Sonam Wangchuk’s hunger strike live: CJP’s Dipika alleges attack on activist at Jantar Mantar, says ‘object thrown’

Sonam Wangchuk Hunger Strike Live: Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk during a protest organized by the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi on Friday, July 17, 2026.

Sonam Wangchuk’s hunger strike live: Academician and climate activist Sonam Wangchuk entered the 21st day of her indefinite hunger strike on Saturday. A day earlier, the activist had said she had lost about 20 per cent of her body but was determined to continue the protest demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over alleged irregularities in the NEET UG exam.

In a video message released at the end of the 20th day of his fast, Wangchuk appealed to people across the country to join the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP)’s proposed “Chalo Sansad” march on July 20, arguing that public participation would decide the strength and success of the movement.

Talking about his health, Wangchuk acknowledged the physical damage caused by his prolonged fast, but said he was not backing down.

Wangchuk said, “Yes, I am still alive. Twenty percent of my body is gone. After the fat, the muscles are gone. After that will go the organs. Finally the brain. The time has not come yet.”

The workers joined the agitation at Jantar Mantar on June 28 and have been on an indefinite hunger strike since then. The protests began on June 20 and have now entered their 28th day.

AISA students sit on hunger strike

As the movement continues, concerns about the health of the protesters have intensified. On the 28th day of the protest, the condition of three All India Students Association (AISA) activists sitting on an indefinite hunger strike deteriorated further, with doctors recommending immediate hospitalization of one of them.

AISA said three of its workers – Neha, Ameen and Manish – have completed 20 days on Friday on their indefinite hunger strike.

In a statement, the students’ organization said Neha’s blood sugar level had fallen to critically low levels, following which doctors advised her to end her fast and get her immediately admitted to hospital to prevent further deterioration in her condition, news agency PTI reported.

According to AISA, Amen’s uric acid levels have increased dangerously and his body weight has reduced by about 14 percent. Meanwhile, Manish has lost more than 10 kg during the protests and is reportedly experiencing near-conscious states, requiring constant assistance even for routine activities.

opposition support

Wangchuk and other fasting protesters have also been visited by several opposition leaders due to their deteriorating health.

Congress leader Pawan Kheda, NCP (SP) MP Supriya Sule and other opposition figures visited the protest site on Friday and urged the Center to initiate talks with the agitators.

A day earlier, AAP convenor Arvind Kejriwal, SP MP Dimple Yadav and farmer leader Rakesh Tikait had also met Wangchuk and expressed support for the ongoing movement.

Sonam Wangchuk’s hunger strike live: Activist compares Jantar Mantar movement to onion price protest

Sonam Wangchuk’s hunger strike live: Answering the question whether the movement could ultimately lead to accountability or even Dharmendra Pradhan’s resignation, Sonam Wangchuk said mass movements in India have often achieved results that initially seemed impossible.

“I ask you – do the people of India love the lives and education of their children more, or the onion?” He said, referring to past instances when governments had to face serious public backlash over rising onion prices.

He argued that if public anger over rising onion prices could affect political fortunes, a movement focused on students and education could also bring about change.
