India set to host World Indoor Athletics Championships in ’28

India will host the World Indoor Athletics Championships for the first time in 2028 in Bhubaneswar as the international body on Thursday awarded the hosting rights of the prestigious event to the country at its council meeting in Torun, Poland. The decision was taken at the World Athletics Council meeting a day before the start of World Indoor Athletics Championships (March 20-22) in the Polish city.

“India has been awarded the World Indoor Athletics Championships for the year 2028,” World Athletics vice president Adille Sumariwalla told PTI from Poland. AFI had revealed its bid for the 2028 World Indoor Championships earlier this year. A two-member team from World Athletics had visited the state-of-the-art indoor facility at the Kalinga Stadium Complex in Bhubaneswar in January. Along with Sumariwalla, also a World Athletics Council member and a former Athletics Federation of India (AFI) president, officials of the Odisha government had travelled to the Polish city. AFI president Bahadur Singh Sagoo said the development was an indication of the growing stature of Indian athletics in the international stage.

“The World Athletics 2028 Indoor Athletics Championships allotted to India mark the growing stature of Indian athletics. Indian track and field has been in sharp focus since ace javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra won back-to-back Olympic and World medals,” he said. New Zealand had also earlier expressed interest to host the 2028 World Indoor Championships, a biennial showpiece for indoor events. “Since India was in the fray, we were not allowed inside when the decision to choose the host city was taken. Later World Athletics announced that India has been awarded the Championships,” technical committee chairman and former AFI secretary Ravinder Chaudhry said from Poland. World Indoor Championships typically has 26 events — 13 each for men and women — to be competed across three days. The 4x400m mixed relay will be held for the first time in this edition in Poland.

The 13 events are 60m, 400m, 800m, 1500m, 3000m, 60m hurdles, 4x400m relay, high jump, pole vault, long jump, triple jump, shot put, heptathlon (pentathlon for women). India has also made a bid to host the 2028 Asian Indoor Athletics Championships at the state-of-the-art indoor facility at the Kalinga Stadium complex in Bhubaneswar which was inaugurated in 2024. A two-member delegation of the Asian Athletics Association (AAA) had made an inspection visit last month. The Indoor facility at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar is also hosting the inaugural edition of the National Indoor Athletics Championships from March 24 to 25.

The indoor athletics centre has a 200m synthetic track, an 80m plus 20m running track, and designated areas for long jump, triple jump, pole vault, and shot put, each meticulously designed to meet specific athletic requirements. The facility features 60 twin-sharing rooms for those undergoing full-time coaching. India has made bids for a slew of big-ticket global athletics events in line with the country`s desire to host the 2036 Olympics. The country is bidding for the 2028 World U20 Athletics Championships as well as the 2031 World (Senior) Athletics Championships — both in Ahmedabad. The Gujarat capital is hosting the 2030 Commonwealth Games.

Mohali: The moment Shreyas Iyer walked into the Punjab Kings (PBKS) event here, the room shifted. Conversations paused, cameras lifted in unison, and a wave of anticipation swept through the gathering. For a franchise still chasing its maiden IPL title, Iyer’s presence symbolises both belief and unfinished business.

Last season, under his astute leadership, PBKS came within touching distance of history before falling short in the final against Royal Challengers Bangalore. It was a campaign that reignited the franchise’s identity and restored faith among its supporters. Now, as a new season beckons, Iyer returns with a singular focus: to go one step further.

“It is great to be here ahead of a new IPL season,” Iyer said, composed yet purposeful. “We did well last year as a team, but now it’s about regrouping and planning for the next two months. Once the coach and the rest of the squad join in, we’ll sit together and map things out. Not just me — everyone in the team is eyeing the trophy this season.”

That bond between the captain and the team is mirrored in the dressing room, where Iyer’s relationship with head coach Ricky Ponting continues to be a cornerstone of PBKS’s resurgence.

Iyer’s own form has been central to that revival. Last season, he amassed 604 runs in 17 innings at an average of 50.33 and a strike rate of 175.07, finishing as PBKS’s top scorer and the sixth-highest overall in the tournament. Having already led KKR to an IPL title in 2024 and PBKS to a final, another strong season could reopen the doors to India’s T20I setup.

Yet, the journey back to the field this year hasn’t been straightforward. An abdominal injury sustained during an ODI in Australia forced Iyer into a challenging recovery phase.

“It’s always tough coming back from an injury,” he reflected. “I lost around seven kilos, which was significant. It took a lot of effort to regain that weight and get back into shape. But I enjoy challenges. I’m proud of the work I’ve put in to return and represent my team again.”

If Iyer is the face of PBKS’s ambition, Arshdeep Singh remains its heartbeat with the ball. The left-arm pacer, fresh off a successful T20 World Cup campaign with India, embodies the franchise’s faith in nurturing talent.

“When I first came here, they backed me completely and showed belief in my abilities,” Singh said. “They trusted me when not many others did. I really value that, and I want to stay here for a long time and win trophies for this team.”

Singh’s admiration for his captain is evident, but it comes with a grounded perspective on expectations.

“There isn’t much pressure when we’re out there competing,” he said. “I don’t think Shreyas feels it either. Maybe at Mullanpur, where our home record hasn’t been great, there’s a bit more awareness. But at the same time, the crowd support is incredible — it feels like 30,000 people are running with you.”

As PBKS gear up for another shot at glory, the narrative feels different this time. There is structure where there was once uncertainty, belief where there was once doubt. Growth in India’s eight core infrastructure industries eased to 2.3 per cent in February, down from 3.4 per cent in the same month last year, reflecting weakness in energy-linked segments even as output expanded in several manufacturing-oriented sectors.According to official data, production of crude oil, natural gas and petroleum refinery products declined during the month, moderating the overall expansion in the core sector basket. The eight industries together account for 40.27 per cent of the weight in the Index of Industrial Production (IIP).The combined Index of Eight Core Industries (ICI) rose 2.3 per cent (provisional) year-on-year in February 2026, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry said in a release, noting that cement, steel, fertilisers, coal and electricity recorded positive growth during the month.During April–February of FY26, cumulative growth in core infrastructure output stood at 2.9 per cent, compared with 4.4 per cent in the corresponding period of the previous financial year, indicating a broader slowdown in momentum.“The final growth rate of Index of Eight Core Industries for January 2026 was observed at 4.7 per cent. The cumulative growth rate of ICI during April to February, 2025-26 is 2.9 per cent (provisional) as compared to the corresponding period of last year,” the release said.Coal production — carrying a 10.33 per cent weight — increased 2.3 per cent in February over the same month last year. However, its cumulative index remained unchanged at 185.8 during April–February FY26.Crude oil output (8.98 per cent weight) declined 5.2 per cent year-on-year in February, while the cumulative index contracted 2.5 per cent over the April–February period.Similarly, natural gas production (6.88 per cent weight) fell 5.0 per cent during the month, with its cumulative index slipping 3.5 per cent compared with the year-ago period.Production of petroleum refinery products (28.04 per cent weight) declined 1.0 per cent in February and remained marginally lower — by 0.1 per cent cumulatively — during the first eleven months of the fiscal.Among the growth drivers, fertiliser output (2.63 per cent weight) rose 3.4 per cent year-on-year in February and recorded 2.0 per cent cumulative growth during April–February.Steel production — with a 17.92 per cent weight — posted a strong 7.2 per cent increase in February, while cumulative growth stood at 9.7 per cent.Cement output (5.37 per cent weight) expanded 9.3 per cent during the month and recorded 9.2 per cent growth cumulatively over the fiscal period under review.Electricity generation (19.85 per cent weight) increased 0.5 per cent year-on-year in February and registered 0.9 per cent cumulative growth during April–February.The data indicates that while construction-linked and industrial segments continue to lend support, the contraction in energy-related sectors remains a key drag on overall core infrastructure output.(With inputs from Agencies)

The upcoming edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is all set to kick off from March 28. So far, the schedule of only first 20 matches has been released due to state elections.

Ahead of the cash-rich league, former Team India cricketer Irfan Pathan feels that teams may plan certain things against Rajasthan Royals` (RR) Vaibhav Sooryavanshi.

“It is possible that this season, teams may plan against him, like bowling consistently outside the off stump and keeping the ball away from his reach. He will need to counter that, even if it comes with the risk of getting out,” he said.

He also said that the youngster may face difficulties similar to what Abhishek Sharma faced in the concluded T20 World Cup 2026.

“Also, he might face the same challenges that Abhishek Sharma did (in the T20 World Cup this year), different types of bowling and constant variations in pace, so how he adapts and finds ways to score in those situations will be key,” said Irfan.

On the other hand, former cricketer Aakash Chopra also warned Sooryavanshi, saying that if he doesn`t connect his first ball properly, problems might start for him.

“If the first one is there to be hit, I will go for it` is a very good philosophy. But if it happens three times that you go for the first ball and, God forbid, you don`t connect properly and get out, that is when problems start,” he said.

“The IPL is a different beast. They may not say it in as many words, but it reminds me of my playing days in England, where if you have one or two off days back-to-back, someone would come up and say, `Bro, time to earn your money,` because you are being paid to score runs. That thought lingers on your mind, that you are getting paid to perform, and the IPL has a similar dynamic,” added Chopra.

IPL 2026, Rajasthan Royals vs Chennai Super Kings: Match`s date and venue

RR will begin their IPL 2026 campaign by playing a clash against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on March 30 at the Assam Cricket Association Stadium in Guwahati.
