For many voters, leadership, candidates, party symbols, caste, class, beneficiary status, loyalty and relationships play a more important role. Unemployment is a big issue, but for a section of the youth, issues like Hindutva or leadership may matter more.

Bread and butter concerns matter

When discussing issues, bread and butter issues matter more to voters than rhetoric. For the Congress, the Rafale issue did not resonate with voters in 2019, and now Rahul Gandhi’s focus on the Adani issue is waning. Rahul did not raise enough issues related to farmer suicides, inflation or unemployment in Maharashtra. S&P Global Ratings also forecasts a decline in defaults, albeit still at a slower pace than the rise. The lowest-rated borrowers continue to face the strains of still-elevated borrowing costs, lingering effects of permanently higher prices on consumers’ purchasing power, and heightened geopolitical risk — most notably, increasing protectionism that will weigh on global trade.

“Deepening geopolitical rifts pose the biggest risk to an improving credit landscape,” said Gregg Lemos-Stein, Chief Analytical Officer for Corporate Ratings. “The Russia-Ukraine war’s continuation into the end of its third year, the intensification of the conflict in the Middle East, and the propagation of domestic polarization in certain markets could disrupt trade and investment flows, roil financial markets, and force governments to increase defence spending amid already-stretched budgets,” the report says.

US President-elect Donald Trump’s return to the White House will have wide-ranging ramifications on a global scale — with a high level of uncertainty attached to his second term. On the trade front, Trump has suggested universal tariffs on all goods imported to the US as well as sharply higher levies on all Chinese goods. S&P Global Ratings believes that the effects of such scenarios would be inflationary in the short term with companies facing higher input costs and consumers paying more for finished goods; prompting a drag on the US GDP in the medium-term, while underpinning still-high benchmark interest rates; and accelerating the diversification of supply chains over the long-term, in particular away from China. Trump has also vowed to withdraw military funding for Ukraine, which will add to the pressures European governments face in supporting the country.

AI technologies are multidimensional unlike other technologies. For example, a student, lawyer, researcher, writer, and a software developer can all use the same LLM tools to find straightforward solutions to a variety of problems in their respective fields. This is very different from how common tools like word processors provide problem-solving tools. Millions of people use them directly on a daily basis. I personally have been using LLMs heavily to assist with technical tasks, and they are saving me a lot of time, which was not possible before.

Of course, there is a lot of hype surrounding these technologies, but there are important facts behind it. There are lots of fads in technology. Remember Blockchain, which was meant to revolutionize the world? Or ‘Big Data’, which became a buzzword where every organization stood to gain untold benefits from massive amounts of data? What about 5G? It aimed to revolutionize everything from mobility to ‘smart cities’ and more.

Are you one of those people who used to be an AI skeptic and then became an AI optimist? I remember an article you wrote a few years ago, referring to the “powered by AI/ML” nonsense being peddled by snake-oil salesmen.

I am not an AI-optimist or an AI-skeptic. I was and remain a strong skeptic of the “powered by AI” claim, where organizations use that phrase thoughtlessly in an attempt to differentiate themselves, while not using any AI technology at all or some rudimentary form of it. not used. With recent breakthroughs and commoditization of AI technologies, one can easily integrate AI technologies and claim to be “powered by AI”, making the phrase meaningless.

I’ve been writing software and building technologies and enjoying doing it professionally and personally for a very long time. The majority of my work involves writing software and automation that simplify humans’ lives, creating user-centered technologies that provide meaningful utility and quality-of-life improvements. Any kind of important decision that affects life or society, I would not leave it completely to automation. For example, service delivery to citizens, processing of insurance claims, etc. Such important decisions must be made by humans who can be held accountable.

You have played a key role in building Kite, the company’s main trading platform. It is known for its smooth user experience. Zerodha was a pioneer in this field but competition is increasing. How do you think Zerodha can maintain its lead, given that technology in this sector has become commoditized?

Two companies may use the same framework, programming language, same database but how they package it and ultimately deliver it to customers makes a huge difference. I have seen many of our competitors impose things on customers that are not in their best interests but generate additional revenue for the company. Many of our competitors are engaged in motivating customers to do more business and generate more revenue for the company. We don’t do that. If you open our app you will not see any product or loan pushed towards you. This is our business philosophy.

We do not have external investors. Companies that have raised VC funding have to answer to their investors and it all shows in how you package your product. There is no pressure from investors on us whereas there is pressure from investors on our competitors because they are all heavily funded. That’s our advantage and I’d like to think that our lead is growing.

It is clear that open-source has a definite role to play in generative AI. How actively is Zerodha exploring these options? Zerodha has also launched a dedicated $1 million annual fund to provide financial support to open-source projects globally.

Extensive decentralized innovation in AI technologies is taking place in the open-source world. New breakthroughs and improvements are emerging on a weekly basis. At Zerodha, we are experimenting with self-hosting some of these open-source AI tools to streamline organizational tasks related to internal backoffice. It is working quite well. With our newly launched Free/Libre and Open Source Software (FLOSS) Fund, we aim to provide financial support to critical Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) projects that are vital to the ecosystem. We have created a small dedicated team internally to drive this initiative.

Can you give us an example of how Zerodha used AI tools to bring greater efficiency to the company?

Let’s transform the quality assurance process. Our team has been listening to thousands of recorded customer calls over many years. It was a manual process that was soul-crushing for the team. We created a pipeline of calls and used Whisper, an open-source model to convert voice to text. We then used a locally hosted LLM to analyze this text on certain parameters. LLMs are now used to analyze these transcripts, and we are able to identify where quality parameters are not met without resorting to random sampling. This has resulted in huge increases in efficiency.

I am learning a new language called Rust. Started working on a project in Rust and am building a fairly complex software while learning the language from scratch with the help of LLM. I’ve created a fairly well-written prototype in this language in just a few hours, which otherwise would have taken days. As a senior engineer, when I get stuck in big problems, I send the problem to the LLM, and he gives me the solution in 30 seconds, which might otherwise take 30 minutes. What is happening now is unimaginable. Even when dealing with a complex engineering problem, the LLM may suggest three approaches, and you can exercise your faculty to choose one.

What types of job roles do you see becoming redundant in India due to AI in the next few years? And why?

The most obvious candidates seem to be entry-level tasks where language comprehension and creation are involved. Programming work by junior developers, cataloging and summarizing research material by research assistants, and corporate writing and graphic design work appear to be low-hanging fruit.

Do you see engineering students now turning to AI-related courses? What would your advice be to them?

I do, and I don’t think it’s necessarily useful for a large number of students. “Big Data” courses were also popular at one time, remember? I don’t think it was a good thing to have so many students trying for engineering courses. The only advice I can give students is to search for problems they can relate to, and work on personal projects that solve them, gaining first-hand experience. Since there is no parking at the Azad Maidan grounds, where the swearing-in ceremony will take place, people are requested to use the public transport system.

Traffic is prohibited on the following routes:

Although it is customary for residents of Maharashtra to use their father’s name as their middle name, this is probably the first time Mr Fadnavis has used his mother’s name for any official purpose.

Swapo becomes latest ruling party in Africa to suffer losses

Namibia’s governing party, Swapo, has retained its hold on power after more than 30 years, however its grip has been loosened – the latest African country where incumbents have had a difficult time this year.

According to official results, Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, the Swapo candidate, won the presidential election with 57% of the vote, becoming the country’s first female leader.

Opposition parties have refused to accept the outcome after the polls were marred by logistical problems and irregularities.

Other important questions that have yet to be answered include how it was possible that Swapo increased its share of the presidential vote when in the parliamentary election it recorded its worst-ever performance, losing 12 of its 63 seats and only just holding on to its parliamentary majority.

Swapo is not alone in suffering a major electoral setback.

This year has been an “annus horribilis” for those governments in sub-Saharan Africa that have had to face voters at the ballot box.

In almost every election held in the region this year under reasonably democratic conditions, the governing party either lost a significant number of seats or lost power completely.

This trend has been driven by a combination of factors:

  • the economic downturn
  • growing public intolerance of corruption
  • and the emergence of increasingly assertive and well-coordinated opposition parties.

The trend is likely to continue into 2025.

Namibians have been governed by Swapo since independence in 1990

One of the most striking aspect of the elections that have taken place in 2024 is that many have resulted in landslide defeats for governments that have previously appeared to have a strong grip on power – including in countries that have never before experienced a change at the top.

The Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) that had ruled the country since independence in 1966 was crushed in October’s general elections.

As well as losing power, the BDP went from holding 38 seats in the 69-strong parliament to almost being wiped out.

After winning only four seats, the BDP is now one of the smallest parties in parliament, and faces an uphill battle to remain politically relevant.

There was also a landslide defeat for the governing party in Mauritius in November, where the Alliance Lepep coalition, headed by Pravind Jagnauth of the Militant Socialist Movement, won only 27% of the vote and was reduced to just two seats in parliament.

With the opposition Alliance du Changement sweeping 60 of the 66 seats available, Mauritius has experienced one of the most complete political transformations imaginable.

Senegal and the self-declared republic of Somaliland also saw opposition victories.

In the case of Senegal, the political turnaround was just as striking as in Botswana, albeit in a different way.

Just weeks ahead of the election, the main opposition leaders Bassirou Diomaye Faye and Ousmane Sonko were languishing in jail as the government of President Macky Sall abused its power in a desperate bid to avert defeat.

After growing domestic and international pressure led to Faye and Sonko being released, Faye went on to win the presidency in the first round of voting, with the government’s candidate winning only 36% of the vote.

Euphoria swept across Senegal after the opposition won elections

Even in cases where governments have not lost, their reputation and political control have been severely dented.

Like Swapo, South Africa’s African National Congress (ANC) retained power but only after a bruising campaign that saw it fall below 50% of the vote in a national election for the first time since the end of white-minority rule in 1994.

This forced President Cyril Ramaphosa to enter into a coalition government, giving up 12 cabinet posts to other parties, including powerful positions such as Home Affairs.

As a result, a region that is known more for governments that manage to hold on to power for decades has seen 12 months of vibrant, intensely contested, multiparty politics.

The only exceptions to this have been countries where elections were seen as neither free nor fair, such as Chad and Rwanda, or in which governments were accused by opposition and rights groups of resorting to a combination of rigging and repression to avert defeat, as in Mozambique.

Three trends have combined to make it a particularly difficult year to be in power.

In Botswana, Mauritius and Senegal, growing citizen concern about corruption and the abuse of power eroded government credibility.

Opposition leaders were then able to play on popular anger at nepotism, economic mismanagement and the failure of leaders to uphold the rule of law to expand their support base.

Especially in Mauritius and Senegal, the party in power also undermined its claim to be a government committed to respecting political rights and civil liberties – a dangerous misstep in countries where the vast majority of citizens are committed to democracy, and which have previously seen opposition victories.

The perception that governments were mishandling the economy was particularly important because many people experienced a tough year financially.

High food and fuel prices have increased the cost of living for millions of citizens, increasing their frustration with the status quo.

In addition to underpinning some of the government defeats this year, economic anger was the main driving force that triggered the youth-led protests in Kenya that rocked President William Ruto’s government in July and August.

Anger over higher taxes, coupled with rise in the cost of living, led to protests in Kenya

This is not an African phenomenon, of course, but a global one.

Popular discontent over inflation played a role in the defeat of Rishi Sunak and the Conservative Party in the UK and the victory of Donald Trump and the Republican Party in the United States.

What was perhaps more distinctive about the transfers of power in Africa this year was the way that opposition parties learned from the past.

In some cases, such as Mauritius, this meant developing new ways to try and protect the vote by ensuring every stage of the electoral process was carefully watched.

In others, it meant forging new coalitions to present the electorate with a united front.

In Botswana, for example, three opposition parties and a number of independent candidates came together under the banner of the Umbrella for Democratic Change to comprehensively out-mobilise the BDP.

A similar set of trends could make life difficult for Ghana’s New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Saturday’s election, and will also cause the Malawian government of President Lazarus Chakwera major problems when general elections come around in 2025.

If Ghana does see a transfer of power, sub-Saharan Africa will have experienced five opposition victories in 2024 – more than any other year in its history.

That so many governments are being given an electoral bloody nose against a backdrop of global democratic decline that has seen a rise in authoritarianism in some regions is particularly striking.

It suggests that Africa has much higher levels of democratic resilience than is often recognized, notwithstanding the number of entrenched authoritarian regimes that continue to exist.

Civil society groups, opposition parties and citizens themselves have mobilised in large numbers to demand accountability, and punish governments that have failed both economically and democratically.

International governments, organizations, and activists looking for new ways to defend democracy around the world should pay more attention to a region that is often assumed to be an inhospitable environment for multiparty politics, yet has seen more examples of democratic bounce-back than other regions of the world.

The world’s biggest and best-known cryptocurrency has more than doubled from this year’s low of $38,505 and is up over 50% since Trump’s sweeping election win in early November.

Here are key events in bitcoin’s journey towards $100,000 and beyond:

2008: Satoshi Nakamoto, the pseudonym used by the cryptocurrency’s presumed developer, introduces the concept of bitcoin

2010: The first retail transaction takes place when a user pays 10,000 bitcoin for two Papa John’s pizzas

2013: As bitcoin’s popularity grows, Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss, co-founders of crypto exchange Gemini, file their first application with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission to create a spot bitcoin ETF.

Grayscale Investments launches the Bitcoin Investment Trust, an open-ended private bitcoin trust.

2016: The Winklevoss brothers adjust their application numerous times, such as the exchange on which the product would be traded. They also file amendments naming State Street as administrator. Grayscale files with the SEC to convert its bitcoin trust into a spot bitcoin ETF.

2017: The SEC rejects the Winklevoss application on the grounds bitcoin markets were not mature enough. Grayscale withdraws its first attempt to convert its trust into an ETF, saying the regulatory environment was not developed enough.

2018: The SEC rejects the Winklevoss twins’ second application to launch a spot bitcoin ETF, saying cryptocurrency exchanges do not have the necessary controls to prevent manipulation.

2020: Grayscale transforms its trust into an SEC-reporting entity, and its shares begin trading on the pink sheets, for stocks that trade over the counter. Although not an ETF, it is the first publicly traded bitcoin fund in the U.S.

2021: The first spot bitcoin ETF launches in Canada. Gary Gensler replaces Jay Clayton as SEC chair in April.

In October, the SEC approves the ProShares Bitcoin Trust listed on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, noting the CME has a satisfactory mechanism for surveilling abuse in the futures market. It is the first U.S.-listed futures-based bitcoin ETF, accumulating $1 billion in assets within its first days of trading – faster than any other ETF.

Also in October, Grayscale again submits an application to the SEC to convert its trust into a spot bitcoin ETF.

Stock market today: BSE Sensex and Nifty50, the Indian equity benchmark indices, opened in green on Thursday. While BSE Sensex moved above 81,000, Nifty50 was above 24,500. At 9:17 AM, BSE Sensex was trading at 81,093.61, up 137 points or 0.17%. Nifty50 was at 24,504.10, up 37 points or 0.15%.
Nifty concluded Wednesday’s volatile session without significant change, influenced by conflicting factors between domestic positives and weak Asian indicators.
“We expect the consolidation to continue in the next session, though the overall sentiment should stay positive. Traders are advised to focus on a stock-specific approach and use these intermediate pauses to accumulate quality stocks,” said Ajit Mishra – SVP, Research, Religare Broking.
Support exists at 24,350, with resistance at 24,700. Breaking above 24,700 could extend the upward trend, whilst falling below 24,350 might weaken market confidence, according to an ET report.
US indices achieved record closings on Wednesday, with technology shares leading gains following Salesforce results and Powell’s remarks.
Asian shares improved following global stock records. French political developments affected currency trading.
Oil prices increased Thursday before OPEC+ meeting, with focus on supply decisions and Middle East situations.
FPIs bought Rs 1,797 crore whilst DIIs sold Rs 90 crore on Wednesday. FII net short position reduced to Rs 82,563 crore from Rs 97,387 crore.
