 2027 season.
BALL CHANGE PROPOSAL
The briefing also addressed playing conditions concerning the dew factor. Currently, playing conditions allow for a ball change after the 10th over of the second innings if the ball becomes difficult to grip due to moisture.
One captain proposed that a similar ball change be permitted after the 10th over of the first innings to ensure parity. The proposal did not receive significant support from the match officials or the broader group. The BCCI maintained that the current rule is specifically designed to counter heavy dew, which is statistically more prevalent during the second innings of night matches. Consequently, the existing protocol stands.
NEW TRAINING PROTOCOLS
The BCCI provided further clarity on the revised training guidelines for the 2026 edition. Under the new directives:
Match Day Restrictions: No formal practice sessions are permitted on the day of a match.
Pitch Usage: If a team concludes its scheduled practice session earlier than the allotted time, the opposing team is prohibited from utilizing the remaining time on those specific wickets.
Captains sought clarification on the logistical impact of these rules. Officials stated the measures are intended to manage pitch wear and ensure uniform conditions across the tournament’s various venues.
The session concluded with a briefing on player conduct and over-rate penalties. The organisers emphasised that captains will be held strictly accountable for maintaining the pace of play.
IPL 2026 will get underway with defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru hosting SunRisers Hyderabad at M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Saturday, March 28.

Abhishek Bachchan: ‘I felt critics didn’t understand my work'
At a time when the lines between creators, critics and audiences are increasingly blurring, Abhishek Bachchan, son of megastar Amitabh Bachchan, shared a candid and introspective take on the evolving ecosystem of content and criticism.
Questions relevance of traditional critics
Speaking at the Critics’ Choice Awards 2026, Abhishek pointed to the explosion of digital content and how it has reshaped performance and opinion.“We see millions of reels every day where creators perform. They perform our dialogues, our dances, our action, our comedy. Many a time, as good, if not better than the original. They are empowered enough today to think they are as good as their heroes, their idols,” he said.Raising a pointed question about the space critics occupy today, he added, “Why should a newspaper editor or a channel executive employ you as their in-house critic, as opposed to who? What do we need to do, or be, in order to stand out from the crowd? How to ensure that we are the most deserving candidate to be chosen to act in a film, or to be an in-house film critic? Let’s see. Be original. Be unique. Offer a perspective or performance that nobody else is able to do. Please pardon my cynical and slightly disgruntled side. Humour me. Be original.”
‘I am answerable to the audience’
At the same time, the actor underlined the importance of criticism in his own journey, admitting that his understanding of it has evolved over time.“I think we often misunderstand criticism. We tend to see it as something negative, but it shouldn’t be. I work in a commercial art form, and if I expect people to spend their time and money on my films, then I am answerable to them. I am open to scrutiny, to judgement, and to criticism,” he said.
From denial to learning
Reflecting on his early years in the industry, Abhishek acknowledged that accepting criticism wasn’t always easy.“Early in my career, I didn’t always feel this way. Like most actors, I believed everything would work out perfectly. But when reality hits, it hits hard. I went through phases of denial, where I felt critics didn’t understand my work or weren’t qualified to judge it,” he shared. However, over time, his perspective shifted. “I realised I was looking at it the wrong way. I began to see that critics are not my opponents. They know the way. If I believe I know how to drive, then why not listen, learn, and improve? Their feedback helped me build my journey as an actor. Only a fool would ignore that.”
Ex-South Africa captain ‘respects’ Gautam Gambhir, reveals his X-factor: ‘Always villain in the story’
Former South African skipper Faf du Plessis was full of praise for Indian coach Gautam Gambhir, crediting him for the unique role he fulfills in a very special way at the helm of Indian cricket.

Speaking on JioStar, du Plessis reflected on what it was like to play against Gambhir – while the pair never shared a dressing room in the IPL, they were consistent opponents on the international level and particularly in the franchise league, as Gambhir’s KKR teams fronted up against Chennai Super Kings in some iconic battles through the 2010s.
“My perspective of Gambhir is obviously very different from the guys that have played with him,” explained du Plessis. “He is always the villain in the story when it comes to playing against him. But, you respect that. He is so competitive. He doesn’t worry for one second to be liked by anyone,” he explained.
Du Plessis is one of the top captains of the IPL – while he never got his hands on a trophy, the foundation he laid at RCB before his departure in 2024 ensured that the team would find their maiden success in 2025. Now working as an analyst for JioStar and ESPN amongst others, du Plessis provided a unique look at IPL cricket, and explained how Gambhir’s unique us against the world mentality served to motivate his teams.
“His job as a leader is to set high standards and have accountability within the dressing room. And that is what good leaders do,” said the Proteas batter. “You look from the outside, if you are a leader or a guy that plays against him, you want to beat him, because of the way he carries on as the opposition. But, you respect the fact he has set such high standards.”
Gambhir’s ‘standards’ ensure success
“You can see it in the way he talks to the team, he sets a standard and believes if you drop in your stand, I will be on your case. That’s what good leaders do,” said du Plessis. “They don’t slip in those standards. He has created that since his playing days.”
After being the key contributor in the 2007 and 2011 World Cup finals for India, Gambhir captained and led KKR to dual IPL successes in 2012 and 2014. Following his retirement, he would return in a mentorship capacity to the Eden Gardens, where in tandem with Shreyas Iyer he helped KKR to a third title in 2024.
“If you look at his record, you have to take your hat off and say, from a leadership perspective, KKR with him, was a stronger side,” said du Plessis – something that certainly proved to be the case on the cricket field.
Although Gambhir is still finding his feet as Indian captain, the T20 World Cup victory provides him a big boost, and words such as these from his contemporaries indicate why he is so highly rated amongst those in the know in the cricketing world.
Dacoit: Pawan Singh to join Adivi Sesh for song launch of Touchbuddy

With the upcoming bilingual film Dacoit already riding a strong wave of buzz and anticipation building by the day, the makers are all set to dial up the excitement with a grand on-ground spectacle. Pawan Singh, Adivi Sesh, and Jonita Gandhi will come together for the electrifying launch of their much-anticipated track Touchbuddy.
Touchbuddy song to be launched in Gorakhpur
Blending the high-octane energy of Bhojpuri beats with an unmistakable dose of South swag, Touchbuddy promises to be a fun, peppy, cross-cultural musical extravaganza. Positioned as a potential chart-topper of the summer, the track is expected to resonate with audiences far and wide.
The song will be unveiled at a grand launch event on March 28 at Mahant Digvijaynath Park in Gorakhpur from 6 PM onwards, setting the stage for a power-packed evening brimming with music, star presence, and palpable fan frenzy.
Adivi Sesh about Dacoit
Actor-writer-director Adivi Sesh has said that his character in the film is the most vivid he has played so far on screen. Talking to IANS, he said that Dacoit is the most character-driven film in his filmography. “It`s definitely my most vivid character. I wouldn`t say it`s completely character-driven, like say an Arjun Reddy. But it`s a lot more character-driven than my previous films. I`ve always come off a filmography where I loved my twists. And there`s always this first time I`m in love with the emotions of the film”.
He further mentioned, “So, who murdered whom is not a big question of this film. It`s not who has done it. It`s about emotions and the journey between two ex-lovers after 13 years. And we, for us, it was very exciting to set it in a violent time in the sense that that journey for them together is not just two people getting to know each other again. It`s two people in the middle of a robbery setup, in the middle of guns, bullets, fire, rain, heat and desert.”
The story combines elements of crime, action, and romance. Production is backed by Supriya Yarlagadda. The film marks a shift for Sesh toward a more commercial format compared to his earlier investigative thrillers. The film is set to arrive in cinemas on April 10, 2026.
Marking Shaneil Deo’s directorial debut, this ambitious venture is produced by Supriya Yarlagadda, co-produced by Suniel Narang, and presented by Annapurna Studios. Shot simultaneously in Hindi and Telugu, the film’s story and screenplay have been jointly crafted by Adivi Sesh and Shaneil Deo. Dacoit is gearing up for a grand pan-India theatrical release on April 10, 2026.
Jannik Sinner scripts history, breaks Novak Djokovic’s 10-year-old record | Tennis News
Jannik Sinner continued his impressive run at the Miami Open, defeating American Alex Michelsen in straight sets to reach the quarter-finals. The Italian star also created history during the match, extending his streak to 28 consecutive sets won at ATP Masters 1000 events, breaking Novak Djokovic’s 10-year-old record of 24.
Despite the straight-set scoreline of 7-5, 7-6, the match was far from easy for Sinner. Michelsen pushed him hard, especially in the second set, where the American raced to a 5-2 lead. However, Sinner showed his class and composure, fighting back to force a tiebreak and eventually sealing the win with a powerful serve.“I feel like I served very well in important moments and that helped me out, especially in the tough moments,” Sinner said. “But today was not easy — I played a night match yesterday and today in the daytime, so the conditions were very different.”With this victory, Sinner remains on course for the “Sunshine Double,” having already won the Indian Wells title earlier.
Upsets and key results in Miami
In other matches, Frances Tiafoe advanced to the quarter-finals and will now face Sinner. One of the biggest surprises came from Spain’s young qualifier Martin Landaluce, who defeated Sebastian Korda in a thrilling three-set match.Landaluce, who had struggled for wins earlier this season, dedicated his victory to his late grandmother, saying, “She would have been 101 last week, and she passed away a few months ago. I wanted to give her the victory.”Elsewhere, Jiri Lehecka knocked out Taylor Fritz, while Tommy Paul, Arthur Fils, Francisco Cerundolo, and Alexander Zverev also progressed, setting up an exciting quarter-final lineup in Miami.

Short Stream | ‘The Stubble’ by Shaz Syed
Amarjit Sharma, a farmer from Faridkot, Punjab, is an outlier among farmers of Punjab. A character in Shah Syed’s journalistic documentary Stubble: The Farmer’s Bane, Sharma is among a minority of organic farmers in Punjab who don’t grow paddy on his farm. He has diverse crops, and he doesn’t burn the stubble of his crops after harvest as the majority of farmers in North Indian states do. In other words, he doesn’t have “yield syndrome”, a term that comes up in the film.

Large scale open burning of crop residue, also known as stubble, left after the rice harvest in North Indian states of Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, takes place during the onset of winter — from October to November. The end of October witnesses peak burning on fields, which is a definitive propeller of the toxic air pollution levels that have worsened over the years in Delhi and its peripheries.
