US chipmaker Broadcom‘s Chief Executive Hock Tan on Friday will try to convince EU antitrust enforcers that his proposed $61 billion (nearly Rs. 4,98,300 crore) bid for cloud computing firm VMware, which has triggered scrutiny on both sides of the Atlantic, is pro-competitive.
Tan, flanked by his executives and lawyers, arrived early Friday morning in Brussels for a closed hearing on one of the biggest tie-ups in the history of the technology sector. He declined to comment as he headed into the hearing.
Tan will present his arguments to senior European Commission officials, including its deputy director general for mergers Guillaume Loriot, and their counterparts from national competition agencies as well as lawyers from the EU executive.
VMware President Sumit Dhawan will appear remotely at the hearing. There are no other third parties at the hearing.
Broadcom’s request for the hearing came after the Commission last month warned the deal may restrict competition in the market for certain hardware components which interoperate with VMware’s software.
The company had hoped that regulators would consider the presence of Amazon, Microsoft and Google in the cloud computing market as proof of strong competition, other people familiar with the matter told Reuters last year.
Broadcom is expected to offer remedies in the coming days after the oral hearing. The EU deadline for a decision is June 21, which will be extended once concessions are submitted.

Gemini Nano Expanded to all Android App Developers
The Mountain View-based tech giant introduced Gemini Nano in 2023 as its smallest language model, distilled from the larger Gemini AI model. It was designed to handle on-device AI tasks. So far, it was being used to power AI features on the newer Pixel handsets and the Galaxy S24 series in the first-party Google apps.
This is set to change as the company has announced that the AI model will be accessible to Android app developers who can implement Gemini Nano capabilities in their apps with the AI Edge SDK via AICore. Google said that developers will initially only have access to text-based prompts on the Pixel 9 series smartphones. However, support for more devices and modalities will be added in the future.
Sharing Images from Android to the Gemini App
Android Authority reports that Gemini v1.0.668480831 allows images in the Gallery app or in another third-party app to be shared directly with Gemini using the Android share sheet. This functionality can be useful, especially if users have a large number of images stored on their devices.
With this, users can find the image in the app where they found it and directly send it to Gemini. Once shared, they can open the app and add a query about it. Gadgets 360 staff members were not able to verify the presence of the feature after updating to the specified version.
Apart from this, the tech giant also updated Gemini Live with support for Hindi and eight regional languages at the Google for India 2024 event, while AI overviews will soon be available in four regional languages, in addition to Hindi and English.

“He reassured me. He said, ‘I’m saying this to you as your senior, not as your father. You’re nowhere near the finished product. You have a lot of improving to do. But I’m noticing improvement in every film of yours. There’s a hidden good actor within you. How good you become is up to you and how hard you want to work. The only way you’re going to be able to polish your craft is by working. So go out there, whatever film you get, just sign and work.’ And that’s what I did. I just went out. I didn’t care what kind of role it was – supporting, secondary, tertiary, I did everything until I found the confidence in myself. And then until, from the box office perspective, I could deliver at the box office and people started banking on me as a leading man again,” Abhishek added.
Abhishek referred to his father as his “reference point” always. Like his son, Amitabh also tasted success quite late. After seven of his films didn’t work at the box office, he broke through as the leading man in Prakash Mehra’s 1973 blockbuster Zanjeer, which kickstarted his iconic era as the Angry Young Man in Hindi cinema.

Intel Arc A580 desktop graphics card was launched by the company earlier this week. The new midrange GPU is aimed at creators and gamers, according to the US chipmaker. Gamers will be able to play popular titles in full 1080p resolution at high settings using the new Intel Arc A580 GPU. It will also offer high frame rates on esports games, as per details shared by the firm. Meanwhile, the graphics card will also support Intel XeSS and hardware accelerated ray tracing.
Announced several months ago, the Intel Arc A580 has finally arrived in global markets. The graphics card has 24 Xe cores and 24 ray tracing units. The company say it has a peak clock speed of 1700MHz and is equipped with 8GB of GDDR6 VRAM with a memory bandwidth of 512GB/s.
The newly launched Intel Arc 5-series graphics card for desktop computers has a total board power (TBP) of 185W. It features a slightly less capable version of the GPU that is found on Intel’s more expensive Arc A770 and A750 GPUs.

The product page for the Intel Arc A580 states that the game provides high framerates for popular titles at 1080p resolution. On Diablo IV and Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered, for example, it offers 155fps and 119fps respectively. Baldur’s Gate III and Cyberpunk 2077 (With XeSS and ray tracing) run at 90fps and 85fps, according to Intel.
The chipmaker is also touting the AI capabilities of the Arc A580 GPU. These include workloads that involve on-device generative AI tasks like running Stable Diffusion. It will also support Intel’s XeSS AI-based image upscaling technology, which depends on the company’s Intel Xe Matrix Extensions (Intel XMX) AI technology.
According to the company, the new Intel A580 graphics card pricing starts at $179 (roughly Rs. 14,900). The new midrange graphics card is now available for purchase from manufacturers like ASRock, Gunnir, and Sparkle in regions where other Arc GPUs like the Intel Arc 750 and Intel Arc A770 are available.

In the new book released November 19, the Strong Enough singer recalled dating a boy from her neighbourhood, whom she kissed in her bedroom. Shortly after, she began noticing changes in his behaviour. “[He] was sweet enough when we were alone, but as soon as his friends came around, he’d treat me like an embarrassing kid,” Cher explained.
The Believe singer further wrote that one day, when the boy’s friends mockingly asked him if was bringing “that kid” [Cher] along with him for a group outing, he “ditched” her. “I was so hurt when he did that, I had revenge sex with him. I had never wanted to. Otherwise, I would have done it one of the five hundred other times he asked,” Cher wrote.
“But I was so angry at being dismissed, I decided to, if not lose, loan out my virginity to him,” she went on, adding that her first sexual experience was “massively overrated.” Cher recalled that once it was over, she asked him, “Is that it? Are we finished?” “Then I told him to go home and never come back. I wanted him to feel just as dismissed as he’d made me feel,” she added.
The Grammy winner also revealed that the boy, who she did not name, tried to make amends with her, but she never spoke to him again. In her memoir, Cher also explained how she feared her mother’s reaction to her losing her virginity. “My mother warned me that the minute I lost my virginity she’d know because she’d see it in my eyes, so after the romp with the Italian, I ran to the mirror to check,” she wrote.
However, Cher’s anxiety died down after she realised that her mother did not seem to notice a difference. “I half expected to see the word SEX flashing in fluorescent letters across my forehead, but I couldn’t spot anything different, and she didn’t either,” the I Got You Babe crooner added.

Travel portal MakeMyTrip on Monday said it has collaborated with Microsoft to use Generative AI to make travel planning accessible by introducing voice-assisted booking in Indian languages.
The new, in-platform tech stack powered by Microsoft Azure OpenAI Service and Azure Cognitive Services, will converse with the user to offer personalised travel recommendations based on their preferences, curate holiday packages based on variable inputs like occasion, budget, activity preferences, time of travel, among others, and even help book these holiday packages, MakeMyTrip said in a statement.
“We have pioneered offerings at the intersection of e-commerce, travel and technology, and are proud to introduce a feature that breaks down the barriers of language, literacy, inability to navigate complex app environments, physical impairments, etc.
“This Generative AI integration through our collaboration with Microsoft involves simple visual cues and voice commands in native Indian languages that will alter the landscape of travel bookings hereon forth,” MakeMyTrip Co-Founder and Group CEO Rajesh Magow said.
Currently, the beta version of this integration has been introduced in English and Hindi for flights and holidays customers.
“Bringing together MakeMyTrip’s expertise with Microsoft’s AI capabilities, including Microsoft Azure OpenAI Service, our collaboration will help make travel more inclusive and accessible for travellers across India, with trust and security at the core,” Microsoft India Executive Director, Digital Natives, Sangeeta Bavi said.
This will elevate the hotel booking experience by offering personalised and relevant information to the user without having to scroll through multiple reviews, it added.
