TMC crisis LIVE: MP Kakoli Ghosh, 19 rebels offer support to NDA in fresh blow to Mamata; Another party leader arrested

TMC crisis live updates: TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee arrives for India Bloc meeting in Delhi on Monday

TMC crisis live updates: Former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is facing her biggest challenge yet to keep her party – Trinamool Congress (TMC) united after losing the state to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the recently concluded assembly elections. Mamata Banerjee’s position as the head of the party which has been in power for three consecutive terms is under threat with the break-out of MLAs and MPs in one internal shock after another.

Earlier MLA Ritabrata Banerjee had last week staked claim as the leader of opposition in the state assembly with the support of 58 MLAs, now Member of Parliament (MP) Kakoli Ghosh has openly expressed her desire to break away from the support of 19 rebel MPs and support the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA).

-Speaker Rathindra Nath Bose last week recognized 58 rebel TMC MLAs led by MLA Ritabrata Banerjee as the main opposition group. The rebels have accused the party leadership of working in an authoritarian manner and have openly challenged the role of TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee.

-In the above backdrop, Mamata Banerjee faces a fresh challenge in her urban political set-up as there is uncertainty over the future of senior leaders holding key mayoral posts as the party’s Firhad Hakim and Krishna Chakraborty resigned from Kolkata and Bidhannagar municipal corporations last week.

-In a fresh blow to Mamata Banerjee, at least 14 MLAs led by TMC MP Kakoli Ghosh met in Delhi and discussed secession in the presence of Bengal Chief Minister and BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari. About three kilometers away from where party chief Mamata Banerjee was attending the Indian National Development Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) meeting, rebel TMC MPs met for two hours at the house of Union minister and BJP observer for Bengal elections Bhupendra Yadav. In the evening the group met again at the residence of four-time Birbhum MP Shatabdi Roy.

-Barasat MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar said that the rebel group has decided to support the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). An earlier HT report quoted the four-time MP, who resigned from all party posts last week, as saying, “Around 20 TMC MPs, including me, have decided to support the NDA for the development of Bengal. We have decided to write to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and formally support the NDA.”

-A fresh blow to the TMC came on Monday when party leader Jahangir Khan was arrested near the India-Nepal border in an extortion case, police said. The arrest comes after Khan had reportedly been evading law enforcement agencies for several days amid multiple criminal investigations.

TMC crisis LIVE: How split will boost NDA’s strength in Parliament as rebel MPs look to join BJP-led alliance

TMC crisis LIVE: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which leads the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), can expect easy passage of key bills in the Lok Sabha as 20 Trinamool Congress (TMC) MPs on Monday conveyed their decision to join the alliance as a separate group. In the Rajya Sabha, where the NDA is already in majority, the party is set to gain one more seat as TMC’s Sukhendu Shekhar Roy has resigned from the Upper House.

The increased strength in the Lok Sabha will help the ruling coalition pass contentious bills, including the delimitation bill, which will pave the way for creating new constituencies and increasing the number of seats in the Lok Sabha, a prerequisite for the implementation of 33% reservation for women in legislatures. Other important bills that require the government’s support are the 129th Constitutional Amendment Bill, 2024, and the Union Territory Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2026, which seeks to hold simultaneous elections, which are currently being examined by a joint parliamentary committee.
