Could the next Pope come from Africa or Asia? , world News

In the shadow of the huge columns that surround St. Peter’s Square, Nancy Samai sells tickets to visitors to the Vatican Museums. A Roman Catholic, Ms. Samai arrived in Italy 22 years ago after fleeing civil war in her native Sierra Leone. As she works, she can look out the same window from which Pope Francis welcomes pilgrims on Sundays. Like many of them, she wonders if one day the face looking out that window might be black. She says, “If Barack Obama can become president in America, then surely the next Pope can be African.” “This is my dream. “This is what I am praying for.”

Similar thoughts may come to the minds of the 21 bishops whom Pope Francis will appoint as cardinals on December 8. Those under the age of 80 when he dies or retires will still be eligible to participate in the conclave, the assembly that selects the next pope. Francis has used his power of nomination to shift the geographic balance that, until recently, overwhelmingly favored the rich world, especially Italy. At the last conference in 2013, Europeans and North Americans cast 64% of the votes. In the election held immediately after the Consistory, they would have 52%.

The Pope now performs most of his duties from a wheelchair. But this is due to a defect in the right knee and not any life-threatening disease. In September Francis began his longest trip abroad to date, flying more than 30,000 km to visit Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, East Timor and Singapore. Yet, at the age of 87, the punitive demands of the Holy See will become increasingly burdensome and, as time goes on, the temptation to hand over power to a younger, more fit man will certainly increase.

As an Argentine, Francis is the first non-European to lead the church since 741 AD, when Gregory III, a Syrian, ended his rule. Now that the Church has broken with the structure that it held intact for nearly 13 centuries, there is inevitably speculation that its successor might come from Africa or Asia. Ghana’s Peter Turkson was widely nominated for the papacy at the last conclave, but his star has since waned.

According to the Vatican, the two continents accounted for 31% of the global Catholic population of about 1.4 billion at the end of 2022. But these figures underestimate the importance of continents because they do not include China, where there are perhaps an additional 12 million Catholics.

Furthermore, they record the number of baptized Catholics considered alive, but take no account of those who have since abandoned their faith: in Europe and North America, which nominally includes those around the world. The flock, comprising 27%, is disillusioned with secularization and clericalism. Abuse scandals have led large numbers of Catholics to renounce their faith or allegiance to Rome. The same is increasingly true of South and Central America, which accounts for 41% of the total. However, this is not true for Africa, the continent where the Catholic flock is growing fastest: between 2013 and 2022, it increased by 22% (see chart). The number of Catholics in Asia (except China) increased by 13% over the same period.

Of course, there is no scientific way to measure the intensity of collective faith. But some broadly drawn measures show that Africa is also where faith is strongest. The first is the level of adherence. In 2023, researchers at Georgetown University in Washington looked at mass attendance in 36 countries. Although only two Africans were included, they were ranked first and second: 94% of Catholics in Nigeria and 76% in Kenya said they went to mass at least once a week. The second measure, at least for men, is the number of people studying for the priesthood. Vatican figures show that in the ten years to the end of 2022, the number decreased on every continent except Africa, where it increased by 24%. Bigard Memorial Seminary in Enugu, Nigeria is considered the world’s largest training school for Catholic priests, with over 700 seminarians.

Other powerful arguments also strengthen the African pontiff’s case. But formidable obstacles also arise. The first, usually discussed in sotto voce, is “protecting”, a term that people in and around the Vatican prefer to “sexual abuse”. There are fears that the scandals that have already rocked the Church in Europe, North America and parts of South and Central America could begin to erupt in Africa during the next Pope’s tenure.

This is not the only such risk. On a continent where a man without a woman often faces social rejection, some priests take on a female partner early in their careers and sometimes even father children, only to be promoted. To abandon both partner and children. A pontiff whose elevation it was discovered that he was following that path would be a cause of great embarrassment to the Church.

All other factors relate to the character and structure of the next conference. After the upcoming union, there will be 140 so-called cardinal-electors. Of these, all but 30 would have been appointed by the ruling Pope, who has mostly favored similarly broad-minded men. African cardinals may be too conservative for them, although some will undoubtedly appeal to the more traditionalist cardinals in America’s deeply divided Catholic Church. In the 1990s, Pope St. John Paul II privately complained that African bishops were too reticent in dealing with him. Francis is unlikely to share that view: the two biggest challenges to his authority have come from African cardinals.

Robert Sara of Guinea, whom Francis had put in charge of the Vatican department that administers liturgy, mounted the first challenge. One of the most visible changes introduced by the reformed Second Vatican Council in the 1960s was requiring priests and bishops to speak at mass facing their congregations. But in 2016 Cardinal Sara told him he should return to the old practice of turning his back. Six days later, the Pope rebuked him and the Vatican issued a statement claiming his words had been “misinterpreted”.

The second rebellion was more broad-based and forced Francis to make a terrible U-turn. Last year, the Vatican’s chief theologian published a document authorizing the blessing of gay couples unless it was done as part of a religious ritual, let alone a gay marriage. This document caused an uproar in Africa. The head of the continent’s bishops, Congolese Cardinal Fridolin Ambongo Besungu, went to Rome and threatened Francis into supporting the opt-out for Africa. It was a rare, if not unprecedented, declaration that a sector of the hypothetically universal Church need not follow the Vatican’s guidance on a specific issue.

Another reason to doubt that the next Pope will come from Africa arises from Francis’s policy of choosing cardinals from unlikely places, often in countries where other religions are dominant, to show that his Church has a No part has been forgotten. He has provided the scarlet biretta, the four-pointed hat of cardinals, to the bishops of Ulaanbaatar in Mongolia, Ekwulobia in Nigeria, Huehuetenango in Guatemala, Tonga and Stockholm.

“The result is that at the next conclave very few cardinals will know each other – or who to vote for,” says Andrea Gagliarducci, an independent Vatican analyst. One Cardinal they all know is Pietro Parolin, the most senior Vatican official. In November bookmakers gave him the best odds to succeed Francis. But many view Cardinal Parolin with more fear than affection, and the unique character of the next conclave could also mean that a little-known cardinal with a magnetic personality could emerge as a serious candidate. Some cardinal-electors in Africa fall into that category. But there is one exception: Cristóbal López Romero, a cheerful, bearded Spaniard and member of the Salesian order who is archbishop of Rabat in Morocco. Like Francis, the second-generation son of Italian immigrants, Cardinal Lopez Romero, the white cardinal of an African archdiocese, has the advantage of strong ties to both the poor and the rich world. He lived in Latin America for more than 20 years.

Pope for the best

The final consideration is that although cardinal-electors do not always vote for papal candidates from their own neighbourhood, Africa’s representation at the next conclave will not reflect Africa’s importance. The continent’s Catholics number one-fifth of the total. Nevertheless, after the formation of the Union, Africa will have only 18 cardinal-electors able to cast 13% of the votes. In sharp contrast, Asia, where Catholics are barely half the number, will soon have a dominance of 18%. Largely because of Francis’ appointments, Latin America is likely to have a greater say in who becomes the next pope. A Vatican official said, “It seems as if he was pointing us in that direction.”

Until recently, the speculators’ favorite was Luis Antonio Tagle, a much-favored cardinal from the Philippines who headed the Vatican department responsible for most of the poor. But his prospects were damaged in 2022 when Francis removed him as president of Caritas Internationalis, the Catholic Church’s global charity, along with the organization’s entire leadership. The Vatican cited “failures of management and processes, seriously affecting team spirit and staff morale”.

Asia, like Africa, is a growth region for the Catholic Church. In Georgetown University’s mass attendance rankings, Lebanon (69%) and the Philippines (56%) rank third and fourth. Although the number of Asian candidates for the priesthood declined by 9% from 2013 to 2022, it was less than the steep 31% decline in Europe.

So could any surprises emerge from the east? The name sometimes mentioned is that of Cardinal Lazarus Yoo Heung-sik of South Korea, head of the Vatican’s department for the clergy. Like many Asian Catholics, he was baptized late, at age 16. Said to be theologically mainstream but active in denouncing social injustice and political authoritarianism, Cardinal Yu’s profile is not dissimilar to that of the late Pope, St. John Paul II, who stood for. A Catholic religion with some ifs and buts. Kim Whanyoung, a Korean writer on religion, says that the Cardinal has all the characteristics of the residents of his native region of Chungcheong: “They are kind and respectful, and when faced with disputes they often do not reveal what they are thinking. ” These would be useful qualities for any Pope.

‘Canal is Panamanian’: Panama’s president rejects Trump threats | Donald Trump News

Jose Raul Mulino rejects prospect of talks with Donald Trump, who threatened US could retake control of Panama Canal.

The Panamanian president has rejected threats by US President-elect Donald Trump that the United States could reassert control over the Panama Canal, saying “there’s nothing to talk about.”

President Jose Raul Mulino on Thursday also rejected the possibility of reducing canal tolls for US vessels and denied that China had any influence over the vital waterway connecting the Atlantic and Pacific oceans.

“If there is an intention to talk, then there’s nothing to talk about,” Mulino said during a weekly news conference.

“The canal is Panamanian and belongs to Panamanians. There’s no possibility of opening any kind of conversation around this reality, which has cost the country blood, sweat and tears.”

The president’s comments come days after Trump, who takes office next month, threatened to take back control of the Panama Canal over what he said were “ridiculous” fees being charged by the Panamanian authorities.

The US exerted administrative control of the canal for decades before handing it to Panama in 1999.

In a series of social media posts over the past week, Trump accused the Central American country, with whom Washington has had diplomatic relations since 1903, of “ripping off” the US on the Panama Canal.

“Our Navy and Commerce have been treated in a very unfair and injudicious way,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform on Saturday.

“The fees being charged by Panama are ridiculous, especially knowing the extraordinary generosity that has been bestowed to Panama by the US. This complete ‘rip-off’ of our Country will immediately stop.”

Trump also claimed that Chinese soldiers were “lovingly, but illegally, operating the Panama Canal”.

That claim was rejected on Thursday by the Panamanian president, who said China has no role in the administration of the canal.

“There are no Chinese soldiers in the canal for the love of God, the world is free to visit the canal,” Mulino told reporters.

China does not control or administer the canal, but a subsidiary of Hong Kong-based CK Hutchison Holdings has long managed two ports located on the canal’s Caribbean and Pacific entrances.

Meanwhile, Trump on Wednesday named Miami-Dade County Commissioner Kevin Marino Cabrera as his envoy to Panama.

Describing Cabrera as “a fierce fighter for America First principles”, Trump said in a social media post that he “will do a FANTASTIC job representing our Nation’s interests in Panama!”

Earlier this week, dozens of demonstrators gathered outside the US embassy in Panama City in anger over Trump’s Panama Canal comments.

The protesters chanted “Trump, animal, leave the canal alone!” and burned a picture of the incoming US president.

The Nigerian wristwatch repairer lost in time in Kaduna

The Nigerian wristwatch repairer lost in time in Kaduna

Ticking is the predominant sound inside Bala Muhammad’s tiny watch-repair shop, tucked away on a bustling street in the northern Nigerian city of Kaduna.

It is like a time capsule from a different era with numerous clocks hanging on the wall and small tables at the entrance full of his tools and watches in various states of repair.

His shop is on one of Kaduna’s busiest shopping streets – sandwiched between building material suppliers.

Until a few years ago, he had a steady stream of customers dropping by to get their watches fixed or get a new battery fitted.

“There were times I get more than 100 wristwatch-repair jobs in a day,” the 68-year-old, popularly known as Baba Bala, told the BBC.

But he worries that his skills – taught to him and his brother by their father – will die out.

“Some days there are zero customers,” he says, blaming people using their mobile phones to check the time for the decline in his trade.

“Phones and technology have taken away the only job I know and it makes me very sad.”

But for more than 50 years, the boom in watches allowed the family to make a good living.

“I built my house and educated my children all from the proceeds of wristwatch repairing,” he says.

His father would travel all over West Africa for six months at a time – from Senegal to Sierra Leone – fixing timepieces.

At one stage Baba Bala was based in the capital, Abuja, where many of the country’s elite live – and he made a good living tending to the watches of the wealthy.

He reckons his best customers were top officials of the state-owned oil firm Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC).

Some had Rolexes – these can vary wildly in price but an average one costs around $10,000 (£8,000).

He says they are beautiful – and encapsulate his love for all watches from Switzerland. He himself owns a Longines, another prestigious Swiss brand, which he only removes when he sleeps.

“If I step out of my house and I forgot it, I have to go back for it. I will not be without it – that is how important it is to me.”

At his shop, he keeps a beautiful big framed photo of his father, Abdullahi Bala Isah, taken as he looked up from his work bench a few years before his death in 1988.

Baba Bala’s father, who died in 1988, was a renowned horologist who travelled across West Africa fixing watches

Isah was a renowned horologist and his contacts in Freetown and Dakar would call him to take a trip when they had enough watches for him to tend to.

He would also make regular visits to Ibadan, a metropolis in the south-west of Nigeria – a literary hub and home to the country’s first university.

Baba Bala says no-one in the family knows where his father learnt his expertise – but it would have been at the time of British colonial rule.

He himself was born four years before Nigeria’s independence in 1960.

“My father was a popular wristwatch repairer and his skill took him to many places. He taught me when I was young and I am proud to have followed his footsteps.”

Baba Bala started taking a close interest in understanding the intricacies of what the wheels and levers inside a watch do when he was 10 – and was delighted to discover that as he got older it became a good source of pocket money.

“When my fellow students were broke in secondary school, I had money to spend at the time because I was already repairing wristwatches.”

He remembers his skill even impressed one of his teachers: “He had issues with some of his wristwatches and had taken them to several places and they couldn’t do them. When he was told about me I was able to fix all three of the watches by next day.”

At one point, watches were seen as important as clothes in Nigeria and many people felt lost without one.

Some customers left their watches for repair years ago and have never returned

Kaduna used to have a dedicated area where many watch-sellers and repairers set up their businesses.

“The place has been demolished and is now empty,” say Baba Bala mournfully, adding that most of his colleagues are either dead or have given up on the business.

One of those who admitted defeat was Isa Sani.

“Going to my repair shop daily meant sitting down and getting no work – that’s why I decided to stop going in 2019,” the 65-year-old told the BBC.

“I have land and my children help me to farm on it – that is how I am able to get by these days.”

He laments: “I don’t think wristwatches will ever make a comeback.”

The youngsters working at the building supply shops next to Baba Bala agree.

Faisal Abdulkarim and Yusuf Yusha’u, both aged 18, have never owned watches as they have never seen a need for them.

“I can check the time on my phone whenever I want to and it’s always with me,” one said.

Dr Umar Abdulmajid, a communications lecturer at Yusuf Maitama University in Kano, believes things may change.

“Conventional wristwatches are no doubt dying and with it jobs like wristwatch repairs too, but with the smartwatch I think they could make a comeback.

“The fact a smartwatch can do much more than just show you the time means it could continue to attract people.”

He suggests old watch-repairers learn how to grapple with this new technology: “If you don’t move with the times you get left behind.”

But Baba Bala, who returned from Abuja to Kaduna to set up his shop about 20 years ago as he wanted to be nearer his growing family, says this does not interest him.

“This is what I love doing, I consider myself a doctor for sick wristwatches – plus I am not getting any younger.”

Baba Bala spends most of his time at the shop listening to the news on his radio

His tight-knit family remain loyal to his profession – his wife and all his five children wear watches and often pop in to visit him at the shop, where some of the timepieces on display are forgotten relics from old customers.

“Some brought them many years ago and didn’t return for them,” he says.

But Baba Bala refuses to give up and still opens up daily – his eldest daughter, who runs a successful clothes boutique nearby, helps him with bills when his business is slow.

Without much to keep him busy – or the chatter and gossip of his customers, Baba Bala says he now often listens to his radio for company, enjoying the Hausa language programmes on the BBC World Service.

In the afternoon his youngest son, Al-Ameen, comes to visit after school – the only one of his children to show an interest in learning the art of watch-repairing. But he would not encourage him to take it up as a profession.

He is pleased that the 12-year-old has told him he wants to be a pilot – continuing the family tradition of seeing more of the world.

In a cockpit, he would be faced with many watch-like dials – not unlike his dad’s workshop.

'Scope for credit growth to outpace economy,' says RBI

MUMBAI: There is scope for bank credit to outpace growth of the economy given the relatively low share of credit to GDP, according to RBI.
“India’s total credit-to-GDP ratio (including credit extended by banks as well as NBFCs) at 90.1% in 2022 was below that of advanced economies and of emerging market economies (EMEs) as well as the estimated threshold (of 113.1%). As such, higher credit growth remains supportive of economic growth,” RBI said in its report on Trend and Progress of Banking in India. The report includes a cross-country analysis of credit-to-GDP ratio, concluding that higher credit growth in India remains supportive of economic growth. A separate analysis on deposits has concluded that income growth has a significant positive impact on bank deposits.

Israel kills five medical staff as another baby freezes to death in Gaza | News

Doctor, lab technician and two maintenance workers among those killed as a fourth baby in three days dies of cold during Israel’s genocide.

Israel’s genocide has killed five staff members at one of northern Gaza’s last functioning hospitals, the facility’s director says, as yet another baby freezes to death in the besieged and bombed Palestinian enclave.

Hussam Abu Safia, head of Kamal Adwan Hospital in Beit Lahiya, on Thursday said the “martyrs included a doctor.”

Al Jazeera’s Hind Khoudary, reporting from central Gaza, said a laboratory technician and two maintenance workers were among those killed in the attack.

“We know that the hospital is one of the only medical facilities still operating, and it is working with the bare minimum human resources and a lack of medical supplies,” she said.

“Israeli forces have been attacking the surroundings of Kamal Adwan Hospital, sending quadcopters inside the hospital and shooting Palestinians.”

The hospital has been rendered nonoperational after weeks of near-daily attacks. Israeli forces previously killed the director of the hospital’s ICU, Dr Ahmed al-Kahlout, and wounded dozens of medical staff in attacks on and near the facility.

Khoudary said Palestinian rescue workers have been unable to reach the bodies of those killed at the hospital. “People are unable to bury those Palestinians who are being killed every single day by the Israeli forces in northern Gaza,” she added.

Israel launched a large-scale ground offensive in northern Gaza on October 5, saying it aimed to prevent the Palestinian group Hamas from regrouping.

Since then, no sufficient humanitarian aid, including food, medicine and fuel, has been allowed into the area, leaving the remaining population on the verge of famine.

The World Health Organization has described conditions at Kamal Adwan Hospital as “appalling” and said it was operating at a “minimum” level.

Another baby freezes to death

Meanwhile, a fourth infant has died due to extreme cold within 72 hours in Gaza, the Wafa news agency reported on Thursday.

Medical sources said the baby died due to a drop in temperature as the humanitarian conditions across the enclave are dire.

“The tents do not protect from the cold, and it gets very cold at night with no way to keep warm,” said Dr Ahmed al-Farra, the chief paediatric doctor at Nasser Hospital in southern Gaza’s Khan Younis area.

In more than a year of Israeli attacks and lack of aid deliveries, many families in Gaza have been left without adequate shelter and resources to cope with the changing weather.

Local health officials told Wafa a lack of food among mothers was contributing to a rise in health issues among children, further straining medical facilities and emergency services.

Israel’s bombardment and ground invasion of Gaza has killed more than 45,300 Palestinians, more than half of them women and children. The offensive has also caused widespread destruction and displaced about 90 percent of Gaza’s 2.3 million residents, often multiple times.

Hundreds of thousands of people are packed into tent camps along the coast as the cold, wet winter sets in. Aid groups have struggled to deliver food and supplies and said there are shortages of blankets, warm clothing and firewood.

Head of WHO Tedros at Yemen airport during Israeli air strikes

The head of the World Health Organization (WHO) and other UN staff were at Yemen’s international airport in Sanaa on Thursday during an Israeli air strike.

In a social media post, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said he and staff were about to board a plane when the airport came under aerial bombardment.

“One of our plane’s crew members was injured,” he wrote, adding that two people at the airport were killed.

The strikes – which also hit power stations and ports – have killed at least three people with more than a dozen injured, according to Houthi-run media. The Iran-backed rebel group described the attacks as “barbaric” after Israel claimed responsibility for the strikes.

It is unclear whether the fatalities were civilians or Houthi rebels.

In a statement, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said its “fighter jets conducted intelligence-based strikes on military targets belonging to the Houthi terrorist regime on the western coast and inland Yemen”.

It targeted “military infrastructure” at Sanaa International Airport as well as the Hezyaz and Ras Kanatib power stations, and sites in the Al-Hudaydah, Salif and Ras Kanatib ports on the west coast, the IDF said.

In comments shortly after the strikes, Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said it would “continue to cut off the terror arm of the Iranian axis of evil until we complete the job”, adding “we are only just starting with [the Houthis]”.

Mohammed Ali al-Houthi, head of the Houthis’ supreme revolutionary committee, called the strikes “barbaric” and “aggressive”.

He said that “confrontations with American and Israeli arrogance” will continue until the conflict in Gaza stops.

Several people injured by the strikes at the airport in Sanaa told Houthi-run broadcaster Al Masirah that the runway was struck three times before the airport’s control tower was also hit.

One man, who identified himself as Dr Abbas Rajeh, said the police hospital he works in treated 10 patients after the attacks – one had already died, another was in critical condition, and others had minor injuries or broken bones.

Iran described the strikes as a “clear violation of international peace and security”.

Houthi rebels have been attacking Israel since the first months of the Gaza war, which began in October 2023.

A Houthi missile strike injured more than a dozen people in Israel last week.

Israel has carried out intermittent strikes against Houthis in retaliation.

Earlier this week, Israel’s defence minister said the country was preparing to “strike hard” at the Houthis, warning it would “decapitate” the group’s leadership.

The Houthis are an armed political and religious group backed by Iran. The group has ruled large parts of western Yemen, including the capital Sanaa, since ousting the internationally recognised government in 2015.
