The roads of Kerala have become a killing ground. And those who survive these accidents are either crippled or traumatized for life.

According to State Crime Records Bureau data, around 4,000 people lose their lives and hundreds are injured on Kerala roads every year.

Recently, six students of Government Medical College, Alappuzha met a tragic end when their car collided with a Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) bus at Kalarcode, Alappuzha on the rainy night of December 2.

The car, which was carrying 11 first-year MBBS students, collided with the bus when they were on their way to watch a movie in Alappuzha city. If the figures maintained by the State Crime Records Bureau are any indication, Kerala’s roads are becoming death traps.

Till October this year, 3,168 people died in 40,821 road accidents in Kerala. The number of deaths in 48,091 accidents in 2023 was 4,080, while in 2022, 4,317 people died in 43,910 accidents.

The number of accidents and deaths witnessed a decline in 2021 and 2020 with 3,429 and 2,979 deaths respectively due to the COVID-19-induced lockdown. However, 4,303 deaths occurred in 40,181 accidents in 2018 and 4,440 people lost their lives in 41,111 accidents in 2019.

Adani, under bribery scrutiny, pressed by Bangladesh to reopen power deal

Bangladesh‘s interim government has accused energy supplier Adani Power of breaching a multi-billion-dollar agreement by withholding tax benefits that a power plant central to the deal received from New Delhi, according to documents seen by Reuters.
In 2017, the Indian company controlled by billionaire Gautam Adani signed an agreement with Bangladesh to provide power from its coal-fired plant in eastern India. Dhaka has said it hopes to renegotiate the deal, which was awarded by then-Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina without a tender process and costs Bangladesh far more than its other coal power deals, according to Bangladesh power agency documents and letters between the two parties reviewed by Reuters, as well as interviews with six Bangladesh officials.
Dhaka has been behind on payments to Adani Power since supply started in July 2023. It owes several hundred million dollars for energy that has already been supplied, though the two sides dispute the exact size of the bill.

The news agency is also revealing details about Bangladesh’s plan to reopen the 25-year deal, and that it hopes to use the fallout from U.S. prosecutors’ November indictment of Adani and seven other executives for their alleged role in a $265 million bribery scheme to press for a resolution.
Adani Power has not been accused of wrongdoing in Bangladesh. A company spokesperson said in response to Reuters’ questions that it had upheld all contractual obligations and had no indication Dhaka was reviewing the contract. The company did not answer questions about the tax benefits and other issues raised by Bangladesh.

TAX EXEMPTIONS
Adani Power’s Godda plant runs off imported coal and was built to serve Bangladesh.
The company said the Bangladesh deal helped further Indian foreign policy objectives and Delhi in 2019 declared the plant part of a special economic zone. It enjoys incentives such as exemptions on income tax and other levies.
The power supplier was required to inform Bangladesh swiftly of changes in the plant’s tax status and to pass on the “benefit of a tax exemption” from India’s government, according to the contract and implementation agreement signed on Nov. 5, 2017 between Adani Power and the state-run Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB).
But Adani Power did not do so, according to letters sent by BPDB on Sept. 17, 2024 and Oct. 22, 2024 that urged it to remit the benefits.
The agreements and letters are not public but were seen by Reuters.
Two BPDB officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorised to talk to the media, said they did not receive responses.
BPDB estimates savings of roughly 0.35 cents per unit of power if the benefit was passed on, the officials said. The Godda plant supplied 8.16 billion units in the year to June 30, 2024, according to an undated Bangladesh government summary of power purchases seen by Reuters, suggesting potential savings of about $28.6 million.
Power minister Khan said the savings would be a key part of future discussions with Adani Power.
‘NEGOTIATED HASTILY’
Bangladesh in November scrapped a 2010 law that allowed Hasina to award some energy deals without a competitive bidding process.
The absence of tenders is unusual, said Tim Buckley, director of Australia’s Climate Energy Finance think-tank, adding that auctions ensure “the best price possible.”
In September, Yunus’s government appointed a panel of experts to examine major energy deals signed by Hasina. A Bangladesh court has separately ordered a probe of the Adani deal.
Another panel asked to study the economy said in a white paper submitted to Yunus on Dec. 1 that the U.S. charges against Adani meant Bangladesh should “scrutinise” the power deal, which it described as “negotiated hastily.”
Hasina, who has not been seen in public since she fled to India, could not be reached. Her son and adviser Sajeeb Wazed told Reuters he was not aware of the Adani Power deal but that he was “sure there was no corruption.”
“I can only assume the Indian government lobbied for this deal so it was made,” he said in response to allegations of political interference.
Modi’s office and other Indian officials did not respond to requests for comment.
HARDBALL
On Oct. 31, Adani Power halved the power supply from Godda in response to the payment dispute with Bangladesh.
The company in a July 1 letter seen by Reuters also rejected a request from BPDB to extend a discount it had offered until May – resulting in savings of about $13 million for Bangladesh. It said it would not consider further discounts until payment was cleared.
Adani Power contends it is owed $900 million, while BPDB says arrears are about $650 million. Bangladesh suffers from a dollar shortage and BPBD officials told Reuters they haven’t been able to obtain sufficient foreign currency for payment.
The halving of supply particularly angered Bangladesh, BPDB Chair Md. Rezaul Karim said, because it came after Dhaka in October remitted $97 million to Adani Power – its highest monthly payment this year.
The dispute revolves around how power tariffs are calculated, with the 2017 agreement pricing off an average of two indices.
The unit cost of energy from Godda was 55% above the average of all Indian power sold to Dhaka, according to the summary of Bangladesh’s power purchases.
Bangladesh is pressing for Adani Power to use other benchmarks that would lower the tariff after one of the indices was revised last year, said three BPDB sources.
Adani Power has rejected that, one of them said, adding the two sides were meeting soon.
The agreements stipulate that arbitration be carried out in Singapore, but Khan said Bangladesh’s next move depended on the outcome of the court-ordered investigation.
“If it is proven that bribery or irregularities had happened, then we will have to follow the court order if any cancellation happens,” he said.

Lee cited the example of Canada where sales of EVs crashed when the incentives on EVs were removed. He, however, said the situation in India is different as most of the current premium EV customers are multiple car owners and they can afford high priced vehicles.

“So EV (customers in India) are very different from other countries. They can choose the EV car without that kind of incentive, if they like,” Lee noted. When asked about sales outlook for 2025, he said Kia India is looking at an annual sales of around 3 lakh units, up from 2.55 lakh units expected this year.

He also said India remains one of the most promising markets for Kia globally and the country is still the fastest growing economy in the world promising a lot for carmakers. “The growth of the economy of 6 per cent is not bad… This is good… India is still going up, because the economy is growing… It means new customers and new households are able to afford to buy new cars,” Lee noted.

The company’s new offering Syros, which will start deliveries from February, is expected to further accelerate growth in the SUV segment, where Kia India is a significant player.

In the compact and mid-SUV segment, along with MPVs (multipurpose vehicles) combined segment which is around 18 lakh units, the company is looking to increase its market share to 20 per cent in 2025 from 15 per cent, Kia India Senior Vice President, Sales and Marketing, Hardeep Singh Brar said.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has said Russia should have launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine earlier and been better prepared for the war.

In his end-of-year press conference on Thursday, Putin said with hindsight there should have been “systemic preparation” for the 2022 invasion, which he refers to as a “special military operation”.

Russia seized Crimea from Ukraine in 2014 and pro-Russian forces began a conflict in eastern Ukraine, but it was eight years later that Putin tried to seize Kyiv.

During his four-hour long appearance, Putin also talked about Syria’s deposed leader, Russia’s more aggressive nuclear doctrine as well as domestic issues.

Billed as “Results of the Year with Vladimir Putin”, the event was broadcast live across the main state TV channels on Thursday.

Putin appeared in front of a large blue screen emblazoned with a map of the Russian Federation, complete with annexed parts of Ukraine.

He took questions from members of the public, foreign journalists and pensioners – but it was a highly choreographed and tightly controlled affair.

When asked at the end by the BBC’s Moscow correspondent Steve Rosenberg whether he felt the country was in a better state than where his predecessor, Boris Yeltsin, had left it 25 years ago, Putin said Russia had regained its “sovereignty”.

“With everything that was happening to Russia before that, we were heading towards a complete, total loss of our sovereignty.”

Asked about the fall of the Assad regime in Syria, Putin insisted it was not a defeat for the Kremlin – which supported President Bashar al-Assad militarily for years – but he admitted the situation was “complicated”.

He said he had not yet spoken to ousted Syrian leader, who fled to Moscow as rebel forces closed in on Damascus earlier this month, but planned to do so soon.

He added that Russia was in talks with Syria’s new rulers to retain two strategically important military bases on the Mediterranean coast and that Moscow would consider using them for humanitarian purposes.

On US President-elect Donald Trump, Putin said the pair had not spoken in four years, but he was ready to meet him “if he wants it”.

When put to him he was in a weak position compared to Trump, who is set to take office in January, Putin quoted American writer Mark Twain: “The rumours of my death are much exaggerated,” prompting a smattering of laughs in the conference hall.

Moving on to China, Putin said Russia’s relations with its eastern neighbour had reached an all-time high and the two countries were coordinating actions on the world stage.

“In the last decade, the level and quality of our [Russia-China] relations have reached a point that has never existed throughout our entire history, ” he said.

A lengthy portion of the session was focused on the war in Ukraine, with Putin saying he was “open to compromises” to end the war – although it was unclear what such compromises could entail.

Russian forces are making progress on the frontlines “everyday”, he said, describing his troops as “heroes”.

At one point, he produced a signed flag he said was given to him by Russian marines who were “fighting for the motherland” in the Kursk region, and ushered two observers to hold it behind him for the cameras.

He also talked up Russia’s construction projects in areas it has seized from Ukraine, claiming the standard of roads in the Ukrainian region of Luhansk had greatly improved since it was seized by Russia-backed forces in 2014.

When asked by an audience member if the West had “received the message” on Russia’s change to its nuclear doctrine, which Putin pushed through in November, he said “you’ll have to ask them.”

The new nuclear doctrine allows Russia to conduct a nuclear strike on any country, if it is backed by a nuclear power.

That means if Ukraine were to launch a large attack on Russia with conventional missiles, drones or aircraft, that could meet the criteria for a nuclear response, as could an attack on Belarus or any critical threat to Russia’s sovereignty.

Putin also emphasised the capabilities of Russia’s new intermediate-range ballistic missile, Oreshnik, which was used in a strike on Ukraine in November.

In order to test its power, he suggested Russia should fire the Oreshnik towards Ukraine, and Ukrainian air defence – using US-supplied systems – should try to bring it down.

As for the name “Oreshnik”? “Honestly,” Putin said with a smirk, “No idea. No clue.”

A dominant theme throughout the event was “Russian sovereignty”, with Putin claiming that less reliance on international partners – partly a result of Western sanctions – was one of the key achievements of his invasion of Ukraine.

He said the economy was “stable”, pointing to higher growth than countries like Germany, but admitted inflation of 9.1% was “alarming”.

In fact, the economy is overheating and highly reliant on military production – sometimes termed the “military industrial complex”.

Throughout the address, Putin also answered questions on domestic issues – from telephone scammers to young people’s struggles with getting a mortgage.

The order includes 31 single-engine aircraft from Piper Aircraft of the United States and three twin-engine aircraft from Diamond Aircraft of Austria.

Air India has placed an order for 34 trainer aircraft for its cadet pilots at the Flight Training Organisation (FTO), which is set to commence operations in Maharashtra’s Amravati by the second half of 2025, pending regulatory approvals, the airline announced on Thursday.

The order includes 31 single-engine aircraft from Piper Aircraft of the United States and three twin-engine aircraft from Diamond Aircraft of Austria.

“The FTO, that will be South Asia’s largest, is a leap forward in Air India’s commitment to bolster its training infrastructure as part of its Vihaan.AI transformation program and cultivate a pipeline of pilots as it expands its fleet, becoming self-reliant,” the airline said in a statement.

The training school will come up at Amravati’s Belora airport and will target to graduate 180 commercial pilots every year.

The trainer aircraft, which are due for delivery starting 2025, are equipped with glass cockpits, G1000 avionics systems and Jet A1 engines that will ensure advanced training for aspiring pilots.

“The new FTO in Amravati is a strategic move to exponentially expand our training infrastructure and our commitment to building a self-reliant ecosystem of qualified pilots for both Air India and the Indian aviation industry,” Sunil Bhaskaran, director of Aviation Academy of Air India, said.

“With this order, we are delighted to be playing a part in building the aviation infrastructure India needs as one of the world’s fastest-growing aviation markets and to support the government’s vision for an Atmanirbhar Bharat,” he added.

At the Amravati FTO, Air India is also developing a training institute spanning 10 acres, which will have digitally enabled classrooms, hostels, a digitised operations centre, and its own maintenance facility to elevate operational efficiency.
