The attack happened 23 nautical miles (43 kilometers) northeast of Qatar’s capital, Doha, the UKMTO said.

There were no reported casualties, it said.

The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations centre said a bulk carrier had reported being hit 23 nautical miles northeast of Doha by an “unknown projectile”.

“There was a small fire that has been extinguished, there are no casualties. There is no reported environmental impact,” the agency said. (AFP)

Saudi Aramco reported first-quarter profit that surpassed analysts’ expectations following a war-induced rise in prices of oil and refined fuels.

Adjusted net income rose 26% to almost 126 billion riyals ($33.6 billion) in the quarter compared with a year earlier, according to a statement Sunday. That beat analysts’ profit expectations of 109 billion riyals.

The earnings reflect an increase in oil prices in March — when global benchmark Brent rose more than 43% — as Iran effectively closed the Strait of Hormuz following US and Israeli attacks. Saudi Arabia, which was ramping up exports before the war started, quickly redirected some shipments to an alternative port on the Red Sea within days of the conflict starting.

Oil prices have risen to four-year highs in recent weeks and have stayed near $100 a barrel as tensions around the Strait of Hormuz continue to deepen what the International Energy Agency described as the biggest supply disruption in history. US Iran war LIVE updates: A large oil slick has been detected in the Persian Gulf near Kharg Island, Iran’s main crude export hub, raising fresh concerns about the state of its oil infrastructure amid rising regional tensions and shipping disruptions, The New York Times reported.

Satellite images reviewed by the newspaper show the slick spreading off the island’s western coast, a key node in Iran’s export network. According to Orbital EOS, a global oil spill monitoring service cited in the report, the spill had expanded to over 20 square miles by Thursday.

Under the plan, Iran would commit to not developing a nuclear weapon and suspend all uranium enrichment for at least 12 years. It would also be required to transfer its estimated 440 kg stockpile of uranium enriched to 60 percent, according to US media reports, says Al Jazeera.

In return, the United States would ease sanctions in phases, release billions of dollars in frozen Iranian assets, and lift its naval blockade of Iranian ports.

That’s after Trump told reporters at the White House on Friday he expected a response “tonight.” Asked if Iran was intentionally delaying the process, he said “we’ll find out soon enough.”

“We’ll go a different route if everything doesn’t get signed up, buttoned up,” Trump said. “We may go back to Project Freedom if things don’t happen,” he added, referring to the brief US effort to break Iran’s maritime stranglehold and escort ships through the strait, “but it’ll be Project Freedom Plus, meaning Project Freedom plus other things.”
