Bihu Special | Devoleena Bhattacharjee: Being a mother has made the festival more meaningful

For Assam-born Devoleena Bhattacherjee, Rongali Bihu — celebrated today and marking the Assamese New Year — is a time to look ahead with hope and gratitude, as she wishes for “new opportunities and growth”. “There are three types of Bihu, and currently we are celebrating Rongali or Bohag Bihu, the most significant one, marking the Assamese New Year, spring, and the start of the farming season. Bihu is not just a festival for Assam, it’s the soul of the state… I look for new opportunities and growth, and hope the year is prosperous for my family, my friends, and everyone,” the actor shares.

Her childhood memories of Bihu are steeped in colour, music and tradition. Recalling those moments, the 40-year-old says, “Celebrating Bihu with traditional music, dance, and feasts has always been special. I loved dressing up in the traditional mekhela chador, a two-piece ensemble made from muga, paat, or eri silk. It has a cylindrical lower Mekhela and a long, draped Chador with intricate handwoven motifs. Going out with friends to attend events and participate in them was always so much fun.”

As the Assamese New Year begins, her hopes extend beyond personal aspirations. “I wish our state, our country, and the world celebrate brotherhood. We all enjoy peace and harmony. Assam enjoys good harvesting, my land always stays green and fruitful. For me, I look for new opportunities and growth, the year should be prosperous for my family, my friends, and everyone,” she shares. Even while living away from Assam, staying connected to her roots comes naturally to her. “It’s not difficult at all. My heart starts singing and my body starts dancing to Bihu songs. I can feel the festival in the air. I have grown up celebrating it. While I celebrate at home, there are many people from Assam in Mumbai who organise Bihu events here as well,” she says.

Now a mother of a 1.5 year old baby boy Joy, she insists that Motherhood, has only deepened her connection with the festival rather than changing it. “Being a mother never takes away your individuality, it just makes you more responsible. A child is never a barrier, they bring more celebration to any festival. Since my son has come into my life, every festival feels more meaningful and worthwhile,” she says.

She believes cultural roots are something that come naturally to the next generation. “There is nothing you need to introduce — it’s in the blood. He is growing up watching us, just like I grew up watching my parents celebrate festivals. When he is old enough to understand, I will take him to Assam during Bihu so he can truly experience and remember what the festival is about,” she elaborates.

Some traditions, however, she is especially excited to pass on. “Dressing up is something I really look forward to. I still enjoy wearing Assamese ethnic wear, the Mekhela Chador. I’ll make him wear a dhoti — I’m sure the pictures we click will become very special memories for him,” she adds with a smile.

In a household that brings together different cultural backgrounds, Bihu becomes part of a larger celebration of togetherness. “It’s not just about my husband — even before marriage, I had friends from different religions. We celebrate each other’s festivals. As husband and wife, we celebrate everything with the same heart and laughter. Festivals aren’t about religion, they’re about love, blessings, and brotherhood,” she says, adding, “It’s not about adapting, it’s about understanding and enjoying. From Bihu to Eid, from festivals of Maharashtra in Mumbai to Holi, Diwali, Navratri, and even Christmas, we celebrate everything, understanding the meaning behind each and enjoying the blessings.”

At the core of her Bihu celebrations, however, lies a deeply personal ritual she continues to uphold. “I have seen my mother offer morning prayers, thanking God for all the blessings and asking for protection, happiness, and success for the year ahead. She would prepare an Assamese feast with traditional pitha, sticky rice delicacies, and jolpaan. I continue the same, I pray for my family,” she signs off.

Krunal explains how impact player rule is redefining strategy in league

In the IPL 2026 match against Mumbai Indians (MI), Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) secured a win by 18 runs at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

RCB`s all-rounder Krunal Pandya said that the Impact Player rule has changed batting dynamics in the league. Considering that the team consists of eight batsmen, he said that players such as Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and Mukul Choudhary start smashing from the very first ball.

“Previously, without an impact player, you had a number six all-rounder, a number seven all-rounder. Batsmanship was quite different. But now, having eight pure batters, plus the skill set, you see the young boys, like Mukul, Vaibhav, so many of them are just coming and just hitting from ball one consistently. So as a bowler, I always want to be one step ahead with the skill set, as well as with the mental battle, as well,” he told reporters.

The all-rounder also said that it becomes difficult for the finger spinners to bowl on flat tracks with the opponent team having eight batsmen.

“And it has just purely come from that, whether it`s me bowling those, bending my knee and bowling that bouncer. I mean, it just, I`m glad that it is coming out well and hope that in this format, finger spinners can survive and can take something out of it and do well. Because for finger spinner, with having such flat tracks, and eight batters, it has become very difficult,” he said.

In the match against the “Paltan”, he returned with the figures of one wicket for 26 runs in four overs.

Following the win, RCB is placed in the third position on the points table. With three wins and one loss, the Rajat Patidar-led team has a net run rate (NRR) of +1.148 and six points.

The Royal Challengers` next game is against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) on April 15 at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.

‘Delimitation is the issue’: Sonia Gandhi vs PM Modi on women’s quota bill Explained

A special meeting of Parliament has been called on April 16-18 to consider two proposed legislations or bills to amend the Constitution to expand the Lok Sabha from 543 to 816 seats and reserve one-third of them – 273 to be exact – for women.

Sonia Gandhi has argued in favor of women’s reservation but against delimitation based on old census; PM Modi says that the opposition had demanded reservation before 2029. (ANI, HT file photo)

But it comes with several caveats, one of which is the necessary delimitation of India’s electoral map. Simply put, boundaries will be redrawn to create more Lok Sabha constituencies and then potentially assembly constituencies.

it delimitation The scheme has emerged as a major controversy between PM Narendra Modi’s government and the Congress-led opposition.

Government will need some opposition help Pass these bills, as constitutional amendments require a two-thirds majority which the BJP-led NDA does not have.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi says that these changes fulfill the promises made by all the parties together. But Congress leader Sonia Gandhi has written that the real issue is not women’s reservation at all – with which she says no one has any issue – but the delimitation exercise being linked to it.

Both positions were publicly traded within hours of each other on Monday, defining the battle lines in the special session.

What the bill proposes: Use Census 2011, don’t wait

The Union Cabinet under the leadership of Modi Approved the introduction of two bills During the special meeting.

The first is a constitutional amendment which requires a two-thirds majority in both houses of Parliament. The second issue relates to the delimitation or redrawing of Lok Sabha seat maps at the grassroots level. Together, the bill aims to increase Lok Sabha seats by 50% – from 543 to 816 – with an additional 273 seats reserved for women.

Importantly, the exercise will be based on the 2011 census and not the ongoing census which began this month and data for which will not be available for some time.

An earlier amendment to the women’s quota, which was passed with unanimous support in 2023, had linked quota implementation to the next census, which is not yet in full swing. This would mean that the actual reservation would not be effective for the 2029 Lok Sabha elections. Because, first of all census will have to be conductedAnd then delimitation – a long process.

Now, a Delimitation Commission is proposed to redraw the constituency boundaries before the 2029 general elections, using the 2011 census instead of waiting for the latest census.

Modi: ‘Opposition demanded 2029, we fulfilled it’

Speaking on Monday, PM Modi claimed that the special step would accomplish what all parties wanted. She reminded that in 2023, when the original Women’s Reservation Bill was passed, all parties had said that it should be implemented by 2029.

“Nobody wanted the bill to be passed and not implemented, especially our opposition leaders. They were very vocal that it should be implemented in 2029. Keeping that timeline in mind, the government decided to take seriously what the opposition said,” he said.

Describing the upcoming special sittings of Parliament as a historic moment, Modi urged all parties to pass the amendments unanimously.

He said, “I am confident that just as it was passed (in 2023) and the glory of Parliament increased, this time too with the collective efforts of all, the dignity of Parliament will reach new heights.”

Sonia Gandhi writes on ‘real issues’

However, Congress Parliamentary Party President Sonia Gandhi drew a sharp contrast between the women’s quota and the delimitation exercise that accompanies it.

“Reservation for women is not an issue here. It has already been decided. The real issue is delimitation, which based on information available informally is extremely dangerous and an attack on the Constitution,” she wrote in an article. The Hindu.

He argued that any delimitation exercise should before a new censusAs has been the practice historically.

He openly raised the question of states’ participation in the Lok Sabha. He said any delimitation should not put those smaller states and states that have been leaders in family planning – such as most South Indian states like Tamil Nadu and Kerala – at an “absolute or relative disadvantage”.

He argued that even a proportional increase in seats could harm such states, as “the difference in absolute numbers would increase”.

The BJP has said that the direct increase to 50% does not affect the states’ proportional share in Parliament.

Sonia also raised questions on the timing of change in the government’s stance from 2023. “Why did it take Prime Minister Narendra Modi 30 months to make his U-turn?”. he asked, suggesting that the special session was called to manage “political narratives” amid assembly elections in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, West Bengal, Assam and Puducherry.

He accused the government of being “hasty in bringing about extremely far-reaching changes in our politics”.

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge also wrote a letter to the Prime Minister on Monday and raised questions on the timing. He said that the government is seeking the cooperation of the opposition without giving sufficient details.

South worried: ‘Give quota, but why delimitation’

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK supremo MK Stalin has accused the government of deliberately combining two issues – reservation and redrawing of Lok Sabha seat boundaries.

They demanded that women’s reservation be implemented immediately without fresh delimitation or change in the number of Lok Sabha seats.

In an interview with news agency PTI over the weekend, he said, “The central government is not worried about implementing reservation for women. If their concerns were genuine, they could have done it immediately. Instead of doing so, the BJP-led Center is thinking of using it as a weapon to deal with the protests and carrying out a delimitation exercise based on population.”

How do seats rise?

The delimitation part of the government’s plan has important implications for the federal balance in Parliament.

Under the proposed 50% flat increase, the 80 Lok Sabha seats in states like Uttar Pradesh would increase to 120; Bihar 40 to 60. These are the states of Hindi belt where BJP is strong.

In the South where the BJP mostly struggles, it will go from 39 to about 59 in Tamil Nadu and 20 to 30 in Kerala.

The government’s position is that since the seats of every state increase in the same proportion, there is no change in the share of any state in Parliament.

The five southern states – Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana – collectively account for 23.8% of the current 543-seat House. After the expansion, they will have 23.9% of the 816-seat house. There is hardly any change.

However, the Gandhi family and several chief ministers argue that proportionate share is not the whole picture.

The absolute difference in seat numbers between the northern Hindi belt states and the southern states will increase – according to a basic calculation, the North will collectively get 88 seats and the South 66 seats.

This would make it difficult for smaller factions to form coalitions to block constitutional amendments or oppose changes to the tax-sharing arrangement between states.

parliamentary arithmetic

There are essentially three levels of majority for legal changes in India.

An ordinary bill requires a simple majority.

Constitutional amendment under Article 368 requires a special majority, meaning two-thirds of the members present and voting. This is a major hurdle facing these bills.

There are 543 members in the Lok Sabha. Simple majority means 272. For special majority, two-thirds of the members are present and vote, this means 362.

The current Constitutional Amendment Bill changes Articles 81 (composition of the Lok Sabha), 82 (delimitation), 330 (SC/ST reservation) and 334A (women’s reservation), requiring a special majority.

The NDA has about 293 seats in the Lok Sabha, comfortably above 272 but less than 362. In the Rajya Sabha, the NDA is in a similar position – having a majority but not a two-thirds majority on its own.

Depending on turnout on polling day, the government needs 60 to 70 additional votes in the Lok Sabha from outside the NDA to cross the two-thirds bar. Regional parties – BJD, YSR Congress, and others not firmly in the NDA or India block – are attracting swing votes.

The second bill, on formation of the new Delimitation Commission, is ordinary legislation and requires only a simple majority which the NDA can manage.

Third, even higher category bills require a special majority. plus Ratification by at least half the state legislatures. This applies to provisions directly touching the federal structure, such as the division of powers between the Center and the states, or the election of the President.

None of these require the approval of the state legislature. Therefore, despite the huge federal implications of this practice – which the South is incensed about – state legislatures have no formal veto. They can’t stop these bills. They can only exert political pressure.

Kunickaa Sadanand talks about Awez Darbar and Nagma Mirajkar’s breakup

In a recent conversation with Telly Masala, Kunickaa was asked about Awez and Nagma’s breakup rumours, and she confirmed, “It is very emotional because dono ke saath mera bohot accha connection tha. Dono ko main bohot pyaar karti hoon (I had a good connection with both of them and I loved both of them a lot). I know Nagma and Awez ne bhi ek doosre ko bohot support kiya (I know they both have supported each other a lot).”

She added, “So, I wish ki ho sakta hai agar kuch sulah ho jaaye ya kuch ho jaaye. Jo bhi ho. Agar nahi bhi ho, dono ko acche partner mile kyuki unhe mile the aur shayad destiny nahi chahti thi. But I hope they find good partners (So, I wish that maybe they can reconcile or work things out somehow—whatever happens. And even if they do not, I hope both of them find good partners, because they had found each other once and perhaps destiny did not want it to last. But I truly hope they both find good partners).”

About Awez Darbar and Nagma Mirajkar’s relationship

Nagma and Awez first sparked dating rumours around 2019 when their social media collaborations and chemistry caught fans’ attention. They admitted to being in a relationship during their stint in Bigg Boss 19. During the show, Awez even proposed to Nagma in a heartfelt moment that took over the internet. After coming out of the show, Nagma had revealed that she was planning her wedding with Awez.

However, in March, when Awez celebrated his birthday with friends and family, Nagma was missing from the bash, which led to speculation about their breakup. During the party, Awez also hinted at their separation and told Telly Masala, “Iske baare mein hum achhe se baith ke ekdum pyaare se baat karenge, kyunki bohat saari baatein hain, bataunga aapko (We will sit down and talk about this properly and lovingly, because there is a lot to discuss, I will tell you everything).”

Meanwhile, neither Nagma nor Awez won the Bigg Boss trophy. While Nagma was evicted in the third week, Awez was also eliminated early in the show. The season was eventually won by Gaurav Khanna, who beat Farrhana Bhatt and Pranit More to lift the trophy.

MUMBAI: Jasprit Bumrah‘s wait to open his account this season is now beginning to hurt Mumbai India’s campaign in IPL 2026.The 31-year-old premier pacer’s barren run stayed intact against Royal Challengers Bengaluru at the Wankhede Stadium on Sunday night, as he went for 0-35 in four overs in MI’s 18-run loss. Across his five games, in which he has bowled 122 deliveries, Bumrah is yet to take a wicket for MI. This season, he has bowled 15 overs across four matches, and while he has given away just 123 runs, there is nothing to show in the wickets column.Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW!The sequence of Bumrah’s performance in the last five IPL innings reads: 0/40 (4 overs) vs PBKS, Ahmedabad, 2025, 0/35 (4) vs KKR, Wankhede, 2026, 0/21 (4) vs DC, Delhi, 2026, 0/32 (3) vs RR, Guwahati, 2026, 0/35 (4) vs RCB, Wankhede, 2026.However, MI’s bowling woes aren’t about Bumrah’s wicketless run. While the ‘strike bowler’ hasn’t been able to strike, his economy rate of 8.20 is still the best amongst the bowlers. The five-time IPL champions have taken just 14 wickets in four matches in IPL 2026. There is not a single MI bowler among the top ten wicket-takers this season. On Sunday, RCB’s rampaging batters took them to the cleaners while putting up 240 for four. In previous matches too, teams have scored freely against them – Kolkata Knight Riders notched up 220 for four at the Wankhede Stadium in the opener, Delhi Capitals chased down 163 in 18.1 overs, while Rajasthan Royals raced away to 150/3 in just 11 overs. In the past, Trent Boult has been one of the IPL’s most successful bowlers in the powerplay overs, delivering blows with the new ball on a consistent basis and forming a lethal partnership with Bumrah. However, the seasoned New Zealand left-arm paceman, who has taken 146 wickets in 123 matches across 12 seasons, has looked a pale shadow of himself, having taken just one wicket in three matches@110.00, at an economy rate of 12.22. Mumbai captain Shardul Thakur has been MI’s top wicket-taker this season – five wickets in four matches@29.60 – but he has leaked runs at 13.45 per over. Highlighting this point of lack of support in MI for Bumrah, India’s off-spin great Ravichandran Ashwin said on his YouTube show, “It would be unfair to blame Bumrah for the lack of wickets. It’s a team game, and in T20 cricket, wickets come through sustained pressure. If you look at Krunal Pandya (1 for 26) and Suyash Sharma (2 for 47), they picked up wickets because there was pressure from Bhuvneshwar Kumar at the other end. Bumrah hasn’t had that kind of support.” Sherfane Rutherford, who smashed nine sixes in a 31-ball 71 not out while playing as an ‘Impact Player’ on his MI debut on Sunday, said at the post-match press conference on Sunday, “It’s definitely not a concern, to be honest. The opposition have batted well, and I think we need to give credit where it’s due. As I said, it’s just small margins for us-maybe a couple of field changes here or there-but I don’t think it has much to do with our bowlers. It’s more about executing better and continuing to improve.” After they suffered their third defeat in a row in IPL 2026, following their jinx-breaking win in the season opener against Kolkata Knight Riders, MI captain Hardik Pandya said, “I think in the last couple of games, as a bowling unit or even as a batting unit, we’ve been quite catching up in the game rather than leading the game. We really need to reflect, really need to see what best we can do and how we can get that momentum and that click which we require. We have a couple of days off from here and we will play again,” “Yeah, definitely not the best start, but as I said, it’s not how you start, it’s how you move forward. It’s about how we take the learnings. We need to go back to the drawing board, focus on the small margins, and come back stronger as a team. We’re a good side, and three games don’t make us a bad one. It’s a 14-game season, and there’s still a long way to go,” Rutherford said.On the eve of their big-ticket game against RCB, Mumbai Indians‘ batting coach Kieron Pollard had brushed aside concerns about Bumrah’s lack of wickets. “For us, it’s about coming together as one and getting the desired result at the end of the day. Otherwise, you start looking into different things and creating narratives that aren’t really there. For us, he’s fine: he’s fit, he’s firing. And for your sake, I hope he picks up five wickets tomorrow,” Pollard had said. That ‘tomorrow’ for MI’s sake, needs to come soon, before it’s too late.

Starmer says UK will not support US blockade of Strait of Hormuz | US-Israel war on Iran News

Other US allies criticise Trump’s move, including France, Spain and Turkiye, and China also condemns the plan.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer says his country will not join the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz announced by United States President Donald Trump, a move also criticised by other US allies.

“We are not supporting the blockade,” Starmer told BBC radio on Monday, adding that the United Kingdom “is not getting dragged in” to the US-Israel war on Iran.

Starmer said it was vital to get the strait reopened. In peacetime, about 20 percent of the world’s oil supplies pass through the strategic waterway that links the Gulf to the Indian Ocean.

“It is in my view vital that we get the strait open and fully open, and that’s where we’ve put all of our efforts in the last few weeks, and we’ll continue to do so,” he said.

Al Jazeera’s Rory Challands, reporting from London, said Starmer has continued to “maintain a delicate balancing act” of saying the UK will not be joining the war while being careful not to level any criticism directly at Trump regarding his actions in the war.

Traffic through the strait has been heavily restricted since the start of the war. Iran has allowed through only some vessels serving friendly countries, such as China.

Starmer made his statement as the US military announced it would block all maritime traffic entering and exiting Iranian ports starting from 14:00 GMT. It was unclear, however, how the US military would enforce the blockade.

“The blockade will be enforced impartially against vessels of all nations entering or departing Iranian ports and coastal areas, including all Iranian ports on the Arabian Gulf and Gulf of Oman,” the US military’s Central Command said.

US forces would not impede vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz to and from non-Iranian ports, it added.

In a lengthy social media post on Sunday, Trump said his goal was to clear the strait of mines and reopen it to all shipping and Iran must not be allowed to profit from controlling the waterway.

Meanwhile, French President Emmanuel Macron announced that France and the UK would hold a conference in the coming days aimed at restoring freedom of navigation in the strait.

Macron reiterated that no diplomatic effort be spared in reaching a lasting end to the US-Israel war on Iran.

Nicole Grajewski, assistant professor at the Center for International Research at the Paris Institute of Political Studies, said a US blockade was “not a minor coercive signal” but could rather be considered essentially a resumption of the war.

Other US allies also criticised Trump’s move, including Spanish Defence Minister Margarita Robles, who said the planned naval blockade “makes no sense”.

“It’s one more episode in this whole downward spiral into which we’ve been dragged,” she said.

Fellow NATO ally Turkiye said the Strait of Hormuz should open “as soon as possible”.

“Negotiations with Iran should be conducted, persuasion methods should be used and the strait should be opened as soon as possible,” Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan told the state-run Anadolu news agency.

China, Washington’s great power rival and a big importer of Iranian oil, also criticised the plan.

“The Strait of Hormuz is an important international trade route for goods and energy, and maintaining its security, stability and unimpeded flow is in the common interest of the international community,” Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesman Guo Jiakun said, urging Iran and the US not to reignite the war.

`Ngumoha has such special qualities`: Arne Slot

Arne Slot said Rio Ngumoha is ready to be thrown into any situation after scoring his first Anfield goal in a 2-0 win over Fulham on Saturday, which eased the rising pressure on the Liverpool boss.

The 17-year-old had already netted his first Premier League goal with a late winner away at Newcastle in Liverpool`s second game of the season. Despite a difficult campaign, Slot has largely resisted the clamour to rely on Ngumoha as a game-changer. But he has started three of Liverpool`s last eight games with Slot encouraged by his physical development and more end product.

That faith was rewarded as Ngumoha produced a sublime strike to become Liverpool`s youngest ever Premier League goalscorer at Anfield. Mohamed Salah then netted in his first home appearance since announcing he will leave at the end of the season as Liverpool snapped a three-game losing streak.

“He has such a special quality which you don`t see a lot in football anymore, dominating the one v one situation and that`s exactly what he did when he scored his goal,” said Slot on Ngumoha`s impact. “I`ve said a few weeks ago that his playing time will increase because he got stronger and stronger, showed more and more when he came in (to games), but also in training sessions. “That it wasn`t only a nice trick, but there was more and more end product to what he did.

“There was more and more power, which is needed if you play against the best defenders in the world and I don`t think anyone is surprised that, at this moment in time, he scored his first goal (at Anfield).”

Liverpool face a much stiffer test on Tuesday if they are to overcome a 2-0 first-leg deficit against holders Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League. Slot, though, believes Ngumoha is ready for that elite level, even if he is unsure whether the teenager will be fresh enough to start.

“I think he`s ready. The question, of course, is can he do this two days later again?” Slot added. “In the beginning of the season, he was a young player, getting some experience with the first team, but now he`s just someone I can pick for any game. So also the one on Tuesday.”
