French finance minister says budget can still be improved

French Finance Minister Antoine Armand said on Saturday that the 2025 budget could still be improved, but stopped short of giving ground in a standoff with the far right over new concessions.
Ratings agency Standard & Poor’s gave Prime Minister Michel Barnier’s fragile minority government a rare reprieve late on Friday leaving its rating steady although France’s budget deficit has spiralled out of control this year.
Any relief is likely to prove short-lived with both the left and far right threatening to bring Barnier’s government down over the budget, which seeks to squeeze 60 billion euros ($64 billion) in savings through tax hikes and spending cuts.
Marine Le Pen‘s far right National Rally (RN), whose tacit support Barnier needs to survive a likely no confidence motion, has given him until Monday to accede to her demands to make further changes to the budget.
“This government, under his authority, is willing to listen, to have a dialog, to be respectful, to improve this budget,” Armand told journalists.
Asked about the showdown with Le Pen, he said: “The only ultimatum really facing the French is that our country gets a budget.”
On Thursday, Barnier already dropped plans to raise electricity taxes in the budget as the RN had demanded, but it is keeping pressure on the government to scrap plans to postpone an increase in some pensions to save money.
RN lawmaker Jean-Philippe Tanguy told Les Echos newspaper on Saturday if the bill is not modified the party would back a no-confidence motion.
The test could come as soon Monday if his government has to use an aggressive constitutional measure to ram the social security financing legislation through parliament, which will trigger a no-confidence motion.

A few days ago, Dua spoke about the mashup of her song ‘Levitating’ with ‘Wo Ladki Jo Sabse Alag Hai’ from the Shah Rukh Khan-starrer ‘Baadshah’. Surprised, Shabana reminded him that they had been together all day, leaving her amused at his quick-witted response.
Shabana also shared that the superstar subtly kicked her under the table, signaling her to stay quiet. Later, he explained he didn’t want to reveal he tripped over his lungi, jokingly scolding her for always telling the truth. His playful reaction left her laughing uncontrollably.

They were cheering for Ranbir’s team, Mumbai City FC, as it played against Hyderabad FC. Alia even took Raha for a walk around the field as Mumbai triumphed at the end. Dua Lipa is headlining the second edition of Zomato Feeding India Concert. The concert also features artists like Jonita Gandhi, Talwiinder and others. The concert is being held at Mumbai’s Bandra Kurla Centre (BKC).

The Grammy-winning singer arrived in the city on Thursday. The same night, she was spotted dining with her boyfriend, actor Callum Turner. The couple visited Veronica’s, a restaurant in Bandra.

“One of the best parts about touring the world is getting to be a tourist in so many new places, and I always find the best things to do when I’m in Asia and definitely in India. Last time I visited, I met so many warm and kind people,” she told Variety.

Lipa, 29, was on a vacation with her family in India last December, when they visited Delhi and Jodhpur in Rajasthan.

Her last performance in India was in 2019.

Krushna gave Govinda a massive hug and even called him ‘Mama number 1.’ Govinda joked what did he mean by calling him uncle number 1, is he buttering him up?

When Krushna made another joke about Chunky Pandey selling leg piece plates from the biriyani shop, Govinda did not miss the chance to joke about his leg. The actor had accidentally shot a bullet in his leg last month. Govinda said that when he was hopsitalized, Krushna came and cried a lot. And here he is now, cracking jokes about ‘leg piece!’ Govinda further added if he had shot any higher then imagine how many leg pieces would be there!

Krushna went on to add that he will say whatever he pleases because his uncle is here! It is because of his blessings that he has become a star, he added. Govinda smiled at the sweet gesture.

Krushna Abhishek and his uncle, Govinda, experienced a public feud beginning in 2016. The discord started when Krushna made a joke on his show, which Govinda found disrespectful.

New Delhi: Expressing his disappointment at the second-quarter estimates of 5.4 per cent GDP growth, Charan  Singh, Chief Executive Officer, EGROW Foundation, has said that corrective measures should be taken faster economic growth and interest rates should be brought down. He said India has the potential to grow much higher than 5.4 per cent given the demographic profile of the country.

India’s GDP grew by 5.4 per cent in the July-September quarter of FY2024-25, significantly below the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) forecast of 7 per cent. The official data, released by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, showed that India’s GDP for Q2 of FY2024-25 stood at Rs44.10 lakh crore, up from Rs41.86 lakh crore in the same quarter last year. India’s economy grew by 6.7 per cent in Q1.

Charan Singh said he feels that the interest rate policy will have to be revisited “We followed the United States of America, which has raised the interest rate, but they had reduced it too. If we had raised the interest rates, maybe when America had started reducing their interest rates, we could have followed suit,” said Charan Singh, a former RBI Chair Professor of Economics at Indian Institute of Management Bangalore.

“If we analyse the capital formation properly, the interest rate needs to be really taken into account…otherwise, if you look at the high-frequency indicators given in the press release of MoSPI, they are quite promising, so I will not be worried. I am certainly disappointed and I think corrective measures need to be taken urgently,” he added. Singh suggested measures for faster GDP growth.

“Looking at the figure of capital formation, I feel the interest rate should be brought down. At this rate, investors will postpone their decision to take loans for cars or setting up new industries because they know that interest rates will come down in the near future,” he said.

“Second thing is that the inflation target should be interpreted as between 2-6 per cent and not pivoted at 4 per cent. In the last 30 years, we have never actually achieved 4 per cent. If you look at the average of 30 years, we are around 5.5 to 6 per cent. If we are going to pivot it at 4 per cent, we could be strangulating growth,” he added.

Charan Singh stressed that private sector should be encouraged to bring multiplier effect to the government increasing capital expenditure. “The final point I would like to make is that in this growth story of Viksit Bharat, we should be proud that the Prime Minister of the country is thinking as a visionary for the next 25 years. But in the story of Viksit Bharat, the whole thing cannot be done by the government itself. The government does make efforts by increasing the capital expenditure, but the multiplier effect has to come from the private sector. The private sector has to be encouraged,” he said.
