Billionaire investor Ackman makes bn bid for Universal Music Group | Music News

Billionaire investor Bill Ackman’s Pershing Square has proposed a takeover of Universal Music Group in a $64bn deal, the latest twist in his nearly five-year quest for the music label giant.

Pershing Square proposed a cash-and-shares offer on Tuesday through its acquisition vehicle that values Universal Music at about 30.40 euros ($35) per share, a 78 percent premium to the last closing price of 17.10 euros ($20), making the deal worth 55.75 billion euros ($64.31bn).

Universal Music Group (UMG) – the company behind international superstars, including Taylor Swift, Billie Eilish and Kendrick Lamar – is expected to move its listing to New York from Amsterdam, paving the way for more investors, including index funds, to own the company and ultimately lead to more robust earnings and a higher valuation.

Universal Music declined a Reuters news agency request for comment.

For Ackman, one of the world’s most voluble investors, who cemented his fame and fortune as an activist investor, forcefully pushing corporate America to adopt changes, this is a far friendlier approach, investors and industry analysts said.

Even as the music industry is flourishing, UMG’s share price has lagged, something Ackman is pledging to fix with this proposed deal.

Ackman’s letter to Universal Music Group’s board carried a mixed tone, at times complimentary of current management, led by chairman and chief executive Lucian Grainge, and critical of the company’s “underutilized balance sheet” and handling of its 2.7 billion euro ($3.1bn) investment in Spotify Technology.

Fears of AI disrupting the music industry have played a role in UMG’s lacklustre performance. Its share of the music market has been sliding, and streaming growth is decelerating, Wells Fargo analysts noted. In March, UMG delayed its plans for a US listing.

Nonetheless, Ackman will need the support of UMG’s top shareholders – Bollore Group, which holds an 18.5 percent stake, and Vivendi, which owns 13.4 percent – to push through any transaction. China’s Tencent is a significant shareholder. French billionaire Vincent Bollore’s family controls 80 percent of UMG’s voting rights.

Old target

Ackman first flirted with Universal Music Group in 2021, when his Pershing Square Tontine Holdings, a shell corporation created to take a private company public, zeroed in on its target. But Ackman shelved the complex deal in the wake of heavy US regulatory scrutiny. Instead, Pershing Square became one of UMG’s biggest investors in 2021, and Ackman sat on its board until last year.

Post transaction, Ackman said Grainge should remain Universal Music’s chief executive.

Ackman said he and former Hollywood super-agent Michael Ovitz met with Grainge over dinner “a couple of weeks ago” to discuss the potential merger.

“Lucian encouraged us to send it in,” Ackman said.

Ackman proposed adding new directors, including Ovitz – who shepherded the careers of Madonna and Michael Jackson – who would become the board chair. Additionally, two representatives from Pershing Square would get seats, he said, not saying yet whether he would be one of the directors.

Shares of UMG, which is listed in Amsterdam, were up 13 percent on Tuesday, while Bollore Group climbed 5 percent. Shares in Vivendi were up more than 10 percent.

Pershing bought a 10 percent stake in UMG from Vivendi ahead of its 2021 Amsterdam IPO and has since repeatedly pressed for a New York listing, arguing it would boost UMG’s share price and liquidity.

Pershing currently has a 4.7 percent stake, making it UMG’s fourth-biggest shareholder.

UMG’s shares have lost almost a third of their value since its IPO.

Even as global music revenues grow year after year, UMG and other major labels, like Sony and Warner Music, are scrambling to stay competitive as streaming services from Spotify, Amazon, Apple and Deezer take an ever greater share.

They are now also contending with disruptions brought on by the expansion of AI – from copyright disputes to the advent of song-generating AI tools – that threaten to upend how music is created, consumed and monetised.

One survey last year found that a staggering 97 percent of listeners could distinguish between AI-generated and human-composed songs.

Under Tuesday’s proposal, Pershing’s SPARC Holdings would merge with UMG, and the new entity would become a Nevada corporation listed on the New York Stock Exchange.

Comedian Samay Raina has opened up about the controversy surrounding India’s Got Latent, taking sharp digs at critics including Sunil Pal, B Praak, and Mukesh Khanna, while defending his style of comedy in his latest special Still Alive.

‘Playing a clean character is unnatural for me’

Using his earlier Kaun Banega Crorepati anecdote as context, Samay explained how his comedic identity is rooted in irreverent humour. “Playing a clean character is unnatural for me,” he implied, stressing that toning himself down feels inauthentic. He connected this to the backlash around India’s Got Latent, particularly involving Ranveer Allahbadia, aka BeerBiceps. “Ek clean banda kabhi kabhi h*rami nahi ban sakta internet pe,” he said.Drawing a metaphor, he added, “Non-vegetarian veg kha sakta hai, vegetarian non-veg khayega ulti hi karega,” explaining why audiences often reject sudden shifts in personality.

Opens up on ‘India’s Got Latent’ fallout

Talking about the controversy, Samay claimed that an FIR was filed against Ranveer Allahbadia for stepping outside his established image. He jokingly called him “the monk who sold my Ferrari,” blaming him for derailing the show.He further explained that the backlash stemmed from breaking a persona built over years. “Hum Kashmiri cross fire me hi marte hain,” he said, adding, “It broke me like anything,” referring to his decision to take the show down in India.Samay also revealed that he received support from Pakistan after the show was removed.Describing India’s Got Latent as raw and largely unscripted, he said, “Bhot gandi gandi baatein keh dete the” to be funny, while adding that he tried to “play safe” by carefully editing episodes and interacting with panelists after shoots.

Takes digs at critics and industry

Recalling the reactions, Samay said, “Sab aa gaye the khane hamko — politician, celebrities, Sunil Pal,” adding that Sunil advised him to learn from Kapil Sharma, who he joked was “khud agle episode me aa rahe the.”He also took digs at others, including B Praak and Mukesh Khanna, quipping, “Shaktiman aa gaya tha yaar. Shaktiman se kaise ladenge,” while criticising what he called attempts to gain limelight during the controversy.Commenting on how the issue escalated, Samay made a sharp remark: “India is not a platform to showcase your art.” Concluding the show, Samay said he couldn’t have asked for a better end to India’s Got Latent Season 1, while hinting that Season 2 is likely to drop on YouTube soon.

Jos Buttler IPL comeback Gujarat Titans focus technique mental reset T20 World Cup struggles

Jos Buttler has struggled in 2026, particularly in T20 internationals. His T20 World Cup 2026 performance was below par, scoring just 87 runs in eight innings. Overall, he has accumulated 168 runs in 11 T20Is this year, averaging 15.27 with a strike rate under 125.

Despite this, Buttler is aiming for a comeback in the IPL with Gujarat Titans, relying on his experience and skills. He had a strong debut season with GT, scoring 538 runs in 14 matches. This season, he has started with scores of 38 off 33 balls against Punjab Kings and 26 off 14 against Rajasthan Royals.

Speaking on the For the Love of Cricket podcast with Stuart Broad, Buttler said the break after the T20 World Cup has been beneficial. He is concentrating on his technique and preparation to ensure he is well positioned at the point of ball release.

“I feel good actually. Feel good with the break after the [T20] World Cup, just get to put the bat down and have some space. Basically, just focusing on myself, and on my set-up and making sure when the ball is released I am in a good position – which I do,” Buttler said.

He added that he wants to convert good starts into match-winning innings. “And then just trusting my game, trusting my experience, and trying to let it happen. I’ve got in some good positions, like getting in with a couple of starts. You always want to go on and make those match-winning contributions, but it’s nice to be feeling calm in the middle and in a good space. Hopefully that can keep that going,” he said.

‘NO MENTAL BLOCKS’

Buttler emphasised the importance of staying focused on the present rather than past performances. He is careful to avoid mental blocks related to specific bowlers or venues.

“Every day you start on nought and that’s kind of where I’ve been looking at,” Buttler explained. “Just looking forward, not thinking of the past, looking forward to the games, and just trying to be measured and not reading too much into past successes or past failures.

“Sometimes you can – and I have certainly done it at times – get sort of a mental block against a certain bowler or a certain venue, and say ‘this doesn’t work for me, this ground.’ Or ‘why can’t I score runs at any ground’ or that kind of mentality. I’m trying to be really distant from that,” he added.

Gujarat Titans have lost their opening two matches and will look to recover when they face Delhi Capitals on 8 April.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi wins the Jasprit Bumrah battle, Rajasthan Royals the rain-hit tie

MUMBAI: For the second straight day, rain played spoilsport in the Indian Premier League. On Monday, heavy showers in Kolkata had forced the Kolkata Knight Riders versus Punjab Kings game to be abandoned after just 3.2 overs.

But luckily, at Guwahati on Tuesday, the weather gods relented to allow an 11-overs a side game between hosts Rajasthan Royals (RR) and Mumbai Indians (MI).

The spectators who had stayed back despite the frustrating delay, finally had good news at 9:28pm when the players started wandering onto the playing area to go through their warm-up routines.

The covers were off soon to raise hopes of a juicy proposition of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi versus Jasprit Bumrah contest finally taking place.

The 15-year-old Royals opener has taken the game by storm but it was going to be the first time in professional cricket that he would face Bumrah.

MI skipper Hardik Pandya, however, didn’t start with Bumrah, instead giving the new ball to Deepak Chahar. The last time the two teams played, in 2025, Chahar had taken out Sooryavanshi for a two-ball duck, hence it was a good match-up.

But MI were pushed on to the backfoot immediately as Yashasvi Jaiswal took first strike and smashed the daylights out of Chahar, hammering him for 22 runs.

The fans didn’t have to wait long for the Sooryavanshi versus Bumrah contest. After the first over hammering, MI had to go to their best bowler—Bumrah.

It turned out to be a dramatic start—first ball against Bumrah, the dashing young batter had hit a six. The southpaw has underlined his potential with numerous knocks last season, and here he was proving that reputations didn’t matter to him, just the spot where the ball landed.

Bumrah had pitched the first ball in his range and he nonchalantly deposited it over the long-on fence. On the fourth ball, when they faced off again, Sooryavanshi went massive again. Bumrah bowled off-pace and into the track just outside off, and the batter picked it up and dumped it over deep square leg.

It showed that the player was unfazed, not in awe of even the great bowler. At the other end, Jaiswal held centre stage with hitting of the highest order. Jaiswal ensured there was no pressure on the young Sooryavanshi, playing a virtuoso knock of 77 not out (32b; 10×4, 4×6) to power RR to a total of 150/3.

The RR opening pair seized the advantage in the truncated game with a flying start. Jaiswal and Sooryavanshi raised RR’s fifty in 2.4 overs. It was 58/0 after three overs, Jaiswal batting on 37 (11b, 4×4 & 3×6) and Sooryavanshi on 20 (7b, 3×6).

Needing to score at a run rate of close to 14, MI had to match the start of RR. But nothing went right for the visitors. Ryan Rickleton was out in the first over, Suryakumar Yadav in the second over and Rohit Sharma in the third to leave MI’s innings in tatters at 25/3 after three overs.

When Hardik Pandya and Tilak Varma both fell in the fifth over, it was RR’s game to lose from there. MI’s poor start showed there was some help for the bowlers with rain in the air. The RR openers had batted brilliantly to take the conditions out of equation.

Hardik, who was back after missing the previous game due to illness, was the only MI pacer to hold his own against the marauding RR left-hand pair, conceding just four runs in the fourth over.

For the fifth over, MI went to Shardul Thakur. Sooryavanshi gave him the same treatment as he did on his IPL debut, clobbering the first ball for six. Thakur landed the ball in the slot outside off and the youngster carved it over cover. Thakur managed to foxed him into hitting straight to deep cover fielder Tilak Varma to end the opening stand of 80, but the damage had been done.

The teenager again had everyone marvelling at his hitting ability with a power-packed 14-ball 39 made at a strike rate of 278.57, which included five sixes.

Jaiswal carried on, playing his most dominating innings of this IPL. He completed his fifty in style, going back and across to Pandya and cracking a four through point. It also raised RR’s hundred in 7.3 overs. The 23-ball fifty included six fours and three sixes.

Brief scores: Rajasthan Royals 150/3 (11 overs) (Y Jaiswal 77, V Sooryavanshi 39, AN Ghazanfar 2/21). Mumbai Indians ( R Bishnoi 2/25). RR won by 27 runs.

Rivals OpenAI, Anthropic PBC, and Alphabet Inc.’s Google have begun working together to try to clamp down on Chinese competitors extracting results from cutting-edge US AI models to gain an edge in the global AI race.

Only a handful of countries—the United States, the Netherlands and Japan—have specialised tools required to produce AI chips.
Only a handful of countries—the United States, the Netherlands and Japan—have specialised tools required to produce AI chips.

The firms are sharing information through the Frontier Model Forum, an industry non-profit that the three tech firms founded with Microsoft Corp. in 2023, to detect so-called adversarial distillation attempts that violate their terms of service, according to people familiar with the matter.

The rare collaboration underscores the severity of a concern raised by US AI firms that some users, especially in China, are creating imitation versions of their products that could undercut them on price and siphon away customers while posing a national security risk. US officials have estimated that unauthorised distillation costs Silicon Valley labs billions of dollars in annual profit, according to a person familiar with the findings who described them on the condition of anonymity.

OpenAI confirmed it’s part of the information sharing effort on adversarial distillation through the Frontier Model Forum and pointed to a recent memo it sent to Congress on the practice, where it accused Chinese firm DeepSeek of trying to “free-ride on the capabilities developed by OpenAI and other US frontier labs”.

Google, Anthropic, and the Frontier Model Forum declined to comment.

Distillation is a technique where an older “teacher” AI model is used to train a newer, “student,” model that replicates the capabilities of the earlier system — often at a much lower cost than producing an original model from scratch. Some forms of distillation are widely accepted and even encouraged by AI labs, such as when companies create smaller, more efficient versions of their own models, or allow outside developers to use distillation to build non-competitive technology.

Yet distillation has been controversial when used by third parties—particularly in adversary nations like China or Russia—to replicate proprietary work without authorisation. Leading US AI labs have warned that foreign adversaries could use the technique to develop AI models stripped of safety guardrails, such as limits that would prevent users from creating a deadly pathogen.

Most models made by Chinese labs are open weight, meaning that parts of the underlying AI system are publicly available for users to freely download and run on their own platforms, and therefore cheaper to use. That poses an economic challenge for US AI companies that have kept their models proprietary, betting that customers will pay for access to their products and help offset the hundreds of billions of dollars they’ve spent on data centres and other infrastructure.

Distillation first drew significant scrutiny in January 2025 in the weeks after DeepSeek’s surprise release of the R1 reasoning model that took the AI world by storm. Soon after, Microsoft and OpenAI investigated whether the Chinese startup had improperly exfiltrated large amounts of data from the US firm’s models to create R1, Bloomberg previously reported.

In February, OpenAI warned US lawmakers that DeepSeek had continued to use increasingly sophisticated tactics to extract results from US models, despite heightened efforts to prevent misuse of its products. OpenAI claimed in its memo to the House Select Committee on China that DeepSeek was relying on distillation to develop a new version of its breakthrough chatbot.

Information-sharing by US AI companies about adversarial distillation echoes a standard practice in the cybersecurity industry, where firms regularly swap data on attacks and adversaries’ tactics as a way to strengthen network defenses. By working together, the AI firms are similarly seeking to more effectively detect the practice, identify who’s responsible and try to prevent unauthorized users from succeeding.

Trump administration officials have signaled their openness to fostering information sharing among AI companies to rein in adversarial distillation. The AI Action Plan unveiled by President Donald Trump last year called for the creation of an information sharing and analysis center, in part for this purpose.

For now, information sharing on distillation remains limited due to AI companies’ uncertainty about what can be shared under existing antitrust guidance to counter the competitive threat from China, according to people familiar with the matter. The firms would benefit from greater clarity from the US government, the people said.

Distillation has ranked as a top concern among American AI developers since DeepSeek rattled global markets in early 2025 with its R1 release. Highly capable open-source models continue to proliferate in China, and many in the industry are watching closely for a major upgrade to DeepSeek’s model.

Last year, Anthropic blocked Chinese-controlled companies from using its Claude chatbot model, and in February it identified three Chinese AI labs—DeepSeek, Moonshot, and MiniMax—as illicitly extracting the model’s capability via distillation. This year, Anthropic said the threat “extends beyond any single company or region” and poses a national security risk, since distilled models often lack safety guardrails designed to prevent bad actors from using AI tools for malicious activities.

Google has published a blog saying it identified an increase in model extraction attempts. The three US AI labs have not yet provided evidence showing how much of China’s model innovation is reliant on distillation, but they note that the prevalence of attacks can be measured based on volumes of large-scale data requests.

Allu Arjun, Atlee, Deepika Padukone film's title to be announced soon; fans guess everything from creatures to aliens

Fans speculate AA 22 X A 6’s genre

Given that many did not expect the film’s first poster to look like this, fans began speculating about the film’s genre. “Godzilla emaina undha bhAAi (Brother, does your film have Godzilla?)” joked one fan, as another commented, “Idhi bhAAi hand aa? (Is this brother’s hand?)” referring to Arjun. Another wrote, “Edho expect chesa, idi creature film aa? (I expected something else. Is this a creature film?)” in surprise, while many asked Grok to guess the creature in the poster. Some even speculated that the furry creature in the poster would be the film’s antagonist or that it was a werewolf hand.

Former England cricketer Kevin Pietersen said he would like to become a mentor for Chennai Super Kings, adding that the city’s location would make it easier for him to travel to the Maldives. His comment was a reference to his travel during IPL 2025.The exchange started on Tuesday morning when a CSK fan asked the franchise on social media to consider Pietersen for the mentor’s role.“Dear CSK please bring KP as a Mentor,” the user posted.“Yes please. It is closer to Maldives. Easier travel for me,” Pietersen replied. After his reply, Delhi Capitals joined the conversation and tagged KL Rahul. Pietersen and Rahul had built a rapport last season and were often seen joking with each other.

What the US military could do if Iran fails to meet Trump’s ultimatum

But Trump has backed himself into a corner with threats that the US military can’t feasibly carry out in one fell swoop, military experts and analysts told the BBC. And they warn that a new round of attacks, no matter how large, is unlikely to force the Iranian regime to quickly agree to a ceasefire.
