NN Marathon Rotterdam: Barwal breaks 48-yr-old marathon national record

Himachal Pradesh’s Sawan Barwal on Sunday scripted history by breaking the 48-year-old marathon national record, the longest standing mark in Indian athletics, at the NN Marathon Rotterdam. Barwal clocked 2 hours 11 minutes and 58 seconds in a world class field to finish 20th in the elite marathon race and erase the previous national record of 2:12:00 which stood since 1978 in Shivnath Singh`s name. The other Indian in the fray, Gopi Thonakal finished 23rd as he ran the 42.195km distance with a time of 2:13:16. Barwal`s achievement was all the more praiseworthy as the Rotterdam event was his first marathon race. He had not run any official marathon race before Sunday.

This was his second competition of the season after taking part in the World Athletics Cross Country Championships in the USA in January. Hailing from a village in Joginder Nagar in Mandi district of Himachal Pradesh, the 28-year-old Barwal has trained hard for many years, establishing himself as a reputed long-distance runner. His feat on Sunday was the culmination of that hard work, as he literally emerged from the hills of Himachal Pradesh to the flat roads of Rotterdam. Barwal ran at a steady pace in the gruelling race but windy conditions in the last 5km took a toll on the Indian runner. “It was pretty cold and windy. I made a mistake of pouring water on my head at the water station,” Barwal said. “I was running at a comfortable pace until the 37km mark. But the last 2km was more challenging as I had to just plod to cross the finish line.

“I was mentally and physically prepared to clock 2:10:00. But tough conditions robbed me of further improving my national record.” The Army runner fell down after crossing the finish line due to exhaustion. He was taken for medical assistance. “I`ve recovered and am feeling better,” he added. Barwal, an Armyman, was at the 27th spot at around the halfway mark (21km) with a time of 1:04:43 while Gopi was 33rd with 1:04:44. At the 30km mark, he was below the 2:10:00 marathon pace. At the 40km mark, Barwal`s time was 2:03:39. In the closing stages of the gruelling race, he slowed down to cross the finish line at 2:11:58. “It was a good learning experience in Rotterdam,” he said. Barwal`s past race record on the World Athletics website does not mention any marathon though he has run many half marathons, and 5000m and 10000m races. He first broke onto the national scene when he won a 10000m silver at the 2022 Federation Cup National Championships.

The same year, he won a 5000m bronze at the National Games in Gujarat. His first international medal came in 2023 when he won a bronze in the Asian Half Marathon Championships in Dubai. Barwal won his first national title at the Federation Cup in 2024 with a 5000m gold. But 2025 was the most productive year for Barwal as he won the 5000m and 10000m gold at the National Games in Uttarakhand, 10000m gold at the Federation Cup and a 5000m bronze in the World Athletics Bronze Level Continental Tour event in Bhubaneswar. Trained by Gopal Thakur, Barwal has also been a regular participant in the Delhi Half Marathon and World 25K Kolkata Run. He won gold among Indian elite runners in the Delhi Half Marathon in 2024. Barwal was interested in sports since his school days, and played everything from badminton to athletics. However, after winning a medal in a school event, he decided to become an athlete. He subsequently won medals in zonal and district-level competitions. He joined the Indian army in 2019.

Jana Nayagan editor not involved in HD print leak, says association president Gopi while addressing allegations

The South Indian Film Editors Association president, Gopi, and the Film Employees Federation of South India (FEFSI) president, RK Selvamani, spoke to the press on Monday to address allegations regarding the Jana Nayagan leak. At the conference at FEFSI headquarters in Chennai, they denied editors’ involvement in the leak, claiming that an internal inquiry has cleared them. Editors Association president on Jana Nayagan leak

According to news agency ANI, Gopi strongly denied any editor’s involvement in the leak of Jana Nayagan. He stated that the ‘editors will never do this kind of work’ and clarified that ‘an internal inquiry had already been conducted by their team’ in the matter. Given that six unnamed individuals have already been arrested so far and a report has already been filed, he added that ‘the main accused behind the alleged leak will be arrested soon.’ At the conference, Gopi also spoke about how people are pointing fingers at Pradeep, the editor of Jana Nayagan, after the videos that leaked online indicated it was an edit copy. He stated that Pradeep should not be accused without proof, as the investigation is still going on.

FEFSI president RK Selvamani responds to allegations

Director Ameer had earlier accused Jana Nayagan’s editors and crew members of being involved in the leak. Selvamani hit out, saying that Ameer should retract his accusations against the editors and crew. He also cautioned that such incidents will increase as digitalisation advances. “Piracy is not new and has been an ongoing issue in the film industry, and steps are being taken to create systems to control such leaks and avoid similar incidents in the future,” he said. This comes after he also told the press that the film’s leak was a ‘systemic failure,’ placing the onus on the central and state governments for justice.

CBFC denies involvement in Jana Nayagan leak

Initially, when an HD print of Jana Nayagan was circulated on X (formerly Twitter), Instagram, YouTube and other platforms on April 9, fingers were also pointed at the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), which had delayed certifying the film. In a statement, the board said: “Reports alleging that the Tamil film ‘Jana Nayagan’ has been leaked from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) are baseless and false.”

The statement added, “Access to the content is password-protected, and the KDM remains solely with the producer/filmmaker. Without a valid KDM, the film cannot be accessed or viewed. The DCP (Digital Cinema Package) of ‘Jana Nayagan’ was handed over to the applicant in Mumbai on 17 March with due acknowledgement, and has remained with them since.”

Jana Nayagan, Vijay’s last film before entering politics, was supposed to be released in January but was postponed due to delayed certification. Even as a release date has not been announced, the film was leaked online.

Pakistan stock market crash: KSE-100 plunges nearly 6,000 points after US-Iran talks fail, oil surge

Pakistan’s stock market saw a sharp sell-off on Monday, with the benchmark KSE-100 index plunging nearly 6,000 points as the collapse of US-Iran ceasefire talks and rising tensions in the Strait of Hormuz hit investor sentiment.KSE-100 index dropped 3.5 per cent to hit an intraday low of 1,61,638, reversing last week’s sharp rally when it had surged over 12,000 points after news of a temporary ceasefire between the US and Iran, ET reported. The failed negotiations, mediated by Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and army chief Asim Munir, have heightened fears of a prolonged conflict in Middle East, triggering volatility across regional markets.US President Donald Trump over the weekend ordered military forces to begin blockading the Strait of Hormuz and clearing suspected sea mines, escalating the situation after the talks in Islamabad failed to produce an agreement.“So, there you have it, the meeting went well, most points were agreed to, but the only point that really mattered, NUCLEAR, was not. Effective immediately, the United States Navy, the Finest in the World, will begin the process of BLOCKADING any and all Ships trying to enter, or leave, the Strait of Hormuz…We will also begin destroying the mines the Iranians laid in the Straits. Any Iranian who fires at us, or at peaceful vessels, will be BLOWN TO HELL!” Trump said in a post on Truth Social.Following the remarks, Iran’s Revolutionary Guards warned that military vessels approaching the Strait would be treated as a ceasefire breach and dealt with “harshly and decisively”.The escalation around the Strait of Hormuz pushed crude prices above $100 per barrel, adding to inflation concerns and dampening global risk appetite. The sharp fall in Pakistan’s markets also came amid a broader weakness in Asian equities. India’s Sensex and Nifty fell more than 2 per cent in early trade, while Japan’s Nikkei, China’s Shanghai Composite and South Korea’s Kospi traded in the red.Despite the volatility, Jefferies’ global equity strategist Christopher Wood said Pakistan could present a “high-beta opportunity” around IMF support, while maintaining a marginally positive long-term outlook on India.

'Dhurandhar' actor Aditya Uppal confesses he grew up watching him on VCR: 'Standing next to him felt like an achievement'
Aditya Uppal, who played Omar Hamid in Dhurandhar: The Revenge, calls himself a lifelong Sanjay Dutt fan from VCR days. Intimidated yet charmed by Dutt’s support on set—from first Amritsar meet to improv freedom—he dreams of his next co-star.

Aditya Uppal, who recently shared the screen space with Sanjay Dutt in ‘Dhurandhar: The Revenge’, has named the one actor he’d love to team up with next. In a recent interview, the actor opened up about his time working alongside Dutt.

Aditya Uppal on working with Sanjay Dutt

Speaking to India Today, Uppal reflected on working with Sanjay, noting the natural pressure of sharing the screen with such a legendary figure. “You do feel intimidated, obviously. He is a senior actor, a name we’ve all grown up watching. But the beauty of Sanjay sir is that he makes everything very comfortable. He brings a certain charm with him that instantly lightens the atmosphere on set,” he said. According to Uppal, Dutt’s vibe enhanced his performance. “He creates a space where you can stay in character, play around, and even improvise. He really lets you be,” he said.

Aditya Uppal as Sanjay Dutt fan

Uppal described the collaboration as a profoundly personal milestone. “I’ve been his fan since childhood, so just standing next to him felt like an achievement in itself. Sharing screen space and dialogues with him was truly special.” The actor playing Omar Hamid in Aditya Dhar‘s film echoed this sentiment. “I’ve been his fan since childhood, so just standing next to him felt like an achievement in itself. Sharing screen space and dialogues with him was truly special,” he shared. Pointing to a memorable highlight, Uppal recalled, “Even during my close-up shots, he chose to stay back and perform the scene with me instead of stepping away and using a double. That kind of support means a lot, especially for someone like me.”

Aditya Uppal first meet with Sanjay Dutt

Describing their first meeting, Uppal said it happened right on set due to a lack of time. He said, “I was cast at the last minute, and my first meeting with him was directly on set in Amritsar during the Hamza party scene. I remember touching his feet and telling him honestly that I’m one of his biggest fans, someone who grew up watching his films on VCRs. I told him how much I admire his work, especially Sadak and Saajan. That’s how the conversation started, and from there, everything became very easy”.

Recalling an old memory, he shared how she once cooked food for his team late at night after a recording session. “It was around 1:30 at night. As we were about to leave, she saw us and asked us to wait. Within minutes, she went inside, cooked chicken and rice herself, and insisted we eat before leaving. She was that kind of person,” he said.

After news broke of Asha’s death on Sunday, tributes poured in from across the country. Shah Rukh Khan wrote, “It’s truly sad to learn about Asha Tai’s passing. Chasing 165, Gujarat Titans cruised to 165/3 in 18.4 overs, sealing a comfortable win at the Ekana Stadium on Sunday.Arjun Tendulkar, son of legendary Sachin Tendulkar, who did not feature in the playing XI against Gujarat Titans, was spotted at the airport with his LSG teammates. He was seen alongside his sister Sara Tendulkar and wife Saaniya Chandhok.Sara and Saaniya had earlier been present in the stands in Lucknow, cheering for LSG during their clash against Gujarat Titans.Arjun tied the knot with Saaniya in a grand ceremony in Mumbai on March 5, 2026. He is part of the Lucknow Super Giants squad this season, having been bought for Rs 30 lakh at the IPL 2026 auction.LSG captain Rishabh Pant admitted that his side fell short with the bat in the loss to Gujarat Titans.“See, definitely not enough runs. There’s nothing. From the fact that they bowled well. I think in a wicket like this, a score like 170 to 180 is a really good score. But, you know, the wicket kept on falling, and they put enough pressure on us to get those wickets going,” Pant said.He added that although LSG had their chances, they failed to capitalise on crucial moments.“There were opportunities in the game. We just couldn’t grab it enough,” he said.Pant, however, backed his batting unit, stressing that it is still early in the tournament and there is no need to panic. He expressed confidence in the experienced players to step up in the coming matches.“See, definitely it’s a great lineup. But the tournament has just started here, you know. We’re not putting pressure on players because, especially the senior guys, they know what to do,” he said.
