Here is the situation on Saturday, December 21:

Fighting

  • Ukraine targeted the town of Rylsk in Russia’s Kursk border region on Friday, deploying US-supplied missiles in an attack that killed six people. US President Joe Biden recently authorised Ukraine to use US-supplied missiles to strike deeper inside Russia.
  • Hours earlier, a Russian strike on Kyiv killed at least one person and damaged a building hosting the embassies of Albania, Argentina, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Palestine, and Portugal. Moscow said the strike was retaliation for a Ukrainian strike on Russia’s Rostov with Western missiles.
  • Kyiv said on Friday it had received the bodies of 503 dead Ukrainian service members from the Donetsk, Luhansk and Zaporizhia regions, and morgues inside Russia. Most of the bodies were from Donetsk, which has suffered the worst of the fighting.

Economy

  • Russia’s central bank left its benchmark interest rate at a record 21 percent, holding off on further increases despite high consumer inflation fuelled by massive spending on the war and deep labour shortages.
  • Business figures have criticised the Kremlin for the effects higher borrowing costs have had on the economy.
  • The International Monetary Fund approved $1.1bn in budgetary support to Ukraine on Friday, bringing the total disbursed under the institution’s ongoing assistance programme to $9.8bn since March 2023.

Politics and diplomacy

  • European Union chief Ursula von der Leyen condemned the Russian strike on Kyiv that damaged a building hosting multiple diplomatic missions. “Another heinous Russian attack against Kyiv,” she posted on X. “Putin’s disregard for international law reaches new heights.”
  • Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said European leaders must change their strategy regarding Ukraine as Russia advances on the front lines. Speaking to Hungary’s state broadcaster on Friday, he called for a Christmas truce in Ukraine and the exchange of up to 1,000 prisoners of war.
  • Orban has routinely blocked, delayed or watered down EU efforts to provide weapons and funding and to sanction Moscow for its invasion.
  • Germany’s Chancellor Olaf Scholz said on Friday he would speak with Russian President Vladimir Putin again after reinitiating contact last month, a move that prompted criticism from Ukraine. Scholz said the aim of further calls would be ” to make clear” that Putin needed “to end his aggression and withdraw troops”.

IOB Q3 profit jumps 30% to Rs 723 crore on improvement in core income

NEW DELHI: State-owned Indian Overseas Bank (IOB) on Wednesday reported 30 per cent rise in net profit at Rs 723 crore for December quarter 2023-24, on the back of improvement in core income and reduction in bad loans. The Chennai-based lender had earned a net profit of Rs 555 crore in the same quarter a year ago.
Operating profit of the bank improved to Rs 1,780 crore as against Rs 1,540 crore in December 2022.
Total income increased to Rs 7,437 crore during the quarter under review from Rs 6,006 crore in the same period last year, IOB said in a regulatory filing.
Interest income also rose to Rs 6,176 crore over Rs 5,056 crore for the quarter ended December 2022.
During the quarter, the bank had done total cash recovery of Rs 327 crore as against Rs 460 crore in the third quarter of the previous fiscal.
On the asset quality front, the bank’s gross Non-Performing Assets (NPAs) declined to 3.90 per cent of gross loans by the end of December 2023 from 8.19 per cent a year ago.
Similarly, net NPAs or bad loans came down to 0.62 per cent as compared to 2.43 per cent in FY22.
As a result, provisions for bad loans declined to Rs 367 crore from Rs 711 crore a year ago.
The bank’s Provision Coverage Ratio stood at 96.85 per cent at the end of third quarter as against 91.34 per cent as on December 31, 2022.
Its Capital Adequacy Ratio improved to 16.80 per cent from 15.16 per cent at the end of the December quarter of FY22.
Current Account Savings Account (CASA) as percentage of total deposits declined marginally to 43.49 per cent.

The Democratic-controlled US Senate has voted to pass a budget deal to avert what would be the first US federal government shutdown since 2019, only hours after the House of Representatives approved the same legislation.

The budget deal was passed shortly after a midnight deadline passed.

It does not include a demand from President-elect Donald Trump that lawmakers increase how much money the federal government can borrow, showing the limits of his ability to command lawmakers from his own party.

The bill now goes to President Joe Biden to be signed into law. A statement from Biden’s spokeswoman released earlier on Friday night said that he approved of the deal.

Lawmakers earlier this week had successfully negotiated a deal to fund government agencies but it fell apart after Trump and tech billionaire Elon Musk called on Republicans to reject it.

The bill approved by Congress is the third one lawmakers voted on this week, after members of Congress voted down two earlier drafts.

Mumbai: There has been a massive 233 per cent growth (year-on-year) in overall net inflows in systematic investment plans (SIPs) in India this year, according to a new report, as the Indian economy remains resilient amid rough geo-political conditions. 

Overall net inflows stood at Rs 9.14 lakh crore from January to November this year, as against Rs. 2.74 lakh crore in 2023 which tantamount to a growth of 233 per cent, according to the report by ICRA Analytics. Number of new SIPs registered increased to 49.47 lakh at the end of November, as against 30.80 lakh in November 2023. Moreover, SIP assets under management (AUM) stood at Rs 13.54 lakh crore in November, as against Rs. 9.31 lakh crore in 2023, said the report.

Indian mutual fund (MF) industry witnessed over 135 per cent surge in net inflows and nearly 39 per cent growth in net AUM (Assets under Management) over the last one year, the report said, adding that the industry is likely to witness a multi-fold growth in the coming years with India being in a bright spot in the global economy.

“With the structural growth story of the Indian economy remaining intact and India a bright spot in the global economy, the domestic mutual fund industry is expected to witness multi-fold growth in the coming years,” said Ashwini Kumar, senior vice president and head market data, ICRA Analytics.

Meanwhile, total inflows into the mutual fund industry grew by 135.38 per cent at Rs 60,295.30 crore in November 2024, as against Rs 25,615.65 crore in November 2023. Interestingly, the net AUM which was at Rs 49.05 lakh crore in November last year, crossed the historic milestone to touch Rs 68.08 lakh crore in November this year.

While all funds witnessed a robust growth in India, inflows into large cap funds under equity category were the highest, registering a surge of nearly 731 per cent at Rs 2547.92 crore in November 2024 as against Rs 306.70 crore same period last year.

“Large and mid-cap funds are likely to be a big draw among investors in the coming days amid increased volatility in domestic markets following escalating geopolitical risks and global uncertainty,” Kumar said.

Small-cap and mid-cap funds, which have witnessed a steady surge in AUM, are also likely to hold investor interest in the medium to long term, due to the value created in the entities backed by robust regulatory framework leading to better corporate governance practices and the government’s firm intent to push for an intrinsic growth in the country’s economy.

Some members of the workers’ union representing more than 10,000 baristas at Starbucks in the United States have begun a five-day strike at stores in Los Angeles, Chicago and Seattle, citing unresolved issues over wages, staffing and schedules.

The strike, which started on Friday, is the latest in a series of labour actions in the US that have picked up pace across service industries following a period when workers of automotive, aerospace and rail manufacturers won substantial concessions from employers.

The Starbucks Workers United Union, which represents employees at 525 stores across the US, said late on Thursday that walkouts would escalate daily and could reach “hundreds of stores” nationwide by Christmas Eve.

“It’s estimated that 10 stores out of 10,000 company-operated stores did not open today,” Starbucks said, adding that there was no significant impact on store operations on Friday.

About 20 people joined a picket line at a Starbucks location on Chicago’s north side, buffeted by snow and wind, but cheering in response to the honking horns of passing cars.

A few confused customers tried to walk into the closed store before strikers began chanting, but union member Shep Searl said the reaction had been mostly positive.

Searl said 100 percent of the unionised workers at the Starbucks location in Chicago’s Edgewater neighbourhood were participating in the strike and, according to the workers, they have been subject to numerous unfair labour practices including write-ups, “captive-audience” meetings and firings. (A captive-audience meeting is a mandatory meeting organised by a firm where employees are interested in unionising and where it brings in labour relations consultants to talk about the pros and cons of unionising.)

The union members said they made about $21 an hour and added that this “would have been a great wage in 2013”.

It is an inadequate wage, the baristas said, given inflation and the high cost of living in a large city, especially since they rarely got 40-hour work weeks.

“We’re planning to escalate if we need to,” they said.

Deadlock

Negotiations between the company and Workers United began in April, based on an established framework agreed upon in February, which could also help resolve numerous pending legal disputes.

The company said on Thursday it has held more than nine bargaining sessions with the union since April, and reached more than 30 agreements on “hundreds of topics”, including economic issues.

The firm, whose headquarters are in Seattle, said it was ready to continue negotiations, claiming the union delegates prematurely ended the bargaining session this week.

The union, however, said in a Facebook post on Friday that Starbucks had yet to present a serious economic proposal with less than two weeks remaining until the year-end contract deadline.

The workers’ group also snubbed an offer of no immediate wage hike and a guarantee of a 1.5 percent increase in future years.

“Workers United proposals call for an immediate increase in the minimum wage of hourly partners by 64 percent, and by 77 percent over the life of a three-year contract. This is not sustainable,” Starbucks said on Friday.

Hundreds of complaints have been filed with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), accusing Starbucks of unlawful labour practices such as firing union supporters and closing stores during labour campaigns. Starbucks has denied wrongdoing and said it respects the right of workers to choose whether to unionise.

Last month, the NLRB said that Starbucks broke the law by telling workers at its flagship Seattle cafe that they would lose benefits if they joined a union.

“It’s [the strike] taking place during one of the busiest times of the year for Starbucks, which could magnify its impact while bringing unwanted public scrutiny into the company’s labour practices,” Rachel Wolff, an analyst with market researcher Emarketer, said.

The coffee chain is undergoing a turnaround under its newly-appointed boss Brian Niccol, who aims to restore “coffee house culture” by overhauling cafes and simplifying the menu, among other measures.

“Given how much Starbucks is already struggling to win over customers, it can ill afford any negative publicity – or impact to sales – that the strike could bring,” Wolff said.

The union has called for support at the picket lines in the three cities starting at about 18:00 GMT, according to a post on X.

The Starbucks workers’ strike comes in the same week as Amazon workers at seven US facilities walked off the job, on Thursday, during the holiday shopping rush.

There were 33 work stoppages in 2023, the most since 2000, though far lower than in past decades, data from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics showed.

Alphabet’s Google proposed on Friday a loosening of its agreements with Apple and others to set Google as the default search engine on new devices to address a U.S. ruling that it unlawfully dominates online search.

The proposal is much narrower than the government’s bid to make Google sell its Chrome browser in the antitrust case over online search.

Google urged U.S. District Judge Amit Mehta in Washington to move cautiously in deciding what the company must do to restore competition after his ruling that the company holds an illegal monopoly in online search and related advertising.

While Google plans to appeal that ruling at the end of the case, it says the upcoming “remedies” phase should focus on its distribution agreements with browser developers, mobile device manufacturers, and wireless carriers.

The judge found the agreements give Google a “major, largely unseen advantage over its rivals” and result in most devices in the U.S. coming pre-loaded with Google’s search engine.

The agreements are hard to exit, the judge said, especially for Android manufacturers, which must agree to install Google search in order to include Google’s Play Store on their devices.

To fix that, Google could make them non-exclusive and, for Android phone manufacturers, unbundle its Play Store from Chrome and search, the company said in court papers.

Unlike the government’s proposal, Google’s would not end revenue sharing agreements, which pass a portion of ad revenue Google makes off of search users to the device and software companies that present it as the default search engine.

Independent browser developers including Mozilla, which makes Firefox, have said the funds are crucial to their operations. Apple received an estimated $20 billion from its agreement with Google in 2022 alone.

Google’s proposal sets the stage for a trial Mehta will hold in April, where the U.S. Department of Justice and a coalition of states will seek to show the need for wide-ranging remedies, including making Google sell off Chrome and potentially its Android mobile operating system.

Prosecutors also want Google to stop paying to be the default search engine, and cease investments in search rivals and query-based artificial intelligence products, and license its search results and technology to rivals.

Prosecutors say the proposals aim to spur innovation in online search, where Mehta found Google’s overwhelming market share keeps competitors from gathering the search data needed to improve their products. Prosecutors also seek to prevent Google from extending its dominance in search to AI.

Gisèle Pelicot: ‘I never regretted decision to make trial public’

French rape survivor Gisèle Pelicot walked out of a court in southern France for the last time on Thursday after her ex-husband was jailed for 20 years for drugging and raping her, and inviting dozens of strangers to also abuse her over nearly a decade.

Dominique Pelicot, 72, was found guilty of all charges by a judge in Avignon. He was on trial with 50 other men, all of whom were found guilty of at least one charge, although their jail terms were less than what prosecutors had demanded.

Although the trial is over, there are still questions lingering over the Pelicot case and what happens next.

1. What will Gisèle Pelicot do now?

When she climbed the steps of the Avignon courthouse for the first time in September, no one knew Gisèle Pelicot’s name. Over the course of the next 15 weeks, her fame as a rape victim who refused to be ashamed of what had been done to her grew vertiginously.

By the time she left the tribunal on Thursday, crowds of hundreds were chanting her name and her picture was on the front pages of newspapers worldwide.

She is now perhaps one of the best-known women in France. This means that although she has changed her name, it will be impossible for her to return to the anonymity that served her so well as she tried to rebuild a life following the revelation of her husband’s crimes.

Gisèle is not the first person whose unimaginable suffering has turned her into an icon. At great personal cost, she has become the symbol of a fight she never chose. It seems unlikely, then, that she will want to become an outspoken activist against gender violence, or a prominent feminist figure. Rather, she may go back to what she has said has always given her solace: music, long walks and chocolate – as well as her seven grandchildren.

“At the start of the trial she said: ‘If I last two weeks, that will be a lot.’ In the end, she made it to three and a half months,” her lawyer Stephane Babonneau said. “Now, she is at peace, and relieved it’s all over.”

2. What really happened to Caroline?

Days after Dominique Pelicot’s crimes came to light, his daughter Caroline Darian was summoned to the police station and shown photos of an apparently unconscious woman dressed in unfamiliar lingerie. Later, she said her life had “stopped” when she realised she was looking at photos of herself.

Her father has always denied touching her, but Caroline – whose anguish and devastation were apparent in many court sessions – has said she would never believe him and accused him of looking at her “with incestuous eyes”.

But the lack of proof of the abuse Caroline is convinced was inflicted on her has led her to say she is “the forgotten victim” of the trial. That notion has visibly seeped into her relationship with her mother. In her memoir – published after her father’s arrest – she accused Gisèle of not showing her enough support, implicitly choosing to side with her rapist ex-husband over her daughter.

Although Gisèle and her children have always sat next to one another in court, often whispering huddled together, there have been signs of the toll the trial has taken on their relationship.

On Friday, Caroline’s brother David highlighted – as he has done before – that the trial had not just been about Gisèle but about their whole “annihilated family”.

“Us children felt forgotten,” he said. “Very honestly I feel that while our lawyers did a remarkable job on the defence of our mother, we were a little bit less taken into account.”

In her memoir, Caroline lamented Gisèle’s “denial as a coping mechanism”.

“Because of my father,” she wrote, “I am now losing my mother.”

3. How many defendants will appeal?

Apart from Dominique, all of the jail terms handed down to the defendants were less than what prosecutors had demanded.

Several defence lawyers were visibly satisfied, meaning it is unlikely they will encourage their clients to appeal against their sentences. A man called Jean-Pierre Maréchal got 12 years – five less than prosecutors had asked – and his lawyer Patrick Gontard told the BBC it was “out of the question” he would appeal.

The months or years the men spent in pre-trial detention will count towards their total sentences, meaning that some may be freed soon if they have served their minimum term.

One man who was facing 17 years ended up being sentenced to eight years’ imprisonment, and his lawyer Roland Marmillot told the BBC that because he had already spent several years in jail it was likely he would be released relatively soon.

Still, by the morning after the trial closed, two men each jailed for eight years had already appealed. More are expected to follow over the next ten days – the period of time appeals can be lodged for.

4. What else could Dominique Pelicot be guilty of?

Dominique Pelicot has admitted to assaulting and attempting to rape a 23-year-old estate agent, known by the pseudonym Marion, in the suburbs of Paris in 1999. A cloth imbued with ether was put over her mouth but she managed to fight the attacker off and he fled. It was only in 2021, after he was arrested for the crimes he inflicted on his wife Gisèle, that Pelicot’s DNA was cross-checked with a speck of blood found on Marion’s shoe, and he admitted to his guilt.

He has, however, denied any responsibility in another cold case – the 1991 rape and murder of another young estate agent, Sophie Narme, for which there is no DNA. Investigators have argued that the two cases present too many similarities to be coincidental.

Other cold cases where similar modi operandi were used are also being looked at again.

5. Will the trial be a turning point?

“There will be a ‘before’ and there will be an ‘after’ the Pelicot trial,” one Parisian man told the BBC in the early days of the trial.

For many, this sentiment has only grown over the last few months during which the intense media coverage of the Pelicot trial generated countless conversations around rape, consent and gender violence.

“What we need to do is have much, much harsher sentences,” Nicolas and Mehdi, two Mazan residents, told the BBC. They said they were “disgusted” when they found out one of the defendants was a man they had played football with.

“With longer sentences they’ll at least they’ll think twice before doing stuff like this,” they said, adding that it was “crazy unfair” that some of the men could come out of jail in the next few months.

The Pelicot trial has led to calls for changes to French laws on consent.

It is worth noting, however, that the risk of incurring a 20-year prison sentence for aggravated rape did not deter Dominique Pelicot from offering his unconscious wife to be raped by strangers he met online.

There have been calls to reform French legislation on rape to include consent, but that has stalled in the past and would take considerable work in the current divided French parliament.

Some have argued that schools have a responsibility to better teach new generations about sex, love and consent. Béatrice Zavarro, Dominique Pelicot’s lawyer, has said she believes “change will not come from the Ministry of Justice but from the Ministry of Education.”

Françoise, a resident of the area where Gisèle and Dominique Pelicot used to live, told the BBC she thinks a way must be found to bridge the gap between what children are taught in schools and the type of material they have access to online.

“Young people are so exposed to sex on the internet and at the same time schools are very prudish,” she said. “They should be much more open and frank to match and explain what kids see.”

What these exchanges show is that, while it will take time before any changes become tangible, a conversation has now started. It will continue until there are no more unanswered questions.
