West Indies 27 all out, 2nd lowest Test total, after Starc’s six, Boland’s hat-trick

July 14 proved to be a dramatic day of contrasts in Test cricket. At Lord’s, India and England battled through a gripping contest, with Ben Stokes’s men eventually prevailing in the third Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. The visitors showed grit and resistance, stretching the match deep before falling to a resilient English side — six years to the day after England’s iconic 2019 World Cup triumph.

In stark contrast, thousands of miles away in Kingston, Jamaica, West Indies offered little fight against Australia in the series finale of their three-match Test series. Chasing 205, the hosts collapsed for just 27 — the second-lowest total in Test history, the lowest in 70 years, and the worst-ever in a day-night Test.

Mitchell Starc, playing his 100th Test, ripped through the top order with three wickets in his first over and finished with six. Scott Boland added a hat-trick, as West Indies were completely dismantled under lights. Unlike the resilience shown by India in London, the West Indies folded without resistance, overwhelmed by Australia’s pace attack in a one-sided affair.

LOWEST TEST TOTALS

  1. 26 – NEW ZEALAND AGAINST ENGLAND IN AUCKLAND IN 1955
  2. 27 – WEST INDIES AGAINST AUSTRALIA IN KINGSTON IN 2025
  3. 30 – SOUTH AFRICA AGAINST ENGLAND IN GQEBERHA IN 1986
  4. 30 – SOUTH AFRICA AGAINST ENGLAND IN BIRMINGHAM IN 1924

West Indies captain Roston Chase conceded that the recurring theme of batting failures was hard to digest.

“Heartbreaking to be in a position like this. It has been recurring for the whole series, makes it all the more disappointing. It is quite easy to assess – the bowlers kept us in all along, batters never really clicked,” he said.
