Govt says El Nino risk to farm output manageable, cites irrigation, reservoirs, seed buffers
The government on Saturday said the threat posed by a possible El Nino this year is unlikely to cause major damage to agriculture, pointing to stronger irrigation systems, higher reservoir storage and better preparedness than in past drought-linked years.The assurance came after Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan chaired a review meeting ahead of the Kharif sowing season, which begins with the onset of the southwest monsoon in June and contributes a large share of India’s annual farm output, according to PTI.“Farmers need not have any concerns,” Chouhan told the meeting, according to a ministry statement, adding that the government was moving ahead with “complete preparedness.”“Despite the potential El Nino impact, its effect on the agriculture sector is likely to remain relatively limited compared to previous instances,” the statement added.The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast below-normal monsoon rainfall this year at around 92 per cent of the long-period average and has flagged the possibility of El Nino conditions developing during the season. A final forecast is expected in late May.Officials said reservoir storage across the country is currently at 127 per cent of the normal level for this time of year, giving a significant cushion for irrigation during the crop season.Seed stocks for both Kharif and the following Rabi season have been secured above requirements, with emergency reserves kept ready in case farmers need to replant or shift crops due to adverse weather.Officials at the meeting compared current preparedness with El Nino episodes between 2000 and 2016, when crop losses were sharper because farmers depended more heavily on rainfall and had fewer tools to handle climate shocks.Since then, India has expanded micro-irrigation coverage, introduced climate-resilient seed varieties and improved early warning systems, the government said.Paddy, the main Kharif crop, was specifically cited as showing greater resilience, while contingency plans are being prepared for crops considered more vulnerable to rainfall shortages.Chouhan directed states to activate contingency plans down to the district level and asked officials to promote drought-tolerant seeds and delayed sowing strategies if conditions worsen.A crop-weather monitoring mechanism is already operational, the ministry said, with the Centre and states coordinating regularly for quick response measures.El Nino, a periodic warming of surface waters in the central and eastern Pacific Ocean, often disrupts monsoon patterns over South Asia and has historically been linked to weaker rainfall in India.India is the world’s second-largest producer of rice and wheat, and agricultural output directly affects the livelihoods of hundreds of millions of people.

He added, “It will come in its own time. When the time is right, the film will be made. I hope we are not old by that time.”

RCB vs DC, IPL 2026: RCB blame tacky Chinnaswamy pitch for loss, but team won’t overanalyse result
Royal Challengers Bengaluru will not make a mountain out of a molehill after their loss against Delhi Capitals. RCB, playing at home, failed with the bat on April 18, scoring just 175 runs against Axar Patel’s Delhi. Considering Chinnaswamy’s lofty standards, they were far short of the par total, but managed to stretch the game to the final over on Saturday.

“Yeah, we probably weren’t as fluent as we normally are. Obviously, we’ve been a pretty strong batting unit so far in the games gone. I wouldn’t over-analyse that too much. We’ll review honestly like we always do,” Bobat said in the post-match press conference.
“We’ll always consider things that we did well and things that we could improve. Ultimately, we’ve been batting very well through this competition. So, we’ll take some learning from this game and then we’ll try and get back into our normal groove in the next one,” he added.

The RCB innings started well when Phil Salt took on Auqib Nabi inside the powerplay. RCB were 99/2 by the 10-over mark, but were not able to capitalise on it due to some good execution from the Delhi bowling unit.

Bobat admitted that RCB batters were not able to negate a tacky Chinnaswamy pitch and ended up scoring a few runs short. RCB captain Rajat Patidar was of the same view in the post-match interview as well, where he said that the team probably left out 15-20 runs on Saturday.
“Yeah, that was really close, but I feel that we were 15-20 runs short. The way we started initially, especially VK bhai and Salt, I think they gave a good start, but from there after, I think in 12 or 13 overs, we lost wickets in a couple of overs and that put us on the backseat. I think in the first innings, that was a bit tacky, I would say,” Patidar said.
“But I think the way we stretched in the last over, I think that’s a positive sign for us. But I think I was just discussing with the bowlers that they need to be clear whatever they do. I think it’s a long tournament, but we will go back and introspect where we made the errors and we’ll rectify them,” he added.
RCB FIGHT BACK vs DC
Despite scoring a below-par total, RCB bowlers fought back, especially Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who conceded just 26 runs from his four overs, in return for 3 wickets.
RCB bowled out Bhuvi and Josh Hazlewood, looking to choke out Delhi, but were left with only part-timer Romario Shepherd to bowl the final over. Romario had 15 runs to defend and gave away only 2 singles in his first two balls, sending alarms into the Delhi Capitals dugout.
However, he was not able to sustain it and was whacked for two sixes and a four in the next three balls, sealing RCB’s fate in the game.
Bobat reacted to the move, stating that RCB had no choice left and that the risk did not come off on the day.
“There comes a point in the game where you feel like you’re behind in the game. So, to get yourself back in that game or maybe even get ahead of the game, you have to use your champion bowlers. So we felt that we had to bowl both Hazlewood and Bhuvi when we did to make it as difficult as possible later in the game,” the director of cricket said.
“Obviously, that involves a bit of a risk. It’s a tough ask for Romario bowling that last over to two international batters and two international finishers. So it was always going to be a tough ask. But we had to take the game as deep as possible,” Bobat concluded.
RCB will now take nearly a week-long break and then play Gujarat Titans at home on April 24.

Venezuela’s main opposition leader Maria Corina Machado says she has “no regrets” about giving US President Donald Trump her Nobel Peace Prize medal.
Machado, the 2025 recipient of the prestigious prize, presented the medal that accompanies the prize to Trump when she met him at the White House in January, two weeks after he ordered US special forces to seize Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro from Caracas.

Trump’s military operation to remove Maduro, who is currently detained in the US facing drug trafficking charges, is “something we Venezuelans will never forget”, she was quoted by AFP news agency as saying at a conference in Madrid on Saturday.
“There is a leader in the world, a head of state in the world, who risked the lives of his country’s citizens for Venezuela’s freedom,” she said.
Trump, who has long publicly coveted the Nobel Peace Prize, called Machado’s presentation of the medal at the time a “wonderful gesture of mutual respect”.
The Norwegian Nobel Committee, which honoured Machado for her tireless campaign to restore democratic rights in Venezuela and her struggle to achieve a peaceful transition from authoritarian rule, made clear after the handover that the prize is nontransferable and cannot be revoked, shared or transferred to others.
Machado, who had been living in hiding before leaving Venezuela in December to collect her prize in Oslo, said she was coordinating her return to the country with Washington.
US key to ‘democratic transition’
“I am speaking with the US government, and we are working in coordination, with mutual respect and understanding,” she said, adding that she believed Washington was “key to advancing a democratic transition” in Venezuela.
Trump has, however, publicly questioned Machado’s standing, calling her a “very nice woman” but saying she lacks “respect” within Venezuela. He has instead backed Maduro’s former vice president, Delcy Rodriguez, as the country’s interim leader.
Venezuela’s opposition last week called for presidential elections. Machado, who was banned from running in the disputed 2024 vote that returned Maduro to power, has not yet said whether she would stand in a future poll.
While in Spain, Machado declined a meeting with Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, citing his hosting of a progressive leaders’ summit in Barcelona as proof the meeting was “not advisable”. Sanchez had said he was willing to meet her at any time.
This snub comes in contrast to her frequent encounters with Sanchez’s right-wing opponents.
