US-Iran war live updates: US expects Iranian response soon amid clashes in Strait of Hormuz

US-Iran war live updates: The United States said it expects Iran to respond to its latest proposal to immediately end its hostilities, as clashes in the Strait of Hormuz threaten to further tear down a months-long ceasefire. Iran has still given no indication whether it will accept President Donald Trump’s plan sent on Wednesday, which proposes that the Islamic Republic reopen the strait and that the US end the blockade of Iranian ports next month, Bloomberg reports.

Tehran’s response is “under review,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Ismail Baghai told the semi-official Tasnim news agency, without giving a timeline.

Trump told reporters at the White House late Friday that he still expected a response “tonight.” Asked whether Iran was deliberately slowing down the process, he said, “We will find out soon.”

The one-page proposal implies Iran’s acceptance would end a 10-week war that has killed thousands across the Middle East and sent energy prices soaring, though the two sides would still need to negotiate an agreement on Iran’s nuclear program.

UN chief calls on all sides to observe ceasefire

Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed concern over the reported firing between Iran and the United States in the Strait of Hormuz, his spokesman said.

“He underlined that this is an important moment to de-escalate tensions and urges all parties to exercise maximum restraint to avoid further escalation,” spokesman Stéphane Dujarric said on Friday.

Guterres called on all parties to refrain from actions that could renew tensions or undermine ongoing diplomatic efforts, Dujarric said.

Update of the Strait of Hormuz

Iran has enacted new rules for ships transiting the strait, according to a document seen by CNN. Iran has told shippers to either follow new protocols for transiting the Strait of Hormuz – or risk attack.

According to the report, under the new system, all ships intending to transit the Strait of Hormuz will receive an email from an address associated with the newly formed Persian Gulf Strait Authority (PGSA) informing them about the new rules and regulations for the passage. Ships are required to obtain transit permits before transiting the waterway, one of the world’s most important oil-shipping chokepoints.

The US and Iran blockade of the vital waterway continues and has caused the biggest oil supply shock in history, sending energy prices soaring.

Clash between Iran and America in the Strait of Hormuz

Earlier, Iran’s Fars news agency reported “sporadic clashes” between Iranian forces and US naval vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global oil transit route.

Tensions escalated further after US Central Command said it hit two empty Iranian-flagged oil tankers that were allegedly attempting to violate the ongoing US blockade by entering an Iranian port through the Gulf of Oman.

US-Iran war live updates: US vs Iran in the Strait of Hormuz

US-Iran war live updates: US forces fired on and disabled two Iranian-flagged tankers after they attempted to break the US blockade of Iranian ports, the US military said on Friday.

According to US Central Command, US Navy F/A-18 Super Hornets “disabled both tankers after firing precision munitions into their smokestacks, thereby preventing non-compliant ships from entering Iran.”

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi criticized the latest US military action and said, “Every time a diplomatic solution is on the table, the US opts for reckless military adventurism.”

In a post on X, he wrote, “The Iranians never bow to pressure” and asked whether the US actions were a crude pressure tactic or “a plot to once again deceive POTUS.”

Iran has not yet indicated whether it will agree to Trump’s proposal, under which the Islamic Republic would reopen the Strait of Hormuz while the US gradually lifts the blockade on Iranian ports next month.

US-Iran war live updates: What did Iranian President say amid Washington-Tehran tension?

US-Iran war live updates: In a post on X, Pezeshkian said Tehran’s approach was to strengthen “friendly relations” built on mutual respect and common interests.

He rejected all forms of “colonialism and exploitation”, saying such ideas had no place in the future of the world.

He said, “Just as tolerance is deeply rooted in the culture of our people, the struggle against oppression shines brightly in the history of this land. This identity will continue to elevate the name of Iran.”

Pezeshkian’s latest comments against “colonialism and exploitation” came as tensions deepened after clashes in the Strait of Hormuz for the second consecutive day.

US Central Command said on Friday that US forces carried out airstrikes on two empty Iranian oil tankers that were attempting to bypass the blockade and reach a port in the country.

Iran said the move was a violation of the ceasefire agreement.
