Nicole Kidman trains to become death doula after mother’s death

Hollywood star Nicole Kidman has shared that she is training to become a death doula after being inspired by her own experiences before her mom Janelle Ann Kidman, passed away in September 2024 at the age of 84.

A death doula is a non-medical professional who provides holistic emotional, spiritual, and practical support to individuals and their families navigating terminal illness, death, and bereavement.

According to the San Francisco Chronicle, Nicole said during a Silk Speaker Series talk at the University of San Francisco`s War Memorial Gym: “As my mother was passing, she was lonely, and there was only so much the family could provide.”

“Between my sister and I, we have so many children and our careers and our work, and wanting to take care of her because my father wasn`t in the world anymore, and that`s when I went, ‘I wish there was these people in the world that were there to sit impartially and just provide solace and care.` So that`s part of my expansion and one of the things I will be learning.”

The actress isn`t the only famous face to reveal plans to be a death doula, reports femalefirst.co.uk.

In 2021, Riley Keough shared that she had undergone training and found supporting others proved to be helpful with her own grief over her brother Benjamin Keough taking his own life in July 2020.

The Daisy Jones and the Six star, whose mom Lisa Marie Presley died in January 2023, said:

“That`s really what`s helped me, being able to put myself in a position of service. If I can help other people, maybe I can find some way to help myself.”

Director Chloe Zhao recently revealed she had been training to be a death doula to help her overcome her own fears about the end of life.

With the Indian Premier League and Pakistan Super League taking place simultaneously in the two neighbouring countries, the focus has perhaps been a little too much towards the IPL, even in Pakistan. This came into focus in this past week as a number of international stars were asked to compare the PSL to the IPL – something that has annoyed Pakistan cricketers for how humiliating the question becomes, including former batter Ahmad Shahzad.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Shahzad dressed down the members of the press who were responsible for prompting questions to Kusal Mendis and Rilee Rossouw that tried to pit the IPL against the PSL, as well as criticising the South African’s response.

“Kusal Mendis is playing and performing in the PSL, and he is being asked about how he left last year to go play in the IPL. Look at what you’re doing,” Shahzad said sternly, not happy with the member of the press who had posed this question and subsequently earned nothing but silence from the Sri Lankan.

More concerning for Shahzad was the question posed to Rossouw to compare the teams, as well as the Protea batter’s response to it – particularly given that he has had a poor time of things in the PSL.

“Then you look at Rilee Roussow – you watch his performance and you can’t tell what is happening, what isn’t happening, but he is choosing to slander,” said Shahzad. “They are asking him what he thinks of IPL – now during PSL, you can’t appreciate the IPL. He said it’s a Bollywood movie, and that the competitiveness is here.”

Shahzad demands ‘technical’ answers to comparisons

Rossouw has only 79 runs in four PSL matches for Quetta Gladiators, not a great return – but the South African batter hasn’t had particularly remarkable performances in his IPL stints with RCB, DC, or PBKS either.

“When someone is taking money from you while playing PSL, do you think he will say IPL is number one? So it’s not a serious question,” continued Shahzad, hammering the reporter for asking such a question. “If he doesn’t say PSL, won’t they make his life hell? There’s very few people who can work with honesty.”

Ultimately, Shahzad provided a concerted set of reasons for why the IPL has outpaced the PSL – to do largely with the quality of domestic talent but also the international stars who turn up for each tournament, and how the quality of cricket demanded in the IPL is simply a tier above.

“There is no comparison between them, you need to make a question with some common sense. There was no purpose for this question, but even if they say it, you have to give a technical answer. It sounds like Rossouw has released some personal anger on the IPL,” said Shahzad, suggesting that it was a biased response by the South African.

Govt prefers price mechanism over rationing

The minister explained that the government is currently relying on price adjustments and targeted subsidies to manage demand, rather than imposing strict supply controls.“What we’ve seen is it has led to law and order situations in other countries,” he said, referring to rationing measures elsewhere. “If demand destruction can be done through price transmission combined with targeted subsidies… that’s a much better way to go.”However, he cautioned that this approach may not hold if the crisis deepens. “I have to put an asterisk there, it all depends how long this goes and how far this goes,” he added, signalling that rationing remains a fallback option.

Former India pacer and current Delhi Capitals bowling coach Munaf Patel has raised serious concerns about India’s cricketing ecosystem, calling for urgent reforms in the National Cricket Academy (NCA) and the domestic structure.Speaking on TOI Sports’ Bombay Sports Exchange Podcast, Munaf did not hold back in his assessment, suggesting that the current system lacks a strong feeder pathway and has inadvertently sidelined specialised institutions. He stressed that grassroots infrastructure, including access to physiotherapists, trainers, and structured coaching, must be strengthened at the state level to produce quality cricketers consistently.

Munaf was particularly critical of the NCA, describing it as overly focused on rehabilitation rather than holistic player development.“Just look at the setup,” he said. “If you go inside the NCA, you’ll understand everything. I’ve been saying this for a long time, it needs to change, 100 percent.”Tracing its origins, Munaf pointed out that the NCA was built in the early 2000s based on Australia’s Centre of Excellence model. ”Back in 2000-01, when the NCA started, Raj Singh Dungarpur and others built it by adopting Australia’s Centre of Excellence model. They brought their coaching manual and implemented it in India. Since then, Australia has updated their manuals multiple times, but we are still following the same 25-year-old manual from 2000. It hasn’t really evolved. Hopefully, with the new Centre of Excellence, things might change, but so far, that hasn’t happened,” Munaf said during podcast. One of his sharpest criticisms was of the NCA’s current role, which he likened to a “hospital.””Tell me this, when I get injured, I go to the NCA. Why? To get fit. It has become more like a hospital. You recover, come back, and go straight into the team. But who corrects your mistakes? If I’m a bowler or batter, it’s not just about fitness, my skills also need improvement,” Munaf said.Munaf also revealed that many players deny to go to the NCA, but refrain from speaking out due to fear of livelihood.”Players are fearful of going to the NCA, nobody really wants to go. But everyone stays quiet because their livelihood depends on it. No one wants to speak up as it could create trouble. However, the higher authorities should know what’s right and wrong,” he added.Highlighting structural gaps, Munaf pointed out the lack of monitoring across India’s vast domestic circuit, ”There’s no system tracking what’s happening in domestic cricket. For that, the NCA needs to be more regional,” he said.

His latest commercials for SuperMoney UPI have been creating a buzz online, with many fans saying they are enjoying them even more than his recent films. In one of his latest commercials, he is seen nonchalantly calling SuperMoney “Superman” before driving off after just one take. Another advertisement shows Salman forgetting the script, casually reading out the lines, declaring it done, and walking off the set.

The latest one shows Salman keeping it simple yet stylish, sporting a blue shirt tucked into brown shorts, paired with his signature sunglasses. The actor effortlessly delivers the line, “Belt khareedna hai, watch khareedna hai yaa sunglasses khareedna hai, jo bhi bakwas aapko khareedna hai khareedo par SuperMoney UPI se pay karo, 5% tak aapko cashback milega” (If you want to buy a belt, a watch or sunglasses, whatever random stuff you want to buy, go ahead and buy it, but pay through SuperMoney UPI. However, a source recently told Bollywood Hungama, “Earlier, the film was inspired by a real event. But as per the request of the Ministry of Defence, Salman Khan and director Apoorva Lakhia reshot the film by adding a fictional spin to the story. Accordingly, he reshot nearly 40% of the film as he added some romantic scenes, backstory, etc. The makers submitted the new cut, hoping that they would get the NOC. But the Ministry still has apprehensions.”

The nuclear watchdog’s chief says there is a rapid increase in operations at North Korea’s Yongbyon reactor.

North Korea is showing a “very serious increase” in its ability to produce atomic weapons, according to Rafael Grossi, the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

The diplomatically isolated country is believed to operate multiple facilities for enriching uranium, a key step in making nuclear warheads, South Korea’s spy agency has said. These include one at the Yongbyon nuclear site, which Pyongyang purportedly decommissioned after talks but later reactivated in 2021.

“In our periodic assessments, we have been able to confirm that there’s a rapid increase in the operations” of the Yongbyon reactor, Grossi told reporters in Seoul on Wednesday.

The agency also observed a rise in operations at Yongbyon’s reprocessing unit and light-water reactor, as well as the activation of other facilities, Grossi said.

“All that points to a very serious increase in the capabilities of [the] DPRK in the area of nuclear weapons production, which is estimated at a few dozen warheads,” he said, using North Korea’s official name.

‘New facility’

North Korea, which conducted its first nuclear test in 2006, is under a slew of United Nations sanctions for its banned weapons programmes.

It has declared that it will never surrender its nuclear weapons, and cut off access to IAEA inspectors in 2009.

The agency has noted the construction of a “new facility similar to the enrichment facility in Yongbyon”, Grossi said.

It was “not easy to calculate” any production increases without visiting the site.

However, “we consider, looking at external features of the facility, that there will be a significant increase in the enrichment capacity of the DPRK”, he said.

Asked whether Russia was assisting North Korea’s nuclear development, Grossi said the IAEA had not seen “anything in particular in that regard”.

North Korea has sent ground troops and artillery shells to support Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and observers say Pyongyang is receiving military technology assistance from Moscow in return.
