Haiti gang kills 110 people leader accused of witchcraft
At least 110 mostly elderly people have been brutally murdered by gang members in the Haitian capital, Port-au-Prince, according to a human rights group.
The National Human Rights Defence Network (RNDDH) said a local gang leader had targeted them after his son fell ill and subsequently died.
The gang leader reportedly consulted a voodoo priest who blamed elderly locals practising “witchcraft” for the boy’s mystery illness.
The United Nations said the number of people killed in Haiti so far this year in spiralling gang violence had reached “a staggering 5,000”.

While details from the massacre are still emerging, the UN’s human rights chief Volker Türk on Monday put the number of people killed over the weekend “in violence orchestrated by the leader of a powerful gang” at 184.
The killings happened in the Cité Soleil neighbourhood of the capital.
According to reports, gang members seized scores of residents aged over 60 from their homes in the Wharf Jérémie area, rounded them up and then shot or stabbed them to death with knives and machetes.
Residents reported seeing mutilated bodies being burned in the streets.
RNDDH estimated 60 were killed on Friday while another 50 were rounded up and murdered on Saturday, after the gang leader’s son had died of his illness.
While RNDDH said that all the victims were over 60, another rights group said some younger people who had tried to protect the elderly had also been killed.
Local media said that elderly people believed to be practitioners of voodoo had been singled out because the gang leader had been told his son’s illness had been caused by them.
Rights groups said the man who had ordered the killings was Monel Felix, also known as Mikano.
Mikano is known to control Wharf Jérémie, a strategic area in the port of the capital.
According to Romain Le Cour Grandmaison, a Haiti expert at the Global Initiative against Transnational Crime (GI-TOC), the area is small but hard for the security forces to penetrate.
Local media said that residents had been prevented from leaving Wharf Jérémie by Mikano’s gang, so news of the deadly killings was slow to spread.
The group forms part of the Viv Ansanm gang alliance, which controls much of the Haitian capital.
Haiti has been engulfed in a wave of gang violence since the assassination in 2021 of the then-president, Jovenel Moïse.
Data gathered by GI-TOC shows there was a decline in the murder rate between May and September of this year, after rival gangs had reached an uneasy truce.
But attempts by the gangs to expand their territory beyond their strongholds in the capital have led to particularly bloody incidents in the past two months, with ordinary residents rather than rival gang members being increasingly targeted.
On 3 October, 115 locals were killed in the small town of Pont-Sondé in the Artibonite department.
That massacre was reportedly carried out by the Gran Grif gang in retaliation for some residents joining a vigilante group to resist attempts by Gran Grif to extort locals.
If confirmed, the death toll given by the UN for this weekend’s killings in Cité Soleil, would make it the deadliest incident so far this year.
With gangs in control of an estimated 85% of Port-au-Prince and increasingly large swathes of the countryside, hundreds of thousands of Haitians have been forced to flee their homes.
According to the International Organization for Migration, more than 700,000 people – half of them children – are internally displaced across the country.
Gang members often use sexual abuse, including gang rape, to sow terror among the local population.
In a report published two weeks ago, Human Rights Watch researcher Nathalye Cotrino wrote that “the rule of law in Haiti is so broken that members of criminal groups rape girls of women without fearing any consequences”.
Attempts by the Kenyan-led Multinational Security Support Mission to quell the violence have so far failed.
The international police force arrived in Haiti in June to bolster the Haitian National Police but is underfunded and lacks the necessary equipment to take on the heavily armed gangs.
Meanwhile, the Transitional Presidential Council (TPC) – the body created to organise elections and re-establish democratic order – appears to be in turmoil.
The TPC replaced the interim prime minister last month and seems to have made little progress towards organising elections.
“They reign over a mountain of ashes,” GI-TOC’s Romain Le Cour Grandmaison writes of the council in his report.

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, emphasized the growing participation of women in the insurance industry at the launch of LIC’s transformative ‘Bima Sakhi Yojana’, in Panipat, Haryana on Monday. “Since 2017-18, the recruitment of women agents has also been undertaken. In 2017, there were 6 lakh women agents, which increased to 7.45 lakh agents by 2023,” she said.
The ‘Bima Sakhi Yojana,’ also referred to as a women career agent initiative, aims to recruit 25,000 women as Bima Sakhis in its initial phase. The program is designed to provide financial and professional opportunities for women, particularly those from underprivileged backgrounds.
Sitharaman said, “The Bima Sakhi Programme, which the Prime Minister is set to launch today, is also referred to as a women career agent programme. Under this initiative, 25,000 women will be appointed as Bima Sakhis.” She added, “Women who have completed their 10th grade will be recruited as agents under LIC recruitment, titled “Mahila Bima Sakhi,” and they will also receive a stipend.”
To participate in the initiative, women aged between 18 and 70 years who have completed their 10th-grade education are eligible to apply. She stated, “Each Bima Sakhi will earn a monthly stipend of Rs7,000 in the first year, Rs6,000 per month in the second year, and Rs5,000 per month in the third year.”
She added, “This stipend serves as a basic support allowance. Additionally, women agents can earn commissions based on the insurance policies they secure, with their earnings increasing in proportion to the business they bring in.” In addition to the stipend, Bima Sakhis will earn commissions based on the insurance policies they secure. This creates an opportunity for women to significantly increase their income based on their performance.
After three years, participants can continue their careers as lifelong agents with LIC, offering a sustainable and rewarding career path. Announcing an ambitious three-year plan, Sitharaman stated that the program aims to recruit 2 lakh Bima Sakhis by 2026.
“The aim is to recruit 2 lakh Bima Sakhis over the next three years. Women aged 18 to 70 years can apply for this program. Even after three years, women can continue their association as lifelong career agents in the program,” she remarked.

The Prime Minister of Poland, Donald Tusk, is a well-known Europhile. But it was shocking to many in the EU that he suspended the right to asylum in their own country, setting aside his own principles. Tusk was a man who championed European values for years, and now he is undermining one of their cornerstones to save his own skin. Cynically, they justified their decision by saying that Russia and Belarus were sending asylum seekers towards their country and other EU member states, an allegation still unproven. But his critics say his real concerns lie much closer to home. His pro-EU Civic Platform coalition may have lost in Poland’s parliamentary elections last year, but it has been flailing ever since. Polls now show Tusk’s party in a tight race with the Eurosceptic Law and Justice party (PiS).
Tusk is not alone. Struggling Europhile leaders across the continent are suddenly discovering the political utility of “securing national borders.” Take, for example, Germany’s embattled Chancellor Olaf Scholz. His popularity is decreasing rapidly. Recently, Scholz imposed border controls on all of Germany’s land borders, citing an Islamic terrorist attack in Solingen as the trigger. But let’s call it what it is: a calculated move to appease voters fed up with migration and fend off rising populist parties like the AfD in the run-up to the February elections.
Double standards
Then there is Brussels itself – the sacred guardian of European unity, democracy and human rights. It has taken a remarkable U-turn on migration. Recently, after one of its signature closed-door meetings, the European Commission threw its weight behind Tusk. In a statement backed by all 27 member states, Brussels claimed that Russia and Belarus are “abusing our values” and “undermining our democracy”. It justified its stance by saying that “exceptional situations require appropriate measures”.
Apparently, the EU has decided that border controls are acceptable as long as the justification is wrapped in anti-Russian rhetoric and presented by the right kind of leader. To understand the EU’s hypocrisy, let’s remind ourselves what it did to Viktor Orban’s Hungary – Orban became the ‘bad boy’ of Europe for supporting Russia. Recently, the EU’s top court fined Hungary €200m for failing to comply with the union’s asylum policies. The court will also impose a fine of €1m per day unless the court changes its policy. The European Court of Justice said Budapest is violating the 2020 ruling and violating EU laws by forcing asylum seekers to travel to Belgrade or Kiev to apply for a travel permit to enter Hungary. .
It is impossible to ignore these double standards. When Poland’s PiS government first cracked down on migration, Brussels immediately condemned it as a betrayal of European values. But now that Tusk is doing the same, suddenly, the EU is completely in agreement with it.
France is facing distrust of the people
President Macron and the so-called political class of France are facing public distrust. A recent Le Monde survey paints a grim picture: only 22% of French people trust their MPs – a decline of seven points in just a year. Voters are fed up with the endless political bickering. And who can blame them? With confidence in the system eroded, new parliamentary elections next summer seem unlikely to magically deliver a stable majority.
The timing couldn’t be worse. The war in Ukraine is at a potential tipping point, and across the Atlantic, a new Trump administration looms, eager to start a trade war that could jolt Europe’s fragile economy. For now, Macron still has the reins – at least on paper. But he will have to convince France’s allies that the country is not going to completely disintegrate. With domestic impasse and a global crisis looming, it’s up to them to prove that France can still play ball on the world stage. The question is, does anyone still believe he can accomplish it?
Ukraine obsession: a crisis of priorities
The EU is pouring billions of dollars into Ukraine in the name of standing up to Russian aggression – defense aid, financial packages, reconstruction pledges – everything. But its own citizens are burdened with rising costs. Energy bills are skyrocketing, inflation continues to rise and wages remain stagnant. Let’s be clear, I live and travel in the center of Europe and I feel this: the EU’s continued commitment to Ukraine is not only draining its coffers, but also harming its people.
The Biden administration, once the puppet master, has drawn the EU deeper into the Ukrainian quagmire. Washington’s strategy is clear: Keep Europe committed to Ukraine as a front-line bulwark against Russia. But what did Europe gain? Endless sanctions that did more damage to its own economies than Moscow’s, and a cold winter of discontent fueled by overdependence on expensive trans-Atlantic LNG imports. Meanwhile, as I said in my previous column, Russia, though battered, is not broken. Its economy is thriving and its regional hold in eastern Ukraine remains strong.
A strange dance with Trump and Musk
Europe’s love affair with American technology and political elites has turned surprisingly sour. The triumphant return of Donald Trump and his friendship with Elon Musk could spell trouble for the EU’s ambitious tech action.
Let’s talk about X, Musk’s digital playground and its clash with the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA). This is not just another slap on the wrist regulation. Passed in 2022, the DSA packed a punch, demanding platforms to remove illegal content or face fines up to 6% of their annual revenue. Musk’s Ax is on the radar of EU regulators, who have accused him of multiple violations of DSA rules. Now, they’re considering their next move – fine X, slap Musk with a penalty, or go ahead with both. But that was before Trump came into play. Now that he is, the EU’s tech campaign is about to get a lot messier.
Digital dinosaurs in a world of tech titans
One of the EU’s biggest problems is that it is not disintegrating – it has become badly stagnant. Former Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi sounded the alarm in September. In his highly anticipated 328-page report, Draghi left no stone unturned: “This is an existential challenge,” he said. Europe needs to increase its annual investment to €800 billion to keep pace with the US and China. Without it, the continent risks turning into dust.
Seattle-based Indian-origin technology expert S. Aamir Arfi says Europe needs to act fast, as it currently lags behind all the top players. He says, “Silicon Valley is innovating rapidly, China is dominating AI and 5G, and even India is emerging as a tech superpower. Unfortunately, Europe is stuck with rules and bureaucracy , which is dangerously close to stagnation and irrelevance.”
“Consider the cold, hard facts,” says Arfi, “America dominates Big Tech and is home to giants like Apple, Google, and Microsoft. China has its own state-backed giants—Tencent, Alibaba and Huawei. But Europe? This is what SAP claims only. Draghi says only four of the world’s top 50 tech companies are European. He doesn’t mince words: “Europe largely missed out on the Internet-led digital revolution and the productivity gains it brought.”
The EU seems to be spending more time on regulation than innovation. Its core Digital Services and Markets Act is more about policing foreign technology than promoting local development. Meanwhile, European startups are largely struggling due to red tape and a lack of venture capital. Europe is in dilemma over morality, while its brightest minds head to Silicon Valley or Shenzhen.
Draghi’s diagnosis is clear: Europe is not just falling behind – it is failing to show up. If it doesn’t act boldly and invest massively, it risks becoming a digital backwater, sidelined in future-defining industries. As Arfi says, “Europe needs a technological revolution and it needs it now.”
The biggest threat to the EU comes not from Moscow or Beijing but from within. Populist and nationalist movements are growing from a toxic mix of economic anxiety, cultural insecurity and distrust of Brussels. Caught in the trap of good intentions but poor implementation, the EU risks becoming irrelevant – not through dramatic collapse, but through slow, self-inflicted collapse.

President-elect Donald Trump said he plans to end birthright citizenship in the United States in an interview with NBC’s Kristen Welker on a Meet the Press episode that aired on Sunday, reiterating a position he has articulated earlier too.
Were Trump to try to execute that plan once he takes office, it would involve undoing how the US has treated citizenship for more than 150 years.
But can Trump end birthright citizenship in the US, and what happens if he does?
What did Trump say?
When Welker asked Trump whether he still plans to end birthright citizenship on day one in office, Trump replied: “Yeah, absolutely.”
Birthright citizenship essentially means that anyone born in the US automatically becomes a US citizen, which includes children of undocumented immigrants or tourists and students on short-term visas.
He said he was willing to work with Democrats to keep “Dreamers”, who are undocumented people who arrived in the US as children and have lived in the country most of their lives.
However, Trump also said: “I don’t want to be breaking up families, so the only way you don’t break up the family is you keep them together and you have to send them all back.” That would mean expelling legal US citizens — ostensibly so that their families are not separated.
What does the 14th Amendment say?
The 14th Amendment of the US Constitution is the bedrock of the country’s approach to citizenship. It guarantees birthright citizenship. The amendment was ratified in 1868.
The first section of the amendment says: “All persons born or naturalised in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside.”
This is regardless of “their parent’s immigration or citizenship status,” according to the website of the American Immigration Council, a Washington, DC-based nonprofit and advocacy group.
Can Trump end birthright citizenship?
Welker brought up the 14th Amendment during her conversation with Trump, asking him whether he can get around the law.
“Well we’re going to have to get a change,” Trump responded.
“But we have to end it.”
Trump said if he can, he will change it through executive action, among other options which he did not specify.
Trump has been talking about wanting to end birthright citizenship since his first term in office. In a 2018 interview with Axios, he said: “You can definitely do it with an act of Congress … but now they’re saying I can do it just with an executive order.”
For years, legal experts and politicians, including some from the Republican Party, have cast doubt on Trump’s claims.
“You cannot end birthright citizenship with an executive order,” former Republican House Speaker Paul Ryan said in a radio interview in 2018. “I think in this case the 14th Amendment is pretty clear, and that would involve a very, very lengthy constitutional process.”
Amending the US Constitution is a difficult process. It requires two-thirds of the vote in both the House and the Senate. The amendment then needs to be ratified by three-fourths of the state legislatures. In the Senate, Democrats hold 47 seats and the Republicans hold 53. In the House, Democrats hold 215 seats, while Republicans hold 220.
What implications could this have?
A 2011 factsheet by the American Immigration Council says eliminating birthright citizenship will affect everyone. All American parents would have to go through an arduous and expensive process of proving their children’s citizenship.
“Our birth certificates are proof of our citizenship. If birthright citizenship were eliminated, US citizens could no longer use their birth certificates as proof of citizenship,” the factsheet says.
Research by Washington, DC-based nonpartisan think tank Migration Policy Institute and Pennsylvania State University projected that ending birthright citizenship for US children with two unauthorised immigrant parents would increase the existing “unauthorised population” by 4.7 million people by 2050. The findings of this research were published in 2010.
Do other countries have birthright citizenship?
While Trump claimed in the NBC interview that the US is “the only country that has” birthright citizenship, more than 30 other countries follow this approach.
Those are Antigua and Barbuda, Argentina, Barbados, Belize, Bolivia, Brazil, Canada, Chad, Chile, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Grenada, Guatemala, Guyana, Honduras, Jamaica, Lesotho, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Tanzania, Trinidad and Tobago, Tuvalu, Uruguay and Venezuela.
What are other kinds of citizenship?
Many countries have more than one way in which they grant citizenship. Besides birthright citizenship, other kinds of citizenship that countries have include:
Citizenship by descent: This is when one or both parents need to be citizens of a country for the child to be considered a citizen. Most countries offer citizenship by descent. Being born within the territory of the country is not a requirement to obtain citizenship by descent. Some countries have specific criteria for granting citizenship by descent. For example, in Bahrain and Iran, the father has to be a citizen for the child to be considered a citizen.
Citizenship through naturalisation: This is when a foreign-born resident of a country can obtain citizenship after spending a certain period there and fulfilling a set of criteria that usually involve, in effect, proving that they have assimilated into that culture. Different countries have different criteria for naturalisation. The US offers this type of citizenship too.
Citizenship through marriage: A foreign-born person can obtain citizenship of a country if they are married to a citizen of that country. In the US, people can apply for citizenship through marriage three years after marriage to a US citizen, and after obtaining a permanent residence permit, or green card. Regular residents have to wait until five years after obtaining the green card to apply for citizenship. The United Kingdom and Germany are among other countries that offer citizenship by marriage.
Dual citizenship: This is when a person can hold citizenship in two countries. At least 87 countries allow dual citizenship with the US, according to World Population Review.
Citizenship by investment: Some countries allow foreign-born residents to obtain citizenship by making an investment in the country, such as by buying property. In Turkiye, foreign nationals must buy property worth at least $400,000 to acquire citizenship. The US does not have this option. Citizenship can also be acquired by investment in other countries, including Malta, as well as Antigua and Barbuda.

Four new cement plants will be built for an additional capacity of 6 million tonnes per annum along with the world’s biggest integrated green energy ecosystem
The Adani Group may invest more than ₹7.5 trillion ($88.53 billion) into renewable energy and cement in Rajasthan, news agency Reuters reported, citing Karan Adani, managing director of Adani Ports.

More than 50% of these investments will be made over the next five years, the report quoted Karan Adani as having said while speaking at an investment summit in the state.
As part of the investments, four new cement plants will be built for an additional capacity of 6 million tonnes per annum.
Apart from this, the group is also planning to build the world’s biggest integrated green energy ecosystem involving 100 gigawatts (GW) of renewable energy.

This is the first major announcement by the group after US authorities accused the group’s Chairman Gautam Adani as well as some other top executives of being part of a $265 million bribery scheme to secure green energy contracts.
The group has denied the allegations, calling the charges “baseless.”
That came with the group having previously committed to investing $100 billion in renewable energy, valuing their green energy business up to $160 billion.
