Cricketer-turned-commentator Harbhajan Singh, who is currently working on his biography, has expressed his desire for Vicky Kaushal to portray him in the film adaptation. Speaking exclusively to ETimes at the book launch of fitness guru Kiran Demble, hosted by producer Deepak Singh, Harbhajan shared his thoughts on cricket, cinema, and fitness. What are your thoughts on the rising trend of sports biopics? Sports biopics are inspiring stories. When I saw Kapil Dev playing and lifting the World Cup trophy, I wished one day I should have the same trophy in my hand. That inspired me to become a cricketer. Such films are very important for society. Love stories and masala films can be made, but inspiring stories need to reach the world. Anyone who comes from a small village or a humble background, which seems unachievable, and then becomes a very big thing is an inspiration. For example, I saw Kartik Aaryan’s Chandu Champion—a story of an unsung hero and what a journey it was. There are so many champions whose stories we don’t know. It is important for cinema to tell such stories, which can inspire the next generation. When I saw Chandu Champion, I said I have to show this film to my daughter. Are you considering a film on Kiran Demble’s inspiring journey? It is up to Deepak if he is planning to make a film on Kiran Demble. It will inspire the next generation. Is there a possibility of a film being made on your life story? I have been writing my story for about two years now. When I was growing up, I had nothing but a dream. To fulfill that dream, you have to stay awake and keep working towards it. I came from Jalandhar. I didn’t even have a cycle. Today, I can say that God has provided me with everything. If it can happen to me, anyone can achieve it, provided they put in the hard work.
Who do you think would be the perfect actor to portray you in a film about your life? I think Vicky Kaushal would be an ideal choice. Both he and I are from the same district and speak the same language. I will certainly talk to him. How do you feel about your new role as a commentator, and how does it compare to playing cricket? It’s easier than playing cricket. Being an ambassador of the game brings me joy, and staying connected with cricket makes me happy. Without cricket, my existence would be zero. What does fitness mean to you? Fitness is life. If you have fitness, you can achieve anything. Fitness has been the key for me. What inspired your association with this book, and are you and Geeta considering the possibility of making a film based on it? I have known Deepak for a while now. He made a biopic on my friend Sandeep Singh, titled ‘Soorma’. These are inspiring stories. When I heard that a 45-year-old woman became a fitness icon and represented India on a global level, as a sportsman, I wanted to be there, especially as the book is about fitness: Everything is achievable. If I can, you can. What is your reaction to Navjot Sidhu’s views on cancer and his approach to treatment? Everyone has their own point of view, and whatever has worked for him, he has shared. What has been good for his family is what he has shared. I certainly believe that science and doctors do their work. We have to be disciplined enough to eat right.

President Volodymyr Zelensky has suggested that the parts of Ukraine under his control should be taken “under the Nato umbrella” to try and stop the “hot phase” of the war.
He was asked by Sky News whether he would accept Nato membership, but only on the territory that Kyiv currently holds.
Zelensky said he would, but only if Nato membership was offered to the whole of Ukraine, within its internationally recognised borders, first.
Ukraine could then attempt to negotiate the return of territory currently under Russian control “in a diplomatic way”, he said in a wide-ranging interview.
But the suggestion is highly theoretical. Zelensky is not floating any new proposals – this was a television interview, not a diplomatic forum – but he is sending signals.
Whether Nato would ever consider such a move is highly doubtful.
“Ukraine has never considered such a proposal, because no-one has officially offered it to us,” Zelensky said.
Nato would need to offer membership to the whole country, including those parts currently under Russian control, he said.
“You can’t give [an] invitation to just one part of a country,” the president said, according to a translation provided by Sky News. “Why? Because thus, you would recognise that Ukraine is only that territory of Ukraine, and the other one is Russia.”
Lots of people were proposing ceasefires, he said, but without a mechanism to prevent Russia from attacking again, ceasefires were simply too dangerous.
Only NATO membership, he said, could offer that kind of guarantee.
The Ukrainian president has already said that he thinks the war could end in the coming year if Ukraine’s allies show sufficient resolve.
Reports suggest that discussion of the so-called West German model – Nato membership offered to a divided country – has been going on in Western circles for more than a year.
But no formal proposals have yet been made.
Meanwhile, Zelensky has been keen to sound willing to engage with whatever proposals US President-elect Donald Trump might be considering.
“I want to share with him ideas, and I want to hear from him, his ideas,” Zelensky said.
The Ukrainian leader said he would be sending a team in the coming days to meet Trump officials, including the president-elect’s recently appointed special envoy for Ukraine, retired general Keith Kellogg.
In April, Gen Kellogg co-authored a plan, called America First: Russia & Ukraine, which would freeze the front lines in Ukraine and pressure both Kyiv and Moscow to come to the negotiating table.
Future US military assistance to Ukraine would be conditioned on Kyiv’s willingness to enter peace talks.
But in the event of a ceasefire, Washington would continue to provide military assistance and “strengthen [Ukraine’s] defences to ensure Russia will make no further advances and will not attack again after a ceasefire or peace agreement.”
Under the proposals, NATO membership for Ukraine would be put off for an extended period.
For Zelensky, this begs a crucial question: what guarantees of security would the Trump administration be willing to offer?
“Without NATO, it’s not real independence for Ukraine because he [Russian President Vladimir Putin] will come back,” Zelensky insisted.
The differences between Zelensky’s peace plan and the nascent Trump policy are still substantial.
But by engaging with the idea of a ceasefire and painful territorial sacrifices (in the short term at least), the Ukrainian leader is doing his utmost to sound constructive, conscious that there are so far no equivalent signs coming from Moscow.
Russia annexed the Crimean peninsula in 2014. Eight years later, it launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine and has occupied territory in the country’s east.
But It is also worth noting that so far Putin has given absolutely no indication that he’s abandoned his desire to subjugate Ukraine entirely.
The idea that he would be willing to allow any part of Ukraine to join Nato is, for now, unthinkable.
All the indications so far suggest that any involvement of Nato is a complete non-starter.

Janhvi recently made her big Telugu debut with Devara Part 1, which also stars Jr NTR, Saif Ali Khan, Prakash Raj, Srikanth Meka, Tom Shine Chacko, and Narain. In the film, Jr NTR takes on a dual role, playing both Devara and Varadha. His character is pivotal to the storyline, which revolves around a dramatic clash of wills in a coastal setting where power dynamics are in constant flux. Tarachand Barjatya, the founder of Rajshree Films and grandfather of filmmaker Sooraj Barjatya, strongly believed that cinema could succeed without relying on obscenity or violence. In 1979, Tarachand Barjatya produced the mythological film Gopal Krishna, starring Zarina Wahab and Sachin Pilgaonkar. Staying true to his principles, he set strict guidelines for his actors, including a unique rule: they had to avoid eating non-vegetarian food while shooting mythological films. Zarina Wahab, who played Radha in the film, recently shared her experience of being cast and the conditions Tarachand set for her. In an interview with Lehren Retro, Zarina recalled receiving a call one night, asking her to come to a film set the next day if she was free. She agreed and went there, where she was given an outfit to try on and check for fit.Zarina was brought in to replace another actress who had been removed from the project due to unprofessional behavior. She mentioned that the replacement happened after 11 reels of the film had already been shot, but chose not to reveal the name of the actress. Her hairdresser at the time had informed her about the situation. After her first day on set, Zarina was called to Tarachand Barjatya’s office, where he explained his expectations for her role. He told her that, since she was playing Radha in Gopal Krishna, she needed to stop eating meat until the film was completed. Zarina agreed and followed this request until the film’s release.
Although it was difficult at first, Zarina adapted to the new lifestyle and eventually started preferring vegetarian food. She mentioned that now she prefers vegetarian over non-vegetarian, except when she’s in Hyderabad, where she loves biryani.

Ahead of the busy holiday and Christmas season in the United States, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has released a “safety check” to help online shoppers avoid falling prey to scams.

The advisory is for users of Chrome, Safari and Edge browsers, which together control 95% of the browser market in the US.
The FBI said on its X handle: “Don’t let #holiday excitement cloud your judgment! Always verify the legitimacy of online retailers and be cautious with unsolicited offers. Learn how to spot a holiday scam at fbi.gov/holidayscams.”
According to Forbes, the advisory lists seven key points:
(1.) Don’t buy from a website until you’ve carefully checked the URL to ensure it is “legitimate” and “secure.” A proper website should have a secure connection padlock in the address bar and “https” at the opening of the full address.
(2.) Before buying from a website for the first time, do some research on it and check its online reviews. However, as reviews can be faked, don’t trust the first ones you find.
(3.) On auction sites, be wary of sellers with unfavourable ratings or no ratings at all. Always select sellers with a large number of completed transactions and favourable reviews.
(4.) Avoid sellers who act as “authorised dealers” or “factory representatives” of popular items in countries where there would be no such deals.
(5.) Also avoid sellers who post an auction or advertisement as if they are in the US, but then respond to questions by stating they are out of the country on business, family emergency, or similar reasons.
(6.) Don’t buy from websites that specify “unusual” shipping arrangements or offer to bypass customs checks or fees. For additional checks and protection, only debit cards should be used.
(7.) Don’t pay for items purchased with pre-paid gift cards.

Bollywood actress Kashmera Shah recently took to her Instagram account to reveal that she met with an accident in the United States while she was alone and far from her family. The news raised concern among her fans and well-wishers. However, her husband, actor Krushna Abhishek, has now assured everyone that she is feeling better. Earlier, Kashmera had shared pictures of blood-stained tissues on her car seat and her nose covered in bandages. Krushna later explained the details of the incident. Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Thanksgiving was disturbed by law enforcement as they swept through his apartment. TMZ reports suggested that the Los Angeles Police Department landed at the actor’s home after they received a distress call. The call had reported that a bomb had been placed in Schwarzenegger’s mailbox at his home. However, it turned out to be a false alarm.

Sourced revealed to the news outlet that the police had a conversation with the Terminator actor’s security staff and claimed that it would be a task for anyone to install a bomb near his home given there is 24-hour security and video surveillance in the place. These were set up by the actor to ensure the safety of him and his family.
When the police arrived at Schwarzenegger’s home, the actor was not present there as he was at the gym and was expected to join the family later for the holiday dinner. So far no arrests have been made by the LAPD in connection with the bomb threat or the reporting call. India stands at the cusp of an energy revolution, with batteries playing an essential role in driving sustainable development across various sectors. As the country aims to reduce its dependence on fossil fuels and transition towards clean energy sources, the battery manufacturing and recycling ecosystem is likely to emerge as a key component of this transition.

Currently, two primary types of batteries dominate the market, namely lead-acid batteries and lithium-ion batteries (LIB). While lead-acid batteries have been used in consumer electronics for decades, LiBs, on the other hand, have gained significant popularity due to their higher energy density and longer lifetime. The Mines Ministry had identified 30 critical minerals as being at risk in the supply chain in 2023. Among them, lithium (Li), cobalt (Co) and nickel (Ni) are important for electric vehicle batteries under the clean energy initiative. The government’s further budget announcement of exempting 25 critical minerals from customs duty is likely to boost the production of these advanced battery types, especially LIBs which are heavily dependent on such minerals.
As of 2020, the estimated cumulative stock of LIBs in India was about 15 GW, with consumer electronics at 61%, followed by stationary applications and transportation applications respectively. India will be a major LiB consumer by 2030, with battery storage demand of 34GW in 2023 expected to reach 450GW by 2030. Currently most of the demand for rechargeable batteries is driven by 90% automated applications.
The consumer electronics sector, which includes tablets, laptops and smartphones, represents the largest share of LIB demand in India and this market is projected to double over the next two to three years, reaching an estimated value of Rs. 2 trillion. Demand for electric vehicles (EVs), LIBs for electronic gadgets, linked and IoT-based devices, and automation and battery-powered material-handling equipment are the drivers for growth. Major demand in EVs is being seen due to LIB (80%) due to government pressure to replace 30% existing vehicles with EVs by 2030.
This dominance is expected to continue in the coming years and given the increasing dependence of consumer electronics on LIBs, these batteries are critical in achieving these projected growth figures. The exponential demand for LIBs system is expected to drive considerable investment in cumulative cell manufacturing capacity of 30GWh, as cell manufacturing cost is lowest in India at $92.8/kWh, China at $98.2/kWh, Korea at $98.1/kWh.
Having said that, the current manufacturing focus in India is on assembling battery management systems (BMS) and battery packs, of which, except for some BMS components and key elements like thermal pads, most of the sub-components are produced domestically. Which are mostly imported from China. Currently, Li-ion cells or battery packs in India are mainly imported from China, South Korea or Taiwan. However, challenges including shortage of key raw materials and limited research and development hinder scaling up domestic battery cell manufacturing.
70% of the world’s lithium is extracted from brines in Bolivia, Argentina, Australia, the United States, Chile and China and extraction is a water and energy intensive process. Recently, deposits have been found in the Salal-Haimana area of Reasi district in Jammu and Kashmir. About 47% of cobalt reserves are in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, about 23% in Australia, about 10% in Indonesia and about 20% in the rest of the world. By changing battery chemistry, manufacturers balance cobalt supply with demand. Cobalt prices have fallen by more than 31% recently. Nickel-based lithium-ion batteries show higher energy density than cobalt-based batteries. Nickel reserves amount to 100 million metric tons, where Indonesia and Australia have the largest shares (21 million metric tons).
Due to limited reserves of critical materials, circular economy (CE) is the preferred business model for creating alternative sources. Urban mining gives high returns with effective extraction efficiency, for example one ton of battery grade lithium can be extracted from 750 tons of brine or 250 tons of ores, while 1T battery graded lithium can be easily extracted from 28 tons of discarded LIB. Could. Similarly, one tonne of battery grade cobalt can be obtained from 300 tonnes of ore, while the same amount of lithium may require five-15 tonnes of waste lithium ion batteries. However this scenario will only be true if there is battery grade recycling.
Looking ahead, the total cumulative capacity of battery storage in India is estimated to reach an impressive 600 GWh by 2030. Furthermore, the projected energy savings from recycling materials in consumer electronics is estimated to be 14.7 GWh between 2022 and 2030. As a result, dedicated efficient recycling technologies for consumer electronics batteries are increasingly becoming paramount. While the EV segment is anticipated to contribute a large segment, the consumer electronics sector will also play an essential role in the recycling ecosystem due to the shorter lifespan and higher turnover rates of these devices compared to cars.
Recognizing this importance of battery recycling, the government had enacted various regulations including the Battery (Management and Handling) Rules, 2001 and Battery Waste Management Rules, 2022 to promote responsible disposal and recycling. These rules outline the responsibilities of producers, dealers, consumers. or entities involved in ensuring the proper collection, transportation and recycling of used batteries, including consumer electronics. Additionally, the recent budget announcement on National Critical Mineral Mission (NCMM) further emphasizes this commitment. As announced by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, the mission will focus on domestic production, recycling of critical minerals and foreign acquisition of critical mineral assets. In implementation of this Mission, a proposed Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme for Critical Mineral Recycling is under consideration by the Ministry of Mines. The scheme seeks to promote a circular economy by encouraging the recovery and re-use of critical minerals, thereby reducing dependence on imports and supporting the development of domestic supply chains. However, despite these initiatives, challenges remain, including ambitious recycling targets, inadequate infrastructure, and a cumbersome compliance process. Issues such as daily uploading of sales and purchase data and marking of EPR registration numbers are likely to disrupt global chains and make compliance cumbersome. Additionally, the regulations’ emphasis on using recycled materials domestically adds complexity, as India’s manufacturing and recycling systems are still in the early stages of development.
Effective solutions to these challenges require implementation of specialized recycling facilities and research into recycling technologies. This should be complemented with consumer awareness campaigns on proper battery disposal. Additionally, encouraging manufacturers to design devices with easily removable batteries is another essential component.
Strategic public-private partnerships (PPPs) could be important to further strengthen the battery ecosystem. By fostering collaboration between government bodies, industry leaders and research institutions, India can accelerate innovation and establish stronger supply chains. Investment in local manufacturing capabilities and R&D can reduce dependence on imports, thereby increasing self-reliance.
On the international front, India can explore opportunities to engage with global initiatives and frameworks focused on sustainable energy and battery technology. Participation in international collaboration can provide access to advanced technologies, best practices, and funding opportunities.
Furthermore, India must prioritize the development of a skilled workforce capable of driving the battery revolution. Educational and vocational training programs focused on battery technology, recycling processes and sustainable practices can equip the workforce with the skills needed to support the industry’s growth.
India’s journey towards sustainable India requires collaboration of stakeholders from all sectors including government, industry and academia to overcome technological barriers, establish efficient recycling infrastructure and create a circular economy. Developing a comprehensive ecosystem for battery recycling will meet India’s needs and position the country as a global and self-reliant hub for sustainable technology.
