Shamir Tandon pays tribute to Asha Bhosle

As tributes continue to pour in from across the industry, music director Shamir Tandon has also reflected on the privilege of working with the legendary singer, whom he described as a mother figure in his life. In an interview with ANI, Tandon shared an emotional recollection of his journey with the legendary singer. The two first collaborated for the National Award-winning film, Page 3, in which Asha sang the popular song, Kitne Ajeeb Rishte.

He spoke about how Asha Bhosle once advised him to remain technology-forward— something she learned from her husband, the late composer RD Burman.

How Asha Bhosle embraced death in final years

Shamir Tandon poignantly touched upon how Asha told her she was ready for death as they collaborated on what was one of her final songs. “One of her last songs in Hindi has been done by me, which is written by my dear friend Prasoon Joshi. Uske bol hain: Jaane do, jaane do, khud se milna hai, jaane do (Let me go, let me go, I want to meet myself, let me go).” The composer said the veteran singer related to the lyrics a lot. “Woh kehti thi ki ab bass bahut ho gaya, ab mujhe bahut ache tarike se chale jana hai. Khud se milna jana hai. (She used to say that she now wishes to go away peacefully and find herself again,” he added.

Asha Bhosle dies

Born in 1933, Asha Bhosle began her musical journey at a young age and rose to prominence in the 1950s. Over a career spanning eight decades, she recorded over 11000 songs across multiple Indian languages, ranging from classical and ghazals to cabaret, pop, and folk. She was honoured as the most recorded artist in the world by the Guinness Book of World Records.

She was honoured with awards, including the Dadasaheb Phalke Award and the Padma Vibhushan, and also won two National Film Awards for Best Playback Singer.

Asha Bhosle breathed her last on Sunday. She was 92. Doctor Prateet Samdani of Breach Candy Hospital confirmed that the veteran singer had been dealing with multiple health issues and died due to organ failure.

Despite repeated requests from the umpire to hand it back, the Australian continued to toy with the ball for a few moments, leaving the official visibly miffed. After a brief delay, David finally returned the ball, bringing a smile back to the situation.Rohit Sharma also joined in, sharing a light-hearted moment with David as the incident drew laughter on the field.Earlier, RCB’s top order had dominated proceedings. Legendary singer Asha Bhosle shared a long-standing professional and personal bond with veteran actress Saira Banu, delivering memorable songs like Main Chali, Zindagi Ittefaq Hai, Tujhko Dekh Kar and Mohe Tirchhi Najariya Na Maro. Over the years, their association grew beyond cinema into a warm friendship.Recalling her early memories, Saira told News18, “I first met Asha ji at a recording. During those times, the live orchestra would be outside at a recording theatre and there would be a cubicle for the singer with a mic. Asha ji, Lata ji, Mohammed Rafi saab and Mukesh ji were such wonderful people that they would let us, actors, sit with them inside the cubicle. We got to witness so many live recordings.”

She added, “During her recordings, Asha ji mujhe ishaara bhi karti thi beech beech mein. Unhone mujhe pehle hi kaha tha ki woh apni awaaz mere liye baarik kar rahi hai. I was a newcomer at that time. I was very, very young and I joined the movies straight out of school. I was a very thin girl with a baarik awaaz. She would keep reminding me that she’s changing her voice through her ishaaras inside the recording studio. She was truly effervescent, lovely, naughty and happy-go-lucky.”

‘That was the last time I spoke to her’

Saira revealed that she had recently spoken to the singer, making the loss even more personal.“I recently spoke to her during the month of Ramzan. I had seen an interview of hers where she was speaking of Ramzan, Eid and fasting so lovingly. I was so surprised! She conveyed a beautiful message of unity, togetherness, love and affection among people. I was thrilled with the way she spoke. She always spoke so well. I called her to speak to her about it.”“That was the last time that I spoke to her, not realising that soon enough, she would be so unwell. It came as a surprise to me. I remember seeing a video of hers attending a function (hinting at Arjun Tendulkar’s wedding) and she looked terribly weak. That was the last time that I saw her. ‘We were like family’

Saira also spoke about the deep-rooted bond their families shared, especially through Lata Mangeshkar and her husband Dilip Kumar.“She and Lata ji have been family friends. We spent a lot of time together. Dilip saab and I shared some meaningful time with them. We are that old-fashioned, classical crowd. We loved sharing stories about life and music. And we loved talking about food. Asha ji was crazy about very good food! She has a restaurant too. I never had anything cooked by her but she and Lata ji would come for meals at our house. The last time they came home, Lata ji ne apne haathon se Dilip saab ko khaana khilaaya tha. I have photographs from that day.”

‘Each was a master of their craft’

Reflecting on the musical legacy of the Mangeshkar sisters, Saira emphasised their individuality.“Both of them truly changed the path of Indian film music by conforming to what was needed in those times. They sang according to the times and the demand of the people. Lata ji had a style of her own. There were certain kinds of songs that Lata ji wouldn’t sing. Those were taken over by the very versatile, Asha ji.”She added, “She sung the tracks featuring the dancing queen, Helen ji, such as Mehbooba Mehbooba and Yeh Mera Dil, very differently. They had varying styles and each was a master of their craft.”

‘The loss of a friend is terrible’

An emotional Saira concluded, “Oh, the loss of a friend is such a terrible thing to go through! It’s such a terrible thing to lose people that you love. It’s awful.”Asha Bhosle passed away at the age of 92 in Mumbai. She was admitted to Breach Candy Hospital on April 11 following multiple health complications and died due to multi-organ failure, marking the end of an era in Indian music.

Lalit Pandit’s association with Asha Bhosle can be traced back to his childhood days. He recalled, “We have a very old relationship with the Mangeshkar family. Hridaynathji had told me that she used to learn music from his father. And Asha ji used to say my siblings and I all used to come to her house. And I have sung songs with Asha ji in my childhood in films like ‘Parichay’ and ‘Apna Desh.’ We used to sing the chorus section in many films.”He continued, “Asha ji had told me once that I was so short that she used to hold my hand to help me stand on the table to reach the mic.”See More: Asha Bhosle Passes Away Updates

Lalit Pandit’s last call to Asha Bhosle

“I called her a few weeks ago. I came to know that she was not well. She picked up the phone herself, and it was a very long conversation,” said Lalit Pandit, recalling his last call with Asha Bhosle.“I told her, I want to meet you; you are not well. It had been a year since I met her. The last time I saw her was at Shanmukhananda Hall, where she performed. We did not meet again after that,” he added.

Further in the conversation, he shared, “We used to sing Asha ji’s songs at every function. She was our family. And the happiest thing for us is that she used to come to the music room to rehearse every song. We used to keep the whole day free for her rehearsal because she used to sit and chat; she was a very lively lady. She was a very young-hearted lady.”“Asha ji has left. I hope that Asha ji’s blessings will always be on us. And on our family. And the love and guidance that I have received from her. I will be indebted to her for the rest of my life,” he concluded.

In the IPL 2026 match against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), Mumbai Indians (MI) skipper Hardik Pandya has won the toss and elected to bowl first at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

The “Paltan” will enter the clash with two changes, where Mayank Markande and Mitchell Santner will come in place of Deepak Chahar and Allah Ghazanfar, respectively.

After winning the toss, MI`s skipper Pandya said, “We’re going to bowl first. Looks like a good track. We played the first game on the other pitch, this looks similar. It’s always good to bat second here. I think it’s a big game. Just want to come out and play our best cricket, do the things we’ve spoken about in the meetings, and just enjoy the sport. We requested good wickets and we’ve been getting them. As long as you land the ball right as a bowler and play the right shots as a batter, you’re in the game. Over the years at Wankhede, chasing has worked for a lot of teams. Being our home ground, dew comes in later as well. So it’s good to know what you’re chasing, you can plan your innings accordingly. On the other hand, Josh Hazlewood will make way for Jacob Duffy in the Royal Challengers` team.

RCB`s captain Rajat Patidar said, “Obviously would have bowled first. But as you all know, it’s a good batting track. The ball comes nicely onto the bat with good bounce. So honestly, it won’t make too much difference. We’ll try to put a good total on the board and keep them under pressure. This is our fourth game. The way we’ve played the last few matches, there are a lot of positives. In the last match, we were 97 for 6 and still managed to score over 200. That’s a positive sign for us. We enjoy it a lot here. Whenever we come, we see great crowds. It’s challenging, but at the same time, fun and exciting. Just one change, Duffy comes in place of Hazlewood”.

Hardik Pandya did not shy away from admitting that Mumbai Indians are searching for answers after another setback, saying the team will “explore options” following their defeat to Royal Challengers Bengaluru at the Wankhede Stadium.

Chasing a daunting 241, Mumbai once again found themselves playing catch-up from the outset. The early loss of momentum in the powerplay, combined with wickets at regular intervals, left them with too much to do in the latter half of the innings.

Reflecting on the performance, Hardik pointed to issues across both departments. “We lost too many wickets and at the same point of time, I think we conceded way too many runs as well. That was always going to be catch-up,” he said.

That theme of chasing the game has been a recurring one. Hardik admitted that Mumbai have struggled to take control early, whether with bat or ball. “In the last couple of games, as a bowling unit or even as a batting unit, we’ve been catching up rather than leading the game,” he said.

RCB’s imposing total of 240 exposed those issues once again. Mumbai’s bowlers were unable to contain the scoring through the middle overs, while their batting never found the sustained acceleration required in a chase of that magnitude.

Hardik stressed that a reset is now necessary. “We really need to reflect, really need to see what best we can do and how we can get that momentum and that click which we require,” he said, adding that the team will reassess both batting and bowling combinations ahead of their next fixture.

“There are a lot of options which will be asked and explored. To be very honest, now a lot of things need to be rethought. Definitely, it’s not working,” he said.

A key concern remains the powerplay, where Mumbai have consistently lagged behind the opposition. “We are kind of trying to catch up in the powerplay in both batting and bowling,” Hardik noted, underlining the need to start stronger.

One positive for Mumbai came in the form of Sherfane Rutherford, whose late onslaught provided some resistance. Hardik acknowledged his impact, saying Rutherford’s power gives the team “extra cushion” and flexibility going forward.

Despite the loss, the message from the Mumbai camp is clear. Changes are on the horizon as they look to find momentum and regain control of their campaign.
