Gemini, the native artificial intelligence (AI) model created by Google, will reportedly not be integrated with the iPhone for a few more months. Earlier this year, Apple announced a partnership with OpenAI, where the latter’s AI platform ChatGPT will be integrated with the former’s AI suite, Apple Intelligence. This integrated AI experience will reportedly be rolled out to users in December. However, Gemini, which was also touted to be integrated into Apple Intelligence, is said to be delayed in order to give ChatGPT an exclusive window.

Gemini Integration With the iPhone to Reportedly Occur in 2025

In his weekly Power On newsletter, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman says that Apple Intelligence integration with Google Gemini is not planned till 2025. The update comes after Craig Federighi, Senior Vice President of Software Engineering at Apple commented about it in an interview at the company’s World Wide Developer Conference (WWDC 2024). The executive said that the Cupertino-based tech giant might integrate its AI suite with other models such as Gemini.

While Federighi mentioned integration with multiple AI models is possible, the specific name-dropping of Gemini raised curiosity among enthusiasts. Now, the Bloomberg report sheds further light on this development. Gurman claimed that Gemini is not expected to arrive in iOS until next year. However, whether that would happen in the first half of the year or near the iPhone 17 series launch remains unclear.

Gurman claims that Apple might be looking to give OpenAI a window of exclusivity before it integrates any other AI model. It is not known whether this was a clause mentioned in the partnership agreement or if Apple has agreed to this as it is not paying the AI firm for ChatGPT integration with Apple Intelligence.

With regard to future updates to Apple Intelligence, the journalist also says that the iOS 18.2 update which is scheduled to arrive in December will finally bring Apple Intelligence to all compatible iPhone models. However, this global release will not include either Europe or China.

The report claims that the Cupertino-based tech giant could expand Apple Intelligence to countries under the European Union in April 2025, and expansion into China is not likely till the iOS 19 release in October.

Oppo smartphones will soon work better with PCs and laptops running on Microsoft’s Windows 11 and Windows 10 operating systems, thanks to the addition of support for Phone Link and Link to Windows. At the recently concluded 2023 Oppo Developers Conference, both companies announced that support for the two apps was coming to Oppo, OnePlus, and Realme phones. However, it appears that compatible handsets will require a software update to the latest version of ColorOS (Oppo), OxygenOS (OnePlus), and Realme UI (Realme) in order to access the features.

Microsoft’s Phone Link app was previously exclusive to the company’s Surface devices, and phones from Samsung and Honor, but the company’s support page has now been updated (via WindowsLatest) to include four new entries — Oppo Find series, Oppo Reno series, OnePlus series, and Realme series. Similarly, Microsoft’s Link to Windows documentation has also been updated to include the same entries.

The support page does not list specific smartphone models, while several from Samsung and Honor are included under different sections. Several Samsung’s smartphones are also listed under a RCS messaging section, but phones from the three Chinese OEMs are not included in this list.

According to Microsoft’s support page, the Oppo Find series, Oppo Reno series, OnePlus series, and Realme series will support Phone Link, Link to Windows, Phone screen (remotely displaying your phone screen), and Apps (allowing you to mirror apps running on your smartphone). Samsung phone users can also sync their clipboard, quickly share files and view images from their camera roll, pick up phone calls, answer texts — without reaching for their phone.

However, just like Samsung phones, owners of Oppo, OnePlus, and Realme phones will have to wait for a software update that adds Phone Link support. As the features were announced alongside ColorOS 14, Oppo Find and Oppo Reno series owners are expected to get support for the feature when the update arrives, while OnePlus and Realme phones will have to wait for OxygenOS 14 and Realme UI 5.

A groundbreaking artificial intelligence tool called FastGlioma has been developed, enabling surgeons to detect residual cancerous brain tumours within 10 seconds during surgery. The innovation, detailed in a recent study in Nature, is seen as a significant advancement in neurosurgery, outperforming traditional tumour detection methods. Researchers from the University of Michigan and the University of California, San Francisco, led the study, highlighting its potential to improve surgical outcomes for patients with diffuse gliomas.

Todd Hollon, M.D., a neurosurgeon at the University of Michigan Health, described FastGlioma as a transformative diagnostic tool that provides a faster and more accurate method for identifying tumour remnants. He noted its ability to reduce reliance on current methods, such as intraoperative MRI or fluorescent imaging agents, which are often inaccessible or unsuitable for all tumour types.

Addressing Residual Tumours During Surgery

As per the study from Michigan Medicine – University of Michigan, residual tumours, which often resemble healthy brain tissue, are a common challenge in neurosurgery. Surgeons have traditionally struggled to differentiate between healthy brain and remaining cancerous tissue, leading to incomplete tumour removal. FastGlioma addresses this by combining high-resolution optical imaging with artificial intelligence to identify tumour infiltration rapidly and accurately.

In an international study, the model was tested on specimens from 220 patients with low- or high-grade diffuse gliomas. FastGlioma achieved an average accuracy of 92%, significantly outperforming conventional methods, which had a higher miss rate for high-risk tumour remnants. Co-senior author Shawn Hervey-Jumper, M.D., professor of neurosurgery at UCSF, emphasised its ability to enhance surgical precision while minimising the dependence on imaging agents or time-consuming procedures.

Future Applications in Cancer Surgery

FastGlioma is based on foundation models, a type of AI trained on vast datasets, allowing adaptation across various tasks. The model has shown potential for application in other cancers, including lung, prostate, and breast tumours, without requiring extensive retraining.

Aditya S. Pandey, M.D., chair of neurosurgery at the University of Michigan, affirmed its role in improving surgical outcomes globally, aligning with recommendations to integrate AI into cancer surgery. Researchers aim to expand its use to additional tumour types, potentially reshaping cancer treatment approaches worldwide.

OpenAI has appointed ex-Twitch boss Emmett Shear to lead the startup, replacing Sam Altman who will join the company’s top backer Microsoft to lead a new advanced AI research team, the CEO of the software giant said late on Sunday.

“We look forward to getting to know Emmett Shear and OAI’s new leadership team and working with them,” Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella posted on social media platform X. He added Microsoft remains committed to its partnership with OpenAI.

Shear was named interim CEO, a person briefed on the appointment told Reuters.

The decision not to reinstate Altman as CEO of the company behind ChatGPT has confounded efforts by investors and employees of the firm to steady the ship by bringing him back after the board fired him on Friday, a surprise move that rocked the tech world.

They fear his abrupt sacking could lead to a mass exodus of talent and impact an upcoming $86 billion share sale.

Nadella said Altman would join Microsoft to “lead a new advanced AI research team”.

Reuters earlier reported that Altman was discussing a possible return to OpenAI and changing the company’s governance structure, even as he considered launching a new AI venture.

Altman and Greg Brockman, who stepped down from the OpenAI board as chairman as part of the management shuffle, joined executives at the company’s headquarters on Sunday after then interim CEO Mira Murati told staff she invited Altman, The Information earlier reported on Sunday.

Nadella said Brockman would also join the software company.

Altman posted an image of himself on X on Sunday wearing an OpenAI guest badge with the caption: “first and last time i ever wear one of these.” In a separate post on X, he reshared Nadella’s message with a comment “the mission continues”.

Shear co-founded Twitch and had stepped down from the Amazon.com-owned live video streaming platform earlier this year.

Brockman quit over Altman’s firing on Friday. Their departures blindsided many employees who discovered the abrupt management change from an internal message and the company’s public blog.

Some researchers including Szymon Sidor have also left the company following the CEO change, two people familiar with the matter said. Sidor confirmed quitting.

The Information first reported the appointment of Shear as interim CEO.

Shortly after the internal announcement of Shear’s appointment, distraught employees “streamed out” of OpenAI headquarters in San Francisco, The Information reported.

Dozens of staffers internally announced they were quitting the company on Sunday night, it said, citing a person with knowledge of the situation.

OpenAI kicked off the generative AI craze a year ago by releasing ChatGPT. The chatbot became one of the world’s fastest-growing software applications.

Samsung is considering the creation of a new brand for some of its smartphones, while reserving the Galaxy brand for select models, according to a report. The South Korean tech firm currently launches new flagship Galaxy S and Galaxy Z series phones, as well as more affordable Galaxy A, Galaxy M, and Galaxy F models. The publication compares the potential brand segmentation to Hyundai’s decision to introduce a new top-end ‘Genesis’ brand, as part of the carmaker’s efforts to promote its premium image.

Samsung’s biggest competitor in several markets (including the US) is Apple, and while the latter only sells premium smartphones, the South Korean firm’s most affordable Galaxy M and Galaxy F series models as well as its high-end Galaxy Z and Galaxy S series handsets are all launched under the same brand.

For comparison, the company’s most affordable smartphone in India is the Samsung Galaxy A06, which starts at Rs. 9,999. Pricing for the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra and Galaxy Z Fold 6 begin at Rs. 1,21,999 and Rs. 1,44,999, respectively. On the other hand, Apple’s most affordable handset is the iPhone SE (2022) which costs Rs. 47,600, while the latest iPhone 16 Pro Max model starts at Rs. 1,44,900.

It’s worth noting that Samsung has yet to announce any plans to introduce a new smartphone brand to distinguish its premium handsets. The company is rolling out artificial intelligence (AI) features branded as Galaxy AI to several smartphones, including some the Galaxy A-series phones, and it is currently unclear how a change to the company’s branding could affect its software.
