Vaibhav Sooryavanshi reveals his mantra vs Jasprit Bumrah, Josh Hazlewood: Look at the ball, not the bowler

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is keeping things simple, even as the spotlight around him continues to grow. The 15-year-old, who has taken on some of the best fast bowlers in the world in recent games, says his approach does not change: watch the ball, not the bowler.

That clarity has been evident in back-to-back performances. The other day, it was Jasprit Bumrah. On Friday night, it was Josh Hazlewood. Different conditions, different challenges, same outcome. Bowlers with years of international experience were left searching for answers against a teenager who did not seem overawed by reputation.

Sooryavanshi’s 78 off just 26 balls powered Rajasthan Royals to a comfortable chase of 201 against Royal Challengers Bengaluru, with the target sealed with two overs to spare. It was not just the pace of the innings but the control he showed throughout that stood out.

“I try to execute what I practice and back my natural game. Yes, at the back of your mind, you know who the bowler (Bumrah or Hazlewood) is but you play the ball not the bowler,” Sooryavanshi said.

It may sound straightforward, but against bowlers who thrive on creating doubt, it is far from easy to execute.

Hazlewood tried the usual methods to contain an attacking batter. He went into the body, looked to reduce room, and forced Sooryavanshi to adjust. One such delivery climbed into him and cramped him for space. It was the kind of ball that often results in a dot or a mistimed shot. Instead, Sooryavanshi managed to free his hands and chopped it away for four.

What followed shifted the momentum completely. The next ball was lifted cleanly over mid-on, and then came a pick-up shot from outside off that sailed into the square-leg stands. The shots came quickly, but there was no sense of panic. Each stroke was controlled, with early reading of length and quick decision-making.

This has not been a one-off. Earlier in the season, Bumrah, regarded as one of the most complete T20 bowlers, had also been taken on with similar confidence. Where most batters show caution, Sooryavanshi has looked to counter. Of his 78 runs, 74 came in boundaries, eight fours and seven sixes, and he needed just 15 balls to get there. It was not just power hitting, but clean striking and precise timing.

Even as attention around him grows, Sooryavanshi insists on staying grounded. He credits his father Sanjiv and Rajasthan Royals support staff member Romi Bhinder for keeping him focused.

“They always tell me that it is a long journey and my focus should only and only be on the game,” he said.

Despite the match-winning contribution, he admitted he was not fully satisfied after getting out on 78.

“My thinking is that had I been around, I could have scored 20 more runs which would be beneficial for the team,” Sooryavanshi said at the post-match presentation ceremony.

That mindset reflects in how he is approaching his career so far. While there is often talk of young players facing a dip in their second season once opposition teams study them more closely, Sooryavanshi has continued to build on his strong debut year.

His first season as a 14-year-old had already marked him out as a player to watch. This season, he looks more assured, adding consistency to his natural game.

In a format where a strike rate of 200 is considered elite, Sooryavanshi is pushing the tempo significantly higher. The method, however, remains unchanged.

For now, whether it is Bumrah or Hazlewood, the approach stays the same. Watch the ball, play on merit, and let the rest follow.

Dacoit review: This Adivi Sesh-Mrunal Thakur starrer is a missed opportunity in the guise of a thriller

Dacoit

Director: Shaneil Deo

Cast: Adivi Sesh, Mrunal Thakur, Anurag Kashyap

Rating: ★★

Situation: bullets slicing through the air, an entire police force closing in, a rifle your only defence, and your partner right beside you. High stakes, right? Not in the world of Dacoit. Here, right in the middle of what should be chaos, everyone politely pauses for a five-minute conversation between the hero and heroine. The cops hold their fire. The hero delivers his lines like it’s a stage play, not a shootout. Urgency takes a backseat, drama takes over, ‘jaanu’ arrives before ‘jaan’.

Dacoit review: Adivi Sesh and Mrunal Thakur in the film.
Dacoit review: Adivi Sesh and Mrunal Thakur in the film.

Cinematic liberty, did someone say? Yeah, that can be taken when the rest of the film entertains you enough to stay seated.

Directed by Shaneil Deo (and written by Deo and Sesh), the story kicks off with a convicted murderer, Hari (Adivi Sesh), breaking out of jail and planning to take revenge on Juliet (Mrunal Thakur), his former girlfriend who betrayed him and aided in his conviction years earlier. Hari plans to loot a hospital and get Juliet arrested for it. However, circumstances play out differently- and there is a twist in the offing. What happens forms the rest of the plot.

A tried but not tested plot

Dacoit’s biggest flaw is how relentlessly generic its storytelling feels. This is a plot we’ve seen far too often: two people fall in love, one walks away, the other seeks revenge, they reunite, sparks reignite, and everything unfolds exactly as expected. The first half takes its own sweet time setting up the romance between Mrunal and Sesh, but in doing so, it focuses on too many phases of their relationship and loses focus. Set in the COVID times, the film lacks conviction. There’s an entire track about corruption which was headed nowhere ultimately.

The second half does find some emotional footing, with Sesh and Mrunal making a sincere effort to sell the gravity of the situation. At times, it works. But just as often, the film slips into such absurdity that you find yourself chuckling despite yourself. Two people go about looting hospitals as if it were as effortless as plucking a mango off a tree. The film, to its credit, is somewhat self-aware. A character even calls out this very exaggeration about the heist situation within the narrative. Anurag Kashyap has nothing much to do with a half-baked role as a cop.

The music of this bilingual by Bheems Ceciroleo doesn’t make much impact, with Touch Buddy featuring Jonita Gandhi and Pawan Singh being the weakest of the lot. The action isn’t as exhilarating as it should have been for a thriller film.

Overall, Dacoit keeps threatening to take off but never quite leaves the runway. It has all the noise, but none of the lift. By the end, you are not on the edge of your seat, just mildly restless, wondering what could have been if the film had matched its own ambitions.

Rajat Patidar forced to self-introspect after Vaibhav Sooryavanshi treats Hazlewood like Bumrah, ends RCB winning streak

Honestly, it’s getting out of hand now. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is unstoppable. Yes. We have said it before. We know. But thanks to this kid, words and expressions are falling short to describe his freakiness. Unbelievable is the word, perhaps. At just 15, the world is at his feet. Those who felt Sooryavanshi would be figured out this year, stop passing verdicts on cricket. It’s not your thing. Three sleeps ago, it was Jasprit Bumrah. And tonight, it was Josh Hazlewood and Bhuvneshwar Kumar. These are world-class, champion pacers. Giants of the game. And Sooryavanshi bludgeons them like they’re net bowlers, his assault helping the Rajasthan Royals make a mockery of the Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s total of 201 after 20 overs.

Poor Rajat Patidar was left shellshocked. He batted out of his skin to lift his team from the depths of 125/7 to 201/8. Less than two hours later, his effort was overshadowed by a player 17 years younger to him as Sooryavanshi blasted 78 off just 26 deliveries. 26. For a moment, Chris Gayle’s record for the fastest-ever IPL century looked in danger. Such ruthless was Sooryavanshi’s assault. In fact, the impact was such as Patidar almost went into trance, appearing lost as he gave the teenager his flowers.

“The way we started in the powerplay, to get to 200, is a positive sign for us. The way their batters, especially Vaibhav, batted in the powerplay, it made the difference. The way we are batting in last few matches was brilliant but lots of learnings from this game,” a shaken Patidar, almost self introspecting, said after the match.

Jurel can’t believe how Sooryavanshi can hit like that

Sooryavanshi’s wicket 22 short of what would have been his second IPL ton was a turning point as RR endured a collapse to lose three wickets for nine runs. But holding up one end was Dhruv Jurel, who showed nerves to steel and took RR home by staying unbeaten on 81 off 43 balls. Still, he didn’t win the Player of the Match award, with Sooryavanshi’s fireworks making it impossible for the commentators to select anyone but him for the honour.

“We just cannot believe how someone can hit it like that. We think we can not hit like that. He is a great talent. Best is to not say anything to him and we feel good that he is in our team,” he said about his teammate.

As did the winning captain Riyan Parag, who summed up just how loved Sooryavanshi is within the team. “Everyone loves him and having him around. He likes eating stuff and going out. We try to make that available for him. He is still a kid. And he loves batting.”

NEW DELHI: Rajasthan Royals produced a stunning batting display as young sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi powered them to a record-breaking start against Royal Challengers Bengaluru in IPL 2026. Chasing 202, RR raced to 97/1 in the Powerplay, their highest-ever total in the first six overs and one of the best in IPL history. Sooryavanshi, who was dismissed for 78 runs off 26, led the charge inside the powerplay with a blistering 57 off just 18 balls, while Dhruv Jurel supported him with a quick 27 off 10 balls.

The sixth over alone produced 24 runs, underlining RR’s dominance. This effort placed RR among the top Powerplay scores in IPL history, just behind some explosive totals by Sunrisers Hyderabad and Kolkata Knight Riders. Highest Powerplay totals in IPL

  • 125/0 – SRH vs DC, Delhi, 2024
  • 107/0 – SRH vs LSG, Hyderabad, 2024
  • 105/0 – KKR vs RCB, Bengaluru, 2017
  • 100/2 – CSK vs PBKS, Wankhede, 2014
  • 97/1 – RR vs RCB, Guwahati, 2026*
  • 94/1 – SRH vs RR, Hyderabad, 2025

The aggressive approach ensured RR took early control of the chase, putting immense pressure on RCB’s bowling attack.Earlier, RCB had posted 201/8, largely thanks to a fighting knock from captain Rajat Patidar, who scored 63 off 40 balls. Walking in during a collapse, Patidar steadied the innings and kept the scoreboard ticking despite wickets falling at the other end. Virat Kohli had provided a quick start with 32 off 16 balls but fell trying to accelerate.RR’s bowlers, led by Jofra Archer and Ravi Bishnoi, triggered a middle-order collapse, reducing RCB to 94/6 at one stage. Bishnoi’s variations proved crucial, while Brijesh Sharma impressed with key breakthroughs. However, a late surge from Impact Sub Venkatesh Iyer, who smashed 29 off 15 balls including 21 runs in the final over, pushed RCB past the 200-run mark. Despite the late flourish, the total appeared slightly below par on a surface offering bounce but also value for shots. In response, RR’s fearless approach in the Powerplay, spearheaded by Sooryavanshi, turned the game decisively in their favour, scripting a memorable night and showcasing the arrival of a new batting star in the IPL.

Ranjith granted bail

The court has put some conditions on Ranjith along with the grant of bail. It directed Ranjith to surrender his passport, not to leave Ernakulam district, and not to enter the crime scene in Fort Kochi where the film shooting was held. He was ordered to execute a bond of ₹1 lakh and furnish two solvent sureties of the like amount. The court also directed Ranjith to appear before the investigating officer every Monday for the next three months or until the charge sheet in the case is filed.

Ranjith, who is lodged at Ernakulam Sub Jail, will be released soon. When the bail plea was considered, the prosecution opposed it, claiming that he had not cooperated with the investigation. However, the defence counsel submitted that Ranjith had neither objected to his arrest nor to custodial interrogation earlier. The defence also cited his health condition while seeking bail. Taking into account his health condition and the status of the investigation, the court granted him bail.

More details

Earlier, following his remand, the filmmaker spoke to the press and claimed that the accusations against him were ‘false’. He also told reporters that he would be able to prove his innocence in the case while being taken inside the sub-jail in Kochi. Ranjith’s lawyer has said that they are preparing to move a bail plea in court.

Kochi City Police Commissioner S Kaliraj Mahesh Kumar said that a Special Investigation Team was formed after the actress filed a complaint. The allegations were discreetly verified before Ranjith was arrested.

The case pertains to allegations that the filmmaker sexually assaulted the complainant during a film shoot. Police had earlier registered a First Information Report (FIR) on March 28 based on the actress’s statement.

An actress who was working with him filed a complaint alleging that he attempted to sexually assault her on a film set. He was taken into custody from the Idukki district.

In her complaint, the actress alleged that Ranjith invited her to a caravan during the film’s shoot and attempted to assault her. Based on her statement, a case has been registered under multiple sections, including outraging the modesty of a woman, sexual assault, wrongful confinement and making obscene gestures.
