Android 15 Rolling Out to Pixel Phones; Brings Theft Detection Lock, Private Space and More


Android 15 rollout has commenced for Pixel devices, Google announced on Tuesday. The latest operating system (OS) was globally released on September 3. Google has detailed the features of the update on Pixel devices, including security measures like Theft Detection Lock and privacy-centric additions such as Private Space. Furthermore, Android 15 also includes exclusive functionality for foldable smartphones and devices along with improvements for the camera and authentication.

Android 15 Features

In a blog post, Google highlighted the features arriving on Pixel smartphones with the Android 15 update, including a feature dubbed Theft Detection Lock. It leverages artificial intelligence (AI) to sense if the device has been snatched or stolen and lock it automatically. Alternatively, users can take advantage of the existing Remote Lock functionality to manually lock the handset using the mobile number.

The Mountain View-based tech giant is also making it more difficult for malicious actors to access the device settings, courtesy of added authentication requirements for actions like removing SIM or turning off Find My Device. If multiple failed attempts are detected, the device will automatically be locked.

Google also emphasised on privacy with the already-previewed Private Space feature — private space for users to store their private information. Users will be able to add another layer of authentication to this space or choose to hide it entirely from the view.

For foldable devices like the new Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold, Android 15 will allow users to pin or unpin the taskbar on the screen for easy access. They can customise the layout of the page and keep frequently used apps within quick reach. The update’s App Pairing feature is claimed to make multitasking easier by enabling sharing of files using drag and drop. Users can also save their most frequently used app combinations and they will appear as a single app icon on the home screen.

Android 15 also includes other changes on Pixel devices such as improved controls in the camera app during low-light conditions, more precise control in third-party camera apps, single-tap login in apps using Passkeys for authentication, and the ability to use satellite communication in third-party apps without Wi-Fi or cellular connection.

Eligible Google Pixel Models

Several Pixel smartphones, ranging from the latest Pixel 9 series to the Pixel 6 series, are expected to get the upgrade to Android 15. Google says the following Pixel smartphones are eligible to receive the over-the-air (OTA) update:

Dell has refreshed some of its XPS laptops ahead of the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2024 that’s scheduled to be held from January 9 to January 12. The Dell XPS 13, XPS 14, and XPS 16 laptops now come with Intel Core Ultra processors that are equipped with Intel AI Boost Neural Processing Unit (NPU). These NPUs are said to increase support for inbuilt AI-backed features. The XPS 14 and XPS 16 are equipped with a Windows Hello-compliant fingerprint scanner embedded in the power button. These laptops are pre-installed with Windows 11 and support Microsoft-backed AI chatbot Copilot. The models will soon be available in the US and Canada.

Dell XPS 13, XPS 14, XPS 16 price

In a blog post, Dell confirmed that the XPS 13 will start at $1,299.99 (roughly Rs. 1,08,200), while the XPS 14 and XPS 16 will start at $1,699.99 (roughly Rs. 1,41,500) and $1,899.99 (roughly Rs. 1,58,100), respectively. The models are offered in Graphite and Platinum colour options. The availability of these laptops is expected to be announced at the upcoming CES 2024.

Dell XPS 13 specifications

The Dell XPS 13 is offered with either a 13.4-inch full-HD+ (1,920 x 1,200 pixels) InfinityEdge non-touch display or a 13.4-inch QHD+ (2,560 x 1,600 pixels) InfinityEdge touch display, with a refresh rate of up to 120Hz and peak brightness level of 500 nits. It is also available in a 13.4-inch 3K+ (2,880 x 1,800 pixels) InfinityEdge touch display option with a refresh rate of up to 60Hz.

Users will be able to configure this model with either Intel Core Ultra 5 Processor 125H, Intel Core Ultra 7 Processor 155H, or Intel Core Ultra 7 Processor 165H paired with Intel Arc graphics, up to 64GB of LPDDR5X dual channel RAM, and up to 4TB of PCIe 4 SSD. The laptop carries a 55Wh battery with a 60W AC adapter and ExpressCharge 1.0 support.

Dell XPS 14 specifications

Next up, the Dell XPS 14 gets a 14.5-inch full-HD+ (1,920 x 1,200 pixels) InfinityEdge non-touch screen with a refresh rate of up to 120Hz and a 14.5-inch 3K+ (3,200 x 2,000 pixels) InfinityEdge touch-enabled panel option. The model comes in variants of either an Intel Core Ultra 7 Processor 155H or an Intel Core Ultra 7 Processor 165H paired with Intel Arc Graphics or Nvidia GeForce RTX 4050 GPU. It supports up to 64GB of LPDDR5X dual channel RAM and up to 4TB PCIe 4 SSD. It is backed by a 69.5Wh battery with support for 60W charging for the Intel graphics variant and 100W charging for the Nvidia GPU option.

Dell XPS 16 specifications

Finally, the Dell XPS 16 is available in options of a 16.3-inch full-HD+ (1,920 x 1,200 pixels) InfinityEdge non-touch panel with a refresh rate of up to 120Hz and a 16.3-inch 4K+ (3,840 x 2,400 pixels) InfinityEdge touch display with a refresh rate of up to 90Hz. The CPU variants offered with this model are – Intel Core Ultra 7 Processor 155H, Intel Core Ultra 7 Processor 165H, and Intel Core Ultra 9. The chipsets can be paired with an Intel Arc Graphics, a Nvidia GeForce RTX 4050, a GeForce RTX 4060, or a GeForce RTX 4070 GPU. The laptop supports up to 64GB of LPDDR5X dual channel RAM and up to 4TB PCIe 4 SSD. It packs a 99.5Wh battery with 130W charging support.

Jujutsu Kaisen is Best Selling Manga of the year

Though the manga officially wrapped up this year, Jujutsu Kaisen’s glory is far from over! Gege Akutami’s brilliant masterpiece continues to make waves, clinching the top spot as the best-selling manga of 2024. With a jaw-dropping 76,10,995 copies sold between November 20th, 2023 and November 17th, 2024, it’s clear that the magic of Jujutsu Kaisen is still very much alive. Fans can’t get enough of its electrifying battles and unforgettable characters, and the series has proven once again that its power is unstoppable.

The manga was followed by another fan-favourite manga which secured the second position on the chart. The long-tim manga, One Piece created by Eiichira Oda claimed the next best spot by selling 52,80,000 copies this year.

Top 10 managas on the chart

Jujutsu Kaisen and One Piece claimed the top two spots but other mangas made it to the list including titles like Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End which claimed the third spot with 49,55,000 copies followed by The Apothecary Diaries in the fourth position which sold 46, 95,000 copies. Completing the list of the Top 5 best-selling mangas was Blue Lock which sold 38,81,269 copies in 2024.

The sixth spot on the list was secured by Kaiju No.8 as it sold 34,15, 000 copies followed by Kingdom in the seventh position and Haikyu!! in the eighth position as they sold 32,35,000 and 10,75,000 copies, respectively. Another popular title among anime fans, My Hero Academia landed on the ninth position selling 29,10,000 copies. The last spot was occupied by Spy x Family which sold 27,10,000 copies.

Scientists at Penn State University have identified that microplastics present in the atmosphere could be influencing the Earth’s climate. A study published in Environmental Science and Technology: Air reveals that these tiny plastic particles may act as ice nucleating agents within clouds, impacting precipitation, weather, and possibly even aviation. Although the precise effects remain unclear, the findings highlight the possibility of microplastics playing an underestimated role in climate dynamics.

Microplastics Detected in Remote and Extreme Locations

As per the study, Microplastics—particles less than five millimetres in size—have been found globally, from deep ocean trenches to high-altitude clouds. Penn State’s research now adds that airborne microplastics, found even in remote mountain regions, may contribute to climate change by altering cloud structures. Professor Miriam Freedman, a senior author and chemistry professor at Penn State, stated that the study underscores the need to understand microplastics’ interactions with the atmospheric system, especially in cloud formation processes.

Laboratory Analysis Reveals Microplastic Behaviour in Ice Formation

The study further mentions that in the experiments, the research team examined how four types of microplastics—low-density polyethylene (LDPE), polypropylene (PP), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), and polyethylene terephthalate (PET)—affect ice formation. The particles were reported to suspended in water droplets and cooled, revealing that microplastic-laden droplets froze at higher temperatures compared to those without. Lead author Heidi Busse, a Penn State graduate researcher, reported that the presence of microplastics allowed freezing at up to 10 degrees warmer, signifying that such particles could promote cloud ice nucleation at milder temperatures.

Implications for Climate Patterns and Precipitation

While the full impact of microplastics on climate remains uncertain, Dr. Freedman suggests they may alter precipitation patterns by influencing cloud properties. In areas with high microplastic levels, water dispersal among many particles could result in smaller droplets, delaying rainfall but potentially leading to heavier precipitation once droplets coalesce.

Environmental Ageing and Future Research Directions

Environmental factors, such as exposure to sunlight and atmospheric chemicals, also appear to affect microplastics’ ice-forming potential, with aged PVC showing increased nucleation ability. Future research will focus on additives in plastics, which could reveal further effects on Earth’s climate.

Microsoft believes that Sony PlayStation will release a PS5 Slim model, later this year. New court documents from the ongoing trial between Xbox parent company Microsoft and the US FTC indicate that the tech giant expects rival Sony to unveil the long-rumoured less-expensive PS5 model at a price tag of $399.99 (about Rs. 32,825). As per IGN, the paragraph was Microsoft’s attempt at convincing the judge to consider the Nintendo Switch in the same market as PlayStation and Xbox, when it boils down to price. The idea is to present itself as the underdog in the console market, so it successfully acquires Activision Blizzard without posing a threat to the game industry.

“In fact, the entry-level versions of the current Xbox and Switch are offered at the same price point ($299.99), and the Xbox Series S is sold for $50 less than the Switch OLED model ($349.99),” Microsoft said in the document (via IGN). “PlayStation likewise sells a less expensive Digital Edition for $399.99, and is expected to release a PlayStation 5 Slim later this year at the same reduced price point.” Of course, no source is mentioned, but a report from September, last year, suggested that Sony was looking to launch a “slimmer and lighter” version of the PS5 console, poised to come with identical hardware as the existing models, albeit with a new chassis and a detachable disc drive. It’s understood that the Sony-approved external drive will be available to purchase separately, so if it malfunctions, you don’t have to buy an entirely new unit. Even if you send the drive for RMA, you should be able to play games digitally.

As mentioned before, Microsoft is trying to portray itself as the underdog here, having previously claimed that it’s been losing the console wars since 2001 and that it had given up on this generation’s competition in terms of hardware sales, instead focusing on the software and Xbox Game Pass. According to VGChartz, a third-party video game tracking site, Xbox Series S/X consoles have sold 21.3 million units since launch. In contrast, the PS5 and Nintendo Switch have sold 35.8 million and 36.2 million units, respectively, during that period — as of April 2023. These statistics align in favour of Microsoft, though further down the document, it goes on to highlight another major PlayStation console release.

“Sony is also anticipated to release a handheld version of PlayStation 5 later this year for under $300,” the document reads. This is, of course, in reference to Project Q, announced earlier this year during the PlayStation Showcase event, a handheld gaming device that lets you stream games from your PS5 console via Remote Play or Wi-Fi. The device comes equipped with an 8-inch 1080p LCD screen in the centre, supported on either side by a button layout and analogue sticks that are reminiscent of the PS5 DualSense controller.

Circling back to the PS5 Slim debate, it doesn’t come as a surprise for Sony to plan one model since the company has released slim versions for its previous consoles. Meanwhile, Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer claimed last month that he “doesn’t feel an imperative” to release a mid-generation Xbox upgrade three years into its launch cycle. “That’s not the feedback we’re getting right now. Right now, we’re pretty set on the hardware we have,” he said in the interview.

Vivo Y300 Plus Specifications

The dual-SIM (Nano) Vivo Y300 Plus runs on Funtouch OS 14 based on Android 14 and features a 6.78-inch full-HD (1,080×2,400 pixels) 3D curved display with 120Hz refresh rate as well as a peak brightness level of 1,300nits.
