Sweet surprise: Delnaaz Irani aka Sweetu surprises fans at Kal Ho Naa Ho screening: ‘Thank God I was a part of this’

Who doesn’t remember Sweetu from Kal Ho Naa Ho? But some fans, who attended a special screening of Nikkhil Advani’s 2004 cult romantic comedy in Mumbai earlier this week, didn’t expect the actor, Delnaaz Irani, to surprise them at the end of the show. What happened at the screening?

Writer-filmmaker Sanam Buxani took to her Instagram handle to share a Reel, in which she revealed that on popular demand, she organised a special screening of Kal Ho Naa Ho for fans after its re-release a couple of weeks ago. While fans had a ball dancing together to the popular wedding song Maahi Ve from the film towards the end, what they didn’t expect was to see a cast member come visiting them at the theatre.

Enter: Delnaaz Irani, who played the adorable character of Sweetu, in Kal Ho Naa Ho. Sweetu was a neighbour and BFF of Preity Zinta’s lead character of Naina. Aman (played by Shah Rukh Khan), another friendly neighbour, plays matchmaker for Sweetu by introducing her to a DJ named Franky. Sweetu and Franky go strong, till at one point, he decides to break up. But much to her delight, he returns for a brief appearance, as a DJ in Maahi Ve.

Delnaaz interacts with fans

Delnaaz, wearing a black and white top and matching pants, entered the theatre, to a rousing reception by the audience. She was visibly overwhelmed by the response. Delnaaz addressed the fans and said, “Thank you guys. Full house! Tab bhi full house, ab bhi full house (it was full house then, and it’s full house now). I don’t have words. Lafz nahi hain mere pas, yar. Totally overwhelmed.” She thanked the host and continued, “Itna pyaar (so much love), Itna adulation, what a cult film! Thank God I was a part of this.”

Delnaaz then clicked pictures with the audience members. One of them even mimicked her popular dialogue from the film, “Doosri shadi karungi, aur kya? (I’ll marry again, what else?),” which she says when Naina says what if her husband leaves her. Delnaaz also pointed out a fan wearing a red tie, like how Saif Ali Khan’s character Rohit wears to his date (?) with Naina.

Kal Ho Naa Ho has completed 20 years since its initial release. Produced by late Yash Johar’s Dharma Produtions and written by his son Karan Johar, it marked the directorial debut of Nikkhil Advani. The film also starred Jaya Bachchan, Sonali Bendre, Reema Lagu, Dara Singh, Sushma Seth, and Satish Shah among others.

LONDON — One art critic compared the new Harry Kane bronze statue to a bulging-jawed comic strip character.

Face facts: Statues of stars like Kane and Ronaldo don’t always deliver. Sculptors offer advice

In Miami, observers say the Dwyane Wade sculpture looks more like actor Laurence Fishburne than the former basketball star. Of course, the infamous Cristiano Ronaldo bust in 2017 gave the chiseled soccer star a chubby face and goofy smile.

A statue of Mohamed Salah in 2018 depicted the Liverpool star with a disproportionately large head. In 2011, a terracotta warrior statue of Andy Murray at a Shanghai tennis tournament drew chuckles, including from the star himself: “I thought I was better looking than that.”

It wasn’t always this way. In classical times, sculptors “had absolutely no interest in depicting people accurately,” explained Lucy Branch, a London-based sculptural conservator.

“What they ended up doing quite often, they recycled sculptures so when another athlete became more prominent, they just changed the name on the plaque,” said Branch, host of the “Sculpture Vulture” podcast.

“There’s this idea now, in this era, that commemorative sculpture should be like portraiture — it should look exactly like the person they are commemorating. But actually that’s a really new idea in sculpture.”

To avoid pitfalls, here are some tips from sculptors: Do your research

London-based sculptor Hywel Pratley studied countless images of Queen Elizabeth II to create a memorial statue in the East Midlands town of Oakham.

“A good portrait sculpture is evidence of 1,000 decisions after 10,000 observations,” Pratley said.

In addition, Yorkshire county sculptor Steve Winterburn recommends getting close with a subject’s family and friends to help find characteristics.

“You don’t want it looking like a Madame Tussauds,” said Winterburn, who created a statue of five Rugby League greats at Wembley Stadium. “It still needs a bit of art in it, a bit of soul. That’s what makes art really sing.” Smile at your peril

The Ronaldo bust depicted the Portugal star smiling crookedly. Likewise, the Salah sculpture features the Egyptian smiling while celebrating a goal. In Miami, Wade’s mouth is open in the statue representing the moment the player famously jumped onto a courtside table and yelled “This is my house.”

It’s probably best avoided.

“It’s really difficult to do teeth looking good in sculpture,” Pratley said. Get the profile right

Start “by understanding the profile” before moving on to determine widths from the front view, Pratley said.

“Get the profile right and you will have won half the battle, because then you can have something at least that you can trust,” he said. “When you’re lost, you can say, ‘well I knew where I was then,’ — and you will get lost as a sculptor in the forms.

“There’s so many to understand. It’s not two dimensions, it’s three. There’s an exponential opportunity for everything to go wrong. If you’ve got the profile, then you can go forward with more confidence.” The eyes have it?

Winterburn tries to make the eyes “come alive” in his work.

“The eye is the soul of the person that carries it,” he said. “If you look at a lot of public work, I’m not being funny, they’re dead. There’s nothing in them, they’re just featureless, soulless. With a painting, if in doubt, fade it out. With sculpture, there is nowhere to hide.”

For Pratley, especially when he is working with a live model, “I’m often struck by how the absolute essence of somebody is somewhere between the nostrils and the mouth. The flicker of muscles and the subtle movement of muscles around the mouth is so much you — it’s so much that person.” On a pedestal?

Commemorative sculpture historically has been on plinths, Branch notes.

“Part of the reason for that is because we put our heroes on a pedestal,” she said. “The problem is, the lower to the ground the sculpture is, the more scrutiny it’s going to get and the less it can get away with not looking quite right.”

The Kane sculpture features the England captain seated.

“Being so low, people get to look at it incredibly closely,” Branch said. “It’s trying to get sculpture to be more with the people, but then that comes with its own problems.” Vote on it

In the UK, local councils — like a city council in the US — might propose a project, fund it and select the sculptor, sometimes with little input from the public and limited vetting of artists.

Branch says there’s a better way: Vote on it.

That’s what happened for the Emmeline Pankhurst statue in Manchester. A selection committee used an online platform to get public input and Hazel Reeves’ proposal to honor the suffragette won.

“It is a really good balance and check for whether people on the committees have chosen the right sculptor or the right composition for that person who is being commemorated,” Branch said. “ may not necessarily be highly educated about sculpture, but they always tend to know whether the artist has hit the nail on the head.”

Embracing the digital battlefield of ‘Caliphate’ warriors

Embracing the digital battlefield of ‘Caliphate’ warriors

In a world where digital landscapes have become the new battlefield, the forces of terrorism are constantly evolving, finding ways to adapt and persevere against increasingly stringent sanctions. Although traditional battlefields have been replaced by keyboards and screens, the ideology and motivations of extremist groups remain as powerful as ever. The Internet is no longer just a tool; It has become a powerful weapon for the rapid spread of ideas, recruitment and covert communication. As technology advances, the War on Terror may never truly be “over”, as those living on the margins of society are constantly inventing new methods of resilience and adaptability.

Digital Age (images for representation)
Digital Age (images for representation)

This shift is exemplified by Voice of Khorasan, an English-language magazine from the Al-Azaim Media Foundation affiliated with the Islamic State Khorasan Province (ISKP). The 39th issue of the magazine offers its followers a wordy strategic guide, with detailed advice on how to remain anonymous on the Internet and avoid detection on social media platforms. Making historical comparisons, the publication frames these modern tactics through the lens of early Islamic history. It compares the digital struggles of ISKP supporters to the challenges faced by early Muslims, who migrated to Medina to establish a resilient community under the leadership of the Prophet Muhammad under severe opposition from the Quraysh in Mecca. Invoking this narrative, the article attempts to inspire resilience in today’s digital landscape, stating, “Today we face formidable challenges in the digital realm.”

This narrative underscores the evolving nature of insurgency in the digital age, where the battlefield has shifted from physical territories to vast and often unregulated expanses of cyberspace. The ability of groups like ISKP to adopt and leverage advanced technologies highlights the urgent need for comprehensive strategies to effectively counter these threats.

Technological innovations such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) and deepfake technology have revolutionized information dissemination. However, these devices have also been weaponized to spread disinformation, incite violence, and manipulate public perception. Cybercriminals exploit vulnerabilities in digital infrastructure, causing financial, political and social disruption. In response, nation-states are forced to reevaluate traditional security protocols to confront the increasing complexity of cyber threats.

Recognizing the vulnerabilities inherent in digital operations, IS has taken proactive steps to protect its communications and enhance its digital resilience. This is evident in the 39th issue of Voice of Khorasan, published in September 2024 by Al-Azaim Media Foundation, which provides strategic guidance to members and sympathizers. The magazine outlines ways to avoid surveillance, maintain anonymity, and protect communications, demonstrating the adaptability of Islamic States (IS) in navigating the digital sphere.

Publication serves several purposes, notably:

  • Operational Security (Opsec): Instructions for employing encryption, anonymization tools such as VPNs, and secure messaging platforms to avoid detection by intelligence agencies.
  • Propaganda: Strategies to effectively spread extremist narratives while minimizing risk, such as using disposable accounts and sanitizing metadata.
  • Counter-intelligence tactics: Awareness programs educate members about intelligence operations, preemptively countering infiltration attempts.

The challenges expressed in Voice of Khorasan reflect growing efforts by social media platforms to curb extremist content. Platforms now use sophisticated algorithmic detection, enforce strict community guidelines, and respond rapidly to government pressure. ISKP counters these measures by adopting avoidance tactics such as anonymous browsing, metadata sanitization, and avoiding flagged keywords.

A particularly notable parallel is drawn with early Islamic history, where Muslims faced persecution in Mecca before finding refuge in Medina. This historical framing is intended to inspire digital resilience among ISKP supporters, portraying modern challenges as ideological and existential battles faced by the early Muslim community.

Issue 39 of Voice of Khorasan showcases ISKP’s ability to embrace the digital economy by soliciting donations via Monero. A poster in the magazine encourages supporters to donate with the cryptocurrency Monero (XMR) to wage jihad with money and finance those who are waging jihad with their lives.

This highlights ISKP’s use of privacy-focused financial technologies to fund its operations. The magazine also details how AI tools are leveraged to create counter-narratives and generate automated promotional materials, demonstrating the group’s technological sophistication. These developments pose significant challenges to counterterrorism efforts, allowing the rapid and targeted spread of extremist ideologies.

The enduring appeal and reach of extremist content, such as that found in Voice of Khorasan, highlights the persistent threat posed by digital extremism. It has been assessed that the existence of a virtual caliphate has provided individuals with widespread access to groups like IS, particularly through platforms such as Rocket.Chat and Telegram. Such assessment underscores the effectiveness of ISKP’s digital strategies, which continue to resonate globally despite monitoring and enforcement efforts. The ability of such content to circulate widely reflects the adaptability of extremist groups in leveraging technology to maintain relevance and avoid detection.

However, the problem is not just the scale of proliferation, but also the technological sophistication underpinning it. Magazines like Voice of Khorasan demonstrate the seamless integration of emerging technologies like AI and cryptocurrency to advance extremist agendas. These tools enable the creation of highly targeted propaganda, automated counter-narratives, and financial anonymity, rendering traditional counter-terrorism measures increasingly inadequate.

Counterterrorism and cybersecurity experts emphasize the need for innovative and collaborative approaches to counter these threats. Leading digital forensics expert Dr Hany Farid explains that integrating cryptocurrencies and AI into propaganda systems underlines the need for real-time intervention and collaboration between governments and tech companies. This observation underlines the dual need for rapid detection mechanisms and public-private partnerships to disrupt the flow of extremist content and funding.

Dr. Gabriel Weimann, a professor at the University of Haifa, agrees with this sentiment and calls the Internet a “virtual training camp for terrorist groups.” He warned that the complexity of the digital domain demands technological innovation and international cooperation. As extremist groups cross borders, strategies must also be developed to counter them.

Similarly, the Deputy Attorney General of the United States, Lisa Monaco, emphasizes the importance of preventive rather than merely reactive measures. “Combating digital extremism requires not only detection but also preventative strategies – algorithmic transparency, strong moderation, and empowering communities with counter-narratives,” she insists. This call for a multi-layered approach highlights the importance of understanding the socio-technical intersection of extremism, where technology and ideology intersect in challenging ways.

Additionally, governments should invest in digital literacy and promote credible content to reduce the appeal of extremist propaganda. This perspective highlights the need to promote educational initiatives and authentic information to counter the influence of extremist ideologies.

These expert opinions collectively suggest that tackling digital extremism is a multidimensional challenge that requires a mix of technical, collaborative and community-driven approaches. While algorithms and artificial intelligence can identify and remove harmful content, human-centric interventions, such as promoting credible counter-narratives and promoting digital literacy, are equally essential. Despite enforcement, the enduring engagement with extremist content demonstrates that technology alone cannot solve the issue – it requires a comprehensive, globally coordinated effort that integrates technological solutions with socio-political strategies .

The irony is that while terrorist groups like IS are rapidly adapting to the digital landscape, state actors and global organizations are often left behind. The lessons to be learned from IS’s Digital Survival Guide are sobering:

  • Awareness and education: Public awareness initiatives and digital literacy programs are important to combat misinformation and reduce susceptibility to extremist narratives.
  • Global cooperation: A unified coalition of nations, technology companies, and civil society must address the borderless nature of digital threats.
  • Technology investment: It is imperative to develop advanced AI tools to detect deepfakes, track suspicious transactions, and enhance platform security.

As the war on terror has shifted from physical to digital, extremist groups are constantly evolving to overcome the obstacles. Their ability to navigate sanctions, employ algorithmic workarounds, and exploit modern technologies like cryptocurrency and AI highlights the continuing complexity of counterterrorism efforts.

The digital battlefield is no longer a distant frontier – it is immediate reality. To reclaim this space, governments, corporations and civil society need to act with ingenuity, urgency and collaboration. By understanding and foreseeing the strategies adopted by groups like ISKP, stakeholders can better anticipate risks and prepare effective countermeasures.

The question remains: Can global efforts evolve fast enough to neutralize these emerging threats, or will extremist groups continue to dominate the cyberspace arms race? The answer lies in whether we can adapt as quickly and effectively as those who seek to exploit the digital age for violence and division.

Justin And Hailey Bieber Celebrate Baby Jack's First Autumn With Heartwarming Family Moments

Los Angeles: Singer-songwriter Justin Bieber and his wife Hailey Bieber recently celebrated their baby’s first Autumn.

Hailey shared some pictures taken throughout the month of November on Friday on her social media. The pictures included a wholesome family moment spent with the ‘Baby’ singer, 30, and apparently their son Jack Blues, whom they welcomed in August, reports ‘People’ magazine.

The first photo in Hailey’s latest carousel post showed the proud parents seemingly holding their bundled-up son as they went for an outdoor stroll in recent weeks.

As per ‘People’, in the picture, the model could be seen smiling with her boys as she rocked a black Fila cap, a pair of shades and a cozy jacket to cover baby Jack (who faced away from the camera), while Justin wore a black camo outfit and made a silly face at the camera as Hailey smiled.

She wrote in the caption, “November, the best month of the year”. Other snaps in the carousel post featured a few other personal and professional highlights from Hailey’s November, including images of some new Rhode products, a handful of selfies and a shot of some cinnamon rolls.

While the latest post arrives after Hailey and Justin had their first Thanksgiving with their baby boy, the proud parents also posted about their first Halloween with him.

Justin also shared a series of photos on Instagram which depicted the newly minted family of three’s first Halloween costume together. In the family photos, the singer could be seen holding his son, who was dressed in a pink onesie, as Hailey held out a hand and wore a red wig. The couple matched the looks in black T-shirts and cargo pants, wearing utility belts around their waists.

Now Streaming: Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce's romance inspired two Christmas movies; where to watch

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s headline-making romance has inspired two festive films, perfect to kick off your holiday season. Love, football, and holiday cheer – it’s a recipe Lifetime and Hallmark couldn’t resist! What happens when the world’s biggest pop star falls for a football legend? Christmas in the Spotlight, starring Jessica Lord, and Holiday Touchdown: A Chiefs Love Story, by Julie Sherman Wolfe, have the answer. Whether you’re a Swiftie or an NFL fan, here’s everything you need to know to stream these holiday treats!

How to watch Christmas in the Spotlight

Christmas in the Spotlight premiered on November 23, 2024, just in time for the Thanksgiving holiday. This “Swelce”-inspired movie, loosely based on the romance between Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce, follows the story of Bowyn (Jessica Lord), a blonde pop star, and Drew (Laith Wallschleger), a football player. You can watch the film on Lifetime through live TV streaming services like Philo, which offers a 7-day free trial and includes Lifetime in its channel lineup. Alternatively, you can also catch it on DirecTV Stream.

What is Christmas in the Spotlight about?

If you’ve been following the love story of 14-time Grammy winner Taylor Swift and Kansas City tight end Travis Kelce, this storyline might feel familiar. Much like Taylor and Travis’ romance, which sparked last summer and quickly saw them cheering each other on at stadiums and concerts, Christmas in the Spotlight mirrors the same story, following pop star Bowyn and football player Drew as they navigate love in the public eye.

Their relationship faces challenges from paparazzi, opinionated fans, and Bowyn’s jealous ex, who stirs controversy by twisting her words. To make amends, Bowyn writes a heartfelt song for Drew, confessing her love and promising not to “fumble” again. As Lifetime teases, the pair must decide by the holiday season if their love can withstand the spotlight or fade away. The show also stars, Jeannie Mai and Haley Kalil.

How to watch Holiday Touchdown: A Chiefs Love Story

if you’re done with the first movie, there’s more to enjoy! Hallmark Channel is set to premiere Holiday Touchdown: A Chiefs Love Story this Saturday, November 30. Interestingly, this festive film is a co-production with the NFL, so keep an eye out for some familiar faces, including Travis Kelce’s mother, Donna.

While the story centers on a romance, it isn’t a direct nod to Travis and Taylor. Instead, it tells the story of a Kansas City Chiefs superfan and the team’s director of fan engagement as they start falling for each other. You can watch the movie on Hallmark Channel if you have cable, or stream it through services like Philo, DirecTV Stream, FrndlyTV, and Fubo, which offer free trials.

What is Holiday Touchdown: A Chiefs Love Story about?

Although Holiday Touchdown: A Chiefs Love Story is centered around the Chiefs star, its writer, Julie Sherman Wolfe, is actually a San Francisco 49ers fan. She revealed that she received the call to write the film just a week after Super Bowl LVIII, where the Chiefs defeated the 49ers. “I was still nursing my wounds,” Wolfe admitted, laughing. “But when Hallmark asked if I could separate myself from the loss to write the movie, I said, ‘Absolutely. I’m a professional,” she said according to AP.

Set against the backdrop of the Kansas City Chiefs, the story follows Derrick, a new hire at the team, who falls in love with Alana, a dedicated fan whose family owns a local Chiefs memorabilia store. As they bond over the team’s traditions, including Christmas decorations and family gatherings, sparks fly between them. The film blends holiday cheer, football, and family values.
