The Income-Tax Department announced an extension for the deadline for filing belated or revised income tax returns for the fiscal year 2023-24 to 15th January 2025. Previously, the last date for resident individuals to make these submissions for assessment year (AY) 2024-25 was set at 31st December 2024. The department made this announcement in a post on X, “CBDT (Central Board of Direct Taxes) extends the last date for furnishing belated/revised return of income for AY 2024-25 in the case of resident individuals from December 31, 2024, to January 15, 2025.”
Vivek Jalan, a partner at Tax Connect Advisory Services LLP, clarified the significance of the extension. He stated that for the 2023-24 fiscal, the due date to make rectifications by resident taxpayers was December 31, which was the last date to file belated or revised ITRs. This has now been extended to January 15, giving some relaxation to these taxpayers to match with their books first and then file their belated/revised ITRs accordingly, he told news agency PTI. The move provides an additional two weeks for taxpayers to reconcile their financial records.

The countdown for 2025 has begun and the nation is gearing up for grand celebrations. Anticipating massive crowds across various cities, the police have made elaborate arrangements and are all set to keep a watch on people, especially on popular celebration spots.
Major cities across the country have introduced regulations to ensure safety and prevent untoward incidents on New Year’s Eve. To maintain law and order, a strict watch would also be kept on drink-driving.
RESTRICTIONS IN DELHI, WATCH ON DRINK-DRIVING
The Delhi Police have announced robust security arrangements for New Year’s Eve, and have deployed nearly 20,000 police and paramilitary personnel to maintain law and order. Deployments in the border areas of the national capital have also been increased, as many are expected to arrive in Delhi from adjoining states.
Restrictions shall be imposed from 8 pm onwards on Tuesday in the area of Connaught Place till the end of New Year celebrations. It will be applicable to all private and public transport vehicles.
According to the police, buses headed towards Connaught Place will be diverted, starting from 7 pm on December 31, and the exit gates of Rajiv Chowk Metro Station will be closed after 9 pm on December 31 to prevent overcrowding.
Sharing information about the deployment in the New Delhi district, Deputy Commissioner of Police (New Delhi) Devesh Kumar Mahla told news agency PTI, “Large crowds are expected to gather in various clubs, hotels, restaurants, pubs, malls, eating houses, and parks and special arrangements will be made for Connaught Place/Connaught Circus, Khan Market, five-star hotels, including The Lalit, Imperial, Park, Royal Plaza, Shangri-La, Le Meridien, Taj Mahal, Taj Vivanta, Metropolitan, Claridges, Ashoka, Samrat, ITC Maurya, and Taj Palace, India Gate, ‘C’ Hexagon and Kartavya Path, temples and gurudwaras.”
AMBULANCES, FIRE TENDERS, JAIL VANS ON STANDBY IN DELHI
Police said two ambulance vans, two fire tenders, two jail vans, two teams of bomb disposal squad, 28 door frame metal detectors, two teams of SWAT, three teams of Prakram vehicles, 33 MPVs, 30 motorcycle-patrolling teams, 43 foot-patrolling teams, 29 border pickets, 30 vehicle-checking parties at parking lots, seven plain-cloth spotters and five arrest parties will be deployed.
Doctors will be deployed to conduct medical examinations of people driving under the influence of alcohol. An excise inspector will be deployed to check violations of excise laws and prohibition regulations.
The DCP further said that searching/frisking of all individuals will be conducted, no person will be allowed to consume liquor in public places, adding people with valid invitation cards from hotels/restaurants will be allowed to proceed towards Connaught Place.
The DCP added 47 pickets have been erected for the diversion of other vehicles from the Connaught Place area.
A strict action shall be taken against drink-driving, overspeeding, stunt biking, reckless driving, zig-zag and dangerous driving, etc., he said.
The police have secured 35 key celebration venues for special security coverage, adding teams will monitor important spots like 15 malls, motels, cinema halls, and other popular places.
He added adequate security measures have been deployed at 21 bus stops to prevent untoward incidents, 60 motorcycle-patrolling staff have been deployed on critical roads, eight prominent hotels will get enhanced security, and security has been enhanced at the Hauz Khas village party hub.
He further said that seven ACPs, 38 inspectors, 329 sub-inspectors and assistant sub-inspectors, and 161 female personnel will be deployed at various locations. The deployment includes foot and vehicle patrols for heightened visibility and traffic management.
For traffic arrangements, Additional Commissioner of Police (traffic) DK Gupta said, “We have made elaborate traffic arrangements for the New Year celebrations. The focus will be on Connaught Place, near India Gate, Hauz Khas Market, Saket mall, Ambience Mall etc. We have distributed stickers for the vehicles entering Connaught Place after 8 pm. We have identified 10 spots at Connaught Place where people can’t go with their vehicles.”
“We have deployed staff at 14 points at the India Gate,” Gupta said, adding that restrictions will be imposed to prevent overcrowding in the area.
METRO RESTRICTIONS IN DELHI
To ensure public safety, commuters will not be allowed to exit from Rajiv Chowk metro station after 9 pm on New Year’s Eve, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) said on Monday.
However, the entry of passengers into the station will be allowed.
Additionally, from 8 pm onwards, QR tickets for Rajiv Chowk station will not be issued through DMRC’s mobile application to facilitate the smooth implementation of these measures.
Metro services on the rest of the network will operate as per the regular timetable.
CHECKS ON DRINK-DRIVING IN GURUGRAM
In Gurugram, more than 80 traffic police personnel will be deployed at various checkpoints to curb drink-driving on New Year’s Eve. According to PTI, special checkpoints (naakas) will be set up at eight key locations to ensure strict enforcement of anti-drink-driving measures, a senior police officer was quoted as saying.
The officer said during New Year celebrations incidents of drinking and driving increase. For public safety and smooth traffic operations, eight dedicated checkpoints will focus on drink-and-drive violations.
The deployment will include eight traffic inspectors, 16 zonal officers, eight road safety officers and 50 other personnel, he added.
DCPs across all zones have been instructed to set up additional checkpoints in their respective areas to ensure peaceful and safe celebrations, Traffic Deputy Commissioner of Police Virender Vij said.
Action will be taken under the Motor Vehicle Act against everyone caught driving under the influence of alcohol, Vij said.
SECURITY ARRANGEMENTS IN KOLKATA
On December 31, the Metro Railway Kolkata will strengthen security arrangements with special teams posted at Park Street station, close to the hub of celebrations, and several other stations along the Blue Line (Dakshineswar-New Garia corridor) and round-the-clock CCTV monitoring at the central control room.
Six special trains will be operated three each on the UP and DN lines after 9.40 pm on New Year’s Eve.
Anticipating rush at Esplanade, Park Street, Maidan, Rabindra Sadan, Dum Dum and Dakshineswar Metro stations, well-trained RPF personnel will be deployed at all entry and exit gates on New Year’s Eve, a Metro Railway statement told PTI.
Another special team consisting of one officer and four staff will be deployed at the Park Street Metro station.
An adequate number of Railway Protection Force (RPF) staff will be deployed at Park Street, Maidan and Esplanade Metro stations to provide proper guidance to the commuters.
Anti-sabotage checking will also be stepped up at these stations.
Several women RPF officers and staff will be deployed at Park Street station to ensure the safety and security of women and children. One special team consisting of a sub-inspector/assistant sub-inspector and four staff including two women will be present at Park Street, Maidan and Esplanade Metro stations.
To monitor real-time developments, adequate staff will be posted at the central control room of North-South Metro, with regular CCTV monitoring to ensure the safety and security of passengers.
The statement said six additional services (three on UP and DN lines each) will be run at night on New Year’s Eve for the benefit of the commuters on the Blue Line.
Of these six services, the trains from Dakshineswar for Kavi Subhash (New Garia) will be available at 9.48 pm, 10.03 pm and 10.18 pm. From Kavi Subhash trains will leave for Dakshineswar at 9.55 pm, 10.10 pm and 10.25 pm.
These special Metro services on the occasion will be available at an interval of 15 minutes.
METRO TIMINGS CHANGED IN HYDERABAD
As the police administration across all the major cities is taking significant steps to ensure safety and security during the New Year celebrations, the timings of Hyderabad Metro trains have been extended.
To facilitate the New Year celebrations and to ensure safe travel for commuters, Hyderabad Metro Rail will operate extended hours on New Year’s Eve.
Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited, MD, NVS Reddy stated that the last train will leave from all terminal stations at 12.30 am and reach their respective endpoints by about 1.15 am on January 1, 2025, providing safe and convenient late-night connectivity for passengers.
Additionally, a free ride will be made available to tipplers to help them return home safely after New Year celebrations on December 31, the New Indian Express reported.
TRAFFIC RESTRICTIONS IN VISAKHAPATNAM
The Visakhapatnam Police have issued traffic regulations for all residents on New Year’s Eve. According to the city police, “The flyover bridge from Vemana Mandiram to DLO Junction will remain closed for both vehicles and pedestrians from 8.00 pm on December 31 to 5.00 am on January 1, 2025, for public safety.”
As per the traffic regulations, “On January 1, devotees bringing their vehicles for pooja at the Sampath Vinayaka Temple must park on the left side of the road from Goti Sons to Kalamandir in a single line, without obstructing traffic. Similarly, vehicles should park in a single line on the right side of the road from the GVMC Commissioner’s Bungalow to Vemana Mandiram. Vehicle poojas in front of the temple will not be permitted.”
The regulations further state that no vehicular movement or parking will be allowed on this stretch from 8.00 pm on December 31 to 5.00 am on January 1, 2025.
“From 8:00 pm to 5:00 am, the middle lane of the BRTS Road will be closed from Hanumanthawaka to Adavivaram Junction, Goshala Junction to Vepagunta Junction, and Pendurthi Junction to NAD Junction via Convent Junction. Emergency vehicles can use the service roads on either side. For safety, the middle lane from Maddilapalem Junction to Rama Talkies and the underpass near RTC Complex will also be closed from 10:00 pm to 5:00 am,” according to the regulations.
Beach visitors have also been instructed to park their vehicles in designated parking areas and walk to the beach.
4,000 COPS DEPLOYED ACROSS SURAT IN GUJARAT
As Surat prepares to ring in the New Year, the city is taking significant steps to ensure safety and security during the celebrations. DCP Hetal Patel announced that more than 4,000 police personnel will be deployed throughout the city to manage crowds and maintain law and order on December 31.
Speaking to the media, DCP Patel highlighted the enthusiasm among the youth for the upcoming celebrations and emphasised the comprehensive security measures in place.
“There is a lot of enthusiasm among the youth about December 31, for which a lot of preparations have been done by Surat Municipal Corporation. More than 4,000 police personnel will be deployed on the roads,” she said.
Patel also pointed out that these preparations have been underway for the last week, with the authorities focusing on vehicle checking and surveillance.
NAVI MUMBAI POLICE GEAR UP
As the countdown for the New Year celebration has begun, Navi Mumbai Police were also gearing up to ensure that the festivities go on peacefully without any untoward incidents.
Milind Bharambe, Commissioner of Police, Navi Mumbai was quoted by news agency ANI as saying that police personnel will be deployed to ensure the safety of every citizen and also urged the people to remain responsible during celebrations in adherence to laws and regulations.
Additionally, officers will be deployed in civil dress to keep a check on drug consumption in major areas of the city.
RESTRICTIONS IN BENGALURU
Given the New Year celebrations, Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara said on Monday that thousands of police personnel have been deployed and all necessary preparations have been made to ensure that no untoward incidents happen in Bengaluru City and the entire state.
He also appealed to the public not to get involved in any untoward incidents.
Meanwhile, speaking to PTI videos, Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar said that more than 1,000 cameras have been installed across the city by all the departments and warned that no nuisance will be tolerated.
Elaborate arrangements have been made by the Bengaluru Police for the upcoming New Year celebrations in the city, with tight security deployment in areas with heavy footfall to ensure public safety and the smooth flow of traffic.
A total of 11,830 police personnel, including senior officers along with civil defence staff and others, will be maintaining strict vigilance across the city, monitoring any potential rave parties and drug-related activities.

Police in New York City have named the woman who was set on fire and burned to death on a subway train in Brooklyn.
Authorities on Tuesday identified Debrina Kawam, 61, of New Jersey as the victim of the seemingly random 22 December attack that burned her body beyond recognition.
Sebastian Zapeta, 33, is accused of starting the blaze with a lighter while Ms Kawam was asleep. He allegedly fanned the flames with a shirt and then watched the fire grow from a bench outside the subway car.
Last week, a grand jury indicted Mr Zapeta, who claims to have no memory of the incident, on four counts of murder and one count of arson.
It took authorities more than a week to fully identify the body.
Eric Gonzalez, the Brooklyn district attorney, said at a press conference early in the investigation that authorities had worked to collect DNA evidence and fingerprints from Ms Kawam’s remains.
“It’s a priority for me, for my office, for the police department to identify this woman, so we can notify her family,” Mr Gonzalez said.
False and unverified information about her, including a fake AI-generated picture, circulated online as authorities worked.
There was also an outpouring of support, including a vigil held for the then-unidentified victim last week.
Police say that Ms Kawam was motionless, apparently asleep, on a stationary subway train at the Coney Island-Stillwell Avenue Station in Brooklyn early on 22 December when Mr Zapeta allegedly approached her with a lighter.
The pair never interacted, and police believe they did not know each other.
Video appears to show the suspect waving a shirt at her in an apparent effort to fan the flames, rather than douse them. He then exits the subway car and watches the blaze from a bench on the platform.
Jessica Tisch, New York police commissioner, said that the smell of smoke drew police officers and Metropolitian Transit Authority personnel to the fire where they extinguished the flames.
“Unbeknownst to the officers who responded, the suspect had stayed on the scene and was seated on a bench on the platform just outside the train car,” Ms Tisch said.
Authorities declared Ms Kawam dead at the scene.
Ms Tisch described the incident as “one of the most depraved crimes one person could possibly commit against another human being”.
In a preliminary hearing on Tuesday, prosecutor Ari Rottenberg said Mr Zapeta told investigators that he had been drinking and did not remember the incident, but did identify himself in photos and surveillance video showing the fire being lit.
Mr Zapeta, who is originally from Guatemala, was deported from the US in 2018 and later re-entered the country illegally, immigration authorities said.
He is due back in court on 7 January, prosecutors said.

Zurich: A flight attendant aboard a Swiss aircraft that made an emergency landing in Austria due to smoke in the cabin has died, the airline said Tuesday. The flight from Bucharest to Zurich on December 23 diverted to Graz after engine problems and smoke filled the cockpit and the cabin, Swiss said in a statement.
It said the attendant died Monday in intensive care in the hospital in Graz. The attendant was one of two crew members who were hospitalised. All 74 passengers aboard the Airbus A220-300 were evacuated after flight LX1885 landed safely, Swiss said.
“We are devastated at our dear colleague’s death,” Swiss CEO Jens Fehlinger said in the statement. “His loss has left us all in the deepest shock and grief. Our thoughts are with his family, whose pain we cannot imagine. I offer them my heartfelt condolences on behalf of all of us at Swiss.” Swiss is a subsidiary of German airline Lufthansa.
The public prosecutor’s office in Graz has ordered a forensic examination of the attendant’s body, Austria’s APA news agency reported. It has also appointed an aviation expert and initiated an investigation into the cause of the accident.

‘Sorry’ For Ethenic Conflict Manipur CM’s Year-End Message; Urges All To ‘Start Afresh’
Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh on Tuesday apologised for the ethnic conflict in the state which claimed over 250 lives and rendered thousands homeless and appealed to all communities to forget and forgive past mistakes and start afresh.
Addressing reporters here, Singh said that there has been relative peace in the state in the last three-four months, which gives him hope that normalcy will be restored in the new year.
“I want to say sorry for what happened in the state. Many people lost their loved ones and many had to leave their homes. I regret and want to apologise. But after seeing relative peace in the last 3-4 months, I hope that normalcy will be restored in the coming year.

A United States military appeals court has denied an effort by Pentagon chief Lloyd Austin to throw out possible plea deals for the alleged mastermind of the attacks on September 11, 2001, and his two co-conspirators.
The deals could see the three men — Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, Walid bin Attash and Mustafa al-Hawsawi — plead guilty to the attacks, which killed nearly 3,000 people. In exchange, they would be spared the possibility of the death penalty.
A plea hearing for Mohammed, who is accused of orchestrating the killings, is set for next week.
The New York Times and Associated Press both reported on Monday night that the military appeals court had ruled against Austin.
The decision upheld a previous judgement from a military judge, Colonel Matthew McCall, who ruled that Austin lacked the standing to throw out the plea bargains following their initial approval.
News of the possible plea deals emerged several months ago. They signalled a possible off-ramp for a case long complicated by the use of torture on prisoners swept up during the so-called “global war on terror”, launched by the US in the wake of the September 11 attacks.
Legal experts have said that the use of torture — dubbed “enhanced interrogation” by the administration of former President George W Bush — could prolong or prevent a conviction.
For instance, revelations that Majid Khan, a former al-Qaeda courier, had been tortured at a Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) black site prompted public outcry. The CIA denied the allegations, but Khan’s lawyers described him suffering sexual abuse, starvation and waterboarding.
In 2021, a military jury, composed of eight officers, sentenced Khan to 26 years in prison, the shortest sentence possible. But seven of the eight members on the panel urged the government to offer clemency, given the nature of Khan’s torture.
Like Khan and other September 11 defendants, Mohammed and the two other defendants are being tried by a special military commission set up under World War II-era laws that allow for the prosecution of foreign defendants outside of the US justice system.
While a Pentagon appointee had initially signed off on the plea deals, Austin sought to revoke the agreements in August amid pressure from lawmakers and family members of victims, who deemed the deals too lax.
Austin later said he believed Americans deserved the opportunity to see the trials through.
Defence lawyers, however, charged that Austin’s push to revoke the plea deals represented unlawful interference in the case.
Despite Monday’s decision, Austin can still appeal the case to the US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, which could cause further delays.
Years of hearings
Pre-trial hearings for the three men in the case and a fourth defendant, Ammar al-Baluchi, have stretched for more than a decade. Unlike his three co-defendants, al-Baluchi has not agreed to plea-deal negotiations.
All four of the accused have been held at the Guantanamo Bay detention centre in Cuba.
The military prison has become a lasting symbol of US abuses in the wake of the September 11 attacks, with dozens of detainees continuing to be held there without the rights guaranteed under US law.
The administration of US President Joe Biden had entered office hoping to close the facility for good, but it remains open as President-elect Donald Trump prepares to take office on January 20.
Once holding 800 detainees, the Guantanamo Bay facility housed approximately 40 people when Biden took office in 2021.
Several have since been transferred to second countries, including four in the last two weeks.
One of those includes Tunisian detainee Ridah bin Saleh al-Yazidi. On Monday, the Pentagon announced he had been repatriated to Tunisia.
Despite being approved for a transfer more than a decade ago, al-Yazidi was kept in the Guantanamo facility for years, as no agreement had previously been reached with Tunisia’s government.
Al-Yazidi, a suspected member of al-Qaeda, had never been charged after being detained in Pakistan near the Afghan border in 2001.
According to the Pentagon, 26 people remain incarcerated in the Guantanamo Bay centre. Of that group, 14 are eligible for a transfer.
The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has removed the user limit for onboarding on WhatsApp Pay, effective immediately. According to a statement from NPCI, WhatsApp Pay can now offer UPI services to its entire user base in India.

Previously, NPCI allowed WhatsApp Pay to increase its UPI user base in phases, with a cap of 100 million users. This restriction has now been lifted, enabling WhatsApp Pay to expand its services without limits.
WhatsApp Pay will continue to adhere to all existing UPI guidelines and circulars for Third-Party Application Providers (TPAPs), according to NPCI.
In 2020, NPCI imposed a user cap of one million on WhatsApp Pay, which was gradually raised to 100 million by 2022.
This cap has now been fully removed. The initial restrictions were put in place to ensure a smooth rollout and avoid overburdening the banking infrastructure. With the UPI ecosystem now more stable, NPCI has approved the removal of the cap, allowing WhatsApp Pay to expand its user base.
The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), established by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and the Indian Banks’ Association (IBA), serves as the umbrella organisation for retail payment and settlement systems in India. NPCI oversees the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) framework.
On Tuesday, the central government announced a two-year delay in implementing market share caps for UPI transactions, providing relief to major players like Google Pay and Walmart-backed PhonePe.
The proposal, introduced in November 2020, seeks to limit any digital payment firm’s market share to 30% of the total UPI transaction volume. Initially set to be enforced by the end of 2024, the deadline has now been extended to December 2026, according to an NPCI statement.
Currently, PhonePe and Google Pay dominate the UPI payment space in India. As of November 2024, PhonePe held a 47.8% share, while Google Pay accounted for 37%.
Together, they processed 13.1 billion transactions in the same month, regulatory data revealed. Other competitors include fintech platforms such as Paytm, Navi, Cred, and Amazon Pay.
