Sooryavanshi, who was roped in for INR 1.1 crore, became the youngest-ever IPL debutant in 2025 when he played against the Lucknow Super Giants.
The teenager has since built a reputation for his fearless batting, which also played a key role in India winning the ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup in 2026. In the final against England Under-19 cricket team in Harare, he hammered a record-breaking 175 off just 80 balls.
But fans first witnessed his fearless approach during Rajasthan’s match against Lucknow last season, when he smashed seasoned campaigner and India all-rounder Shardul Thakur for a six off the very first ball he faced on debut.
At the BCCI’s annual Naman Awards, Sooryavanshi, who shared the stage with Samson, Abhishek Sharma and Hardik Pandya, was asked about that memorable six. While the youngster began narrating the story himself, Samson stepped in to recount the full conversation.
“I was actually there in the meeting,” Samson said. “Rahul Sir called him into the room and told me, ‘Sanju, we need to talk to him. He’s a very young kid; we have to explain how to go about it.’”
According to Samson, Dravid then asked the youngster about his plans for the match.
“So Rahul Sir asked him, ‘Vaibhav, what’s the plan?’ Vaibhav replied, ‘Kuch nahi Sir, hum to khelenge (Nothing special, Sir. I’ll just play).’ Rahul Sir asked again, ‘What’s your game plan?’”
“Vaibhav said, ‘Agar hume pehla ball mila to hum pehla hi uda denge’ (If the first ball is in my zone, I’ll hit it in the air). And that’s exactly what he did. He’s playing a video game of his own,” Samson added.
Sooryavanshi later scripted another historic moment when he became the youngest centurion in IPL history, smashing 101 off 38 balls against the Gujarat Titans at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium.
The 14-year-old also expressed his ambition to help Rajasthan win the IPL title in 2026.
“The goal is to win the trophy for the team this season. If we win the trophy, it benefits the entire franchise as well as my own performance,” he said. “My aim is to contribute as much as I can to help the team lift the trophy.”
In the 98 years that the Academy Awards have been given out, over 2000 awards have been accepted and presented. Just how rare a tie is can be gauged by the fact that only six of these were ties. That was before this year’s edition. When presenter Kumail Nanjiani said, “It’s a tie,” many in the audience were left confused. Nobody knew if that was even possible. But it did. The Best Live-Action Short Film category saw two winners, the first incident of a tie since 2012 and only the seventh since the awards began almost a century ago.

Oscars 2026 sees rare tie
The Best Live-Action Short Film category isn’t one that is expected to dominate headlines at the Academy Awards, but this year, it will be the one talked about the most (provided the rest of the night does not spring too many surprises). Presenter Kumail Nanjiani announced there was a tie. “It’s a tie! I’m not joking! It’s actually a tie, so everyone calm down,” he said. “Hang on, we’re gonna get through this,” the actor added, before explaining that he will announce one winner first, and they will come up to get their award, followed by the second winner.
The Singers and Two People Exchanging Saliva shared the win, and even the recipients were befuddled, with both recipients mentioning they didn’t know Oscars had ties.
The rarity of tied awards at the Academy Awards
Before this, there had been only six instances of awards at the Oscars being tied, going all the way back to 1932, when Wallace Beery (The Champ) and Fredric March (Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde) tiedfor Best Actor. The presentation itself was a farce, with March announced as the solo winner before the mistake was corrected.
In 1950, A Chance to Live and So Much for So Little tied in the Best Documentary Short Subject category. In 1987, Artie Shaw: Time is All You’ve Got and Down and Out in America were joint winners in the Best Documentary Feature. The Best Short Film Live Action (as the category was then called) had a previous tie in 1995, with Franz Kafka’s It’s a Wonderful Life and Trevor both announced winners. In 2013, Skyfall and Zero Dark Thirty famously won Best Sound Editing.
But the most high-profile occurrence of a tied award was in 1969 when Katharine Hepburn and Barbra Streisand tied for Best Actress. The great Katherine Hepburn won for The Lion in Winter, and Streisand for her iconic turn as Fanny Brice in Funny Girl.
Former India captain and head coach Rahul Dravid, recently honoured with the Col CK Nayudu Lifetime Achievement Award at the BCCI’s annual awards function, expressed his gratitude for the recognition and reflected on the opportunities he has had throughout his cricketing journey. The former skipper also praised Sanju Samson, who was named Player of the Tournament for his match-winning performances in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. “It was really nice to see Sanju be able to sort of get it all together in those final three games — very important games for India,” Dravid said.He highlighted Samson’s perseverance, saying, “For a long time, Sanju has been in and out of the team. He has performed well, he also has had some tough times. It was just really good to see someone like him who’s worked pretty hard.”Dravid added, “It’s really nice to see when it all comes together and the success that he did at such a critical and important phase for Indian cricket.”Samson’s tournament was nothing short of extraordinary. Talk show host and comedian Conan O’Brien returned to host the Oscars for the second year in a row, and this time, he was not afraid to go there. The host, usually measured in his approach to humour, addressed everything from the Middle East conflict to artificial intelligence (AI) in an unusually politically charged monologue.

Conan opened his second Oscars with a reference to “chaotic and frightening times”, a reference to the conflict in the Middle East between Iran, Israel, and the US. But he added that the current geopolitical climate made the Oscars all the more resonant as a globally unifying force.

Conan then turned his attention to the industry itself, reserving some of his best jokes for streaming giants. Taking a dig at Netflix’s aversion to theatrical releases, Conan joked Netflix chief Ted Sarandos was in a theater for the first time. He also lamented the lack of nominees for Amazon MGM Studios. The host chirped, “Why isn’t the website I order toilet paper from winning more Oscars?”
Timothee Chalamet catches strays
Artificial intelligence was also a target of Conan’s monologue as he began with: “I am Conan O’Brien and I am honored to be the last human host of the Academy Awards.” As he took the stage for the ABC telecast at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood on Sunday night for the 98th edition of the ceremony, Conan added, “Next year it’s going to be a Waymo in a tux.”
In a momentarily tense moment, Conan added that the securuty was high at this year’s Oscars. Many assumed he would again refer to the geopolitical situation, but Conan chose this moment to pivot to Best Actor nominee Timothee Chalamet. “I hear there are concerns about attacks from both the opera and ballet communities,” he said, getting a big laugh. The camera immediately cut to a laughing Timothee, whose comments on the art forms during the run-up to the show became fodder for the cultural discourse. “It’s his first time in a theater!” Conan said.
This is Conan’s second year hosting the Oscars. After winning reviews in his hosting debut last year, the 62-year-old longtime talk show host was rehired almost immediately.
He may have given the Academy Awards telecast some stability in the hosting spot after much uncertainty about the role that can often be thankless, including a three-year stretch from 2019-2021 with no host at all.
This year’s awards contest holds an unusually high potential for surprises. The race for best actor is an especially unpredictable one, pitting Timothée Chalamet against Leonardo DiCaprio and Michael B. Jordan.

So, we have now seen the last of former Australia batsman Usman Khawaja. As the news emerged on Sunday that his side Queensland went out of Sheffield Shield title contention, it became clear that Khawaja had already played his last first-class game.

Khawaja, whose roots are in Pakistan, is not part of Queensland’s game against Tasmania, which is underway at Hobart at present. After bowling out Tasmania for just 198, Queensland, eyeing the bonus points, really needed to bat well, but they fell by the wayside on Sunday as they were bowled for just 178 on day two. At stumps on Saturday, they were 48/3.
Khawaja missed the match on account of the birth of his child. He would have been available for the final scheduled for March 26, but alas, his team failed to qualify.
Earlier this year, in January, Khawaja had announced his Test retirement in the lead-up to the fifth Ashes Test. And he did play a role in Australia’s thumping 4-1 win. As he came to play his last Test innings in Sydney, the whole of the stadium rose to applaud him to the crease. England players also formed a guard of honour to welcome him. Ahead of the match, Khawaja had delivered an impassioned retirement speech.

“God, through cricket, has given me far more than I ever imagined. He’s given me memories I’ll carry forever, friendships that go well beyond the game and lessons that shaped me into who I am off the field.
“Along the way, I’ve learned that not everything in life is in our control. I train my best, but then it’s all up to Allah, and Allah is the best of planners. If he wasn’t, I wouldn’t be here right now.
“This game humbles you. It tests your patience, your resilience and your character, and if you’re lucky, it teaches you gratitude, even on days that doesn’t go your way. Alhamdulillah, always,” he said.
Khawaja started his first-class career 18 years ago in New South Wales colours. In 2012, he moved to Queensland to reinvigorate his career. In all, the 39-year-old has featured in 229 first-class matches and scored more than 15,000 runs with the help of 43 centuries. He played 88 Tests and scored more than 6,000 runs with the help of 16 centuries.
