Why HP Is Offering On-Device AI Chatbots Powered by GPT-4, Explains Vineet Gehani

HP launched the first generation of its artificial intelligence (AI) PCs in India, the HP EliteBook Ultra and HP OmniBook X. Both devices are powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X series chipsets and feature the dedicated Copilot key, which gives them the Copilot+ PC moniker. The OmniBook X is targeted towards retail consumers whereas the EliteBook Ultra is aimed at enterprise customers. Apart from featuring Microsoft’s OS-based AI features, HP has also innovated the devices with a few first-party AI features.

HP Introduces AI Features in Its AI PCs

Among the HP-provided AI features, the most interesting is an on-device AI chatbot, HP AI Companion, powered by OpenAI’s GPT-4. Packaged as an app, it offers general AI chatbot capabilities where users can ask queries and get responses. It also has an Analyze feature where users can upload documents, PDFs, and text files, and the AI will process them and answer questions about them. The company says the AI chatbot functions entirely offline, so the data never leaves the device.

Additionally, HP is integrating new AI features into the webcam powered by Poly, the company it acquired in November 2022. Users get access to features such as Spotlight that improve the lighting of the person in the frame, background blur, AI-powered filters, and auto framing. Apart from that, Poly Studio also enhances sound quality and reduces noise.

Further, the enterprise-focused devices are also equipped with HP Wolf Pro Security NGAV, an anti-virus software which uses machine learning to learn and update itself about new virus and malware attacks.

Understanding HP’s AI Offerings

HP’s AI offerings are interesting, as it is the only laptop manufacturer that has introduced first-party AI features. However, it also raises a few questions. The HP AI Companion, while a useful tool, will be competing with Microsoft’s Copilot’s chatbot capabilities. The choice of going for the closed model GPT-4 instead of an open-source model such as Mixtral or Llama is also interesting.

Gadgets 360 spoke with Vineet Gehani, Senior Director – Personal Systems category, HP India, to decode these questions and simplify the increasingly competitive AI PC segment. During the interaction, we covered the above-mentioned topics and tried to understand the relevance of AI PCs in present times.

HP AI Companion: A Secure Way to Use AI Chatbots

HP’s AI Companion, powered by GPT-4, is localised entirely within the device. There is an option available to connect it to the server for more complex tasks, but the user has the option whether or not to turn it on. At first glance, this would appear to be a more secure option compared to server-based AI chatbots.

“Everybody wants to do more, but they want to do it for themselves and not necessarily from a public sharing perspective. That is where the private HP AI Companion helps. That’s where all the security features come in.” Gehani said. He further added, taking in a holistic perspective of data security, “We stand by the ethical use of AI capabilities. We have the right firewalling and the right protection equipped against that.”

But will a first-party local AI create friction with Microsoft? The question is relevant since Microsoft is aggressively pushing to dominate the AI PC space with the dedicated Copilot button, and its Windows OS comes with several Copilot-powered features. However, while Copilot sits on the device, the processing of the queries and generation of responses takes place on the cloud, which might make some users apprehensive about data security and privacy.

However, Gehani does not believe there is any scope for friction. “We see this to be complementary. Microsoft is enriching the AI ecosystem with Copilot features such as Cocreate and Live Captions. HP is offering a layer over that. I don’t see this as competing but as a complementary service.”

The Need for a Dedicated Copilot Key

While announcing the AI PC terminology, Microsoft urged original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to add a Copilot key to qualify their device as either Copilot PC or Copilot+ PC. However, does the key hold any relevance for the end consumer?

“It gives you AI at your fingertips and makes using the AI that much easier. You can just tap the button to take the app live without having to navigate it via multiple clicks. It gives a better experience and makes it more intuitive, Gehani explained.

The Relevance of AI PCs

Despite AI PCs arriving on the market, the average consumer does not have a lot of use case for it. While asking the chatbot a bunch of questions might be fun for a while, the novelty wears off soon. Microsoft has offered several interesting features, but apps and experiences are still limited due to the lack of third-party apps with AI integration. The question that arises is whether the end consumer should invest in devices that have a powerful neural processing unit (NPU) but not enough use cases for them.

“We look at this from two lenses. For business users, it is about data scientists being able to do more. It is about corporate users getting more real-time inference from their workflows. There are also use cases of doing the work faster, more collaboratively, and multitasking,” Gehani said, highlighting that these features are already available with the current generation of AI PCs.

For the retail consumers, it is an evolving journey, explained the HP India Senior Director. While AI can and will provide newer experiences and features in the future. Currently, a big focus is also on improving the existing features. Giving a few examples, Gehani said generative AI is also assisting in improving hybrid work experiences, making audio and video conferences more intuitive, and providing a better battery life in a portable device. He claims that HP laptops have already made significant advancements in providing these experiences. As far as new experiences are concerned, Gehani remains confident that these will soon arrive as well.

In her interview with Zoom, Riddhima was asked about the judgments around Ranbir and several labels against him including misogynist, she said,” They adore each other. They’ve created the most beautiful ever child, Raha. She is so so adorable. They are amazing parents. So, I don’t think they really care about what people say”.

Riddhima even revealed why Ranbir chose an intimate wedding,” So, Ranbir was like you know what we’ve had a big wedding in the family, a big huge celebration and I want to keep mine…, and both of them, Ranbir and Alia are very simple people, and they were like we want to do it very chhota (small). Saber-Toothed Kitten Preserved for 37,000 Years Found in Siberian Ice

A 37,000-year-old saber-toothed kitten, preserved in near-perfect condition, has been unearthed in the Siberian permafrost, shedding light on an extinct predator. The discovery was made in 2020 near the Badyarikha River, north of the Arctic Circle. The frozen remains, which include the head, forelimbs, and upper body, belong to the species Homotherium latidens. This late Pleistocene creature, estimated to have lived 35,500–37,000 years ago, offers an unprecedented glimpse into its anatomy and appearance.

Radiocarbon dating and dental analysis conducted by researchers indicate that the cub was around three weeks old at the time of its death. The baby incisors emerging in its jaw served as a key clue. Scientists believe its life was cut short by an abrupt event that left its body frozen in pristine condition.

Detailed Preservation Reveals Unique Features

The kitten’s body, covered with soft brown fur, retains intact whiskers on its lips and well-preserved footpads, alongside sharp claws. Researchers have emphasised the significance of these soft tissues in understanding the anatomy of saber-toothed cats, details that fossilised skeletons have long failed to reveal.

Dr Andrey Lopatin, a palaeontologist from the Russian Academy of Sciences and lead author of the study published in Scientific Reports, noted that the cub’s stout neck is double the thickness of that seen in modern lions. Its muscular build and broad feet suggest adaptations for snowy environments, offering evidence of behavioural traits similar to today’s big cats.

Insights into Evolutionary Distinctiveness

Although Homotherium shared similarities with modern lions, its shorter body, longer legs, and unique proportions were observed even in this juvenile specimen. Dr Lopatin highlighted that this anatomical structure hints at the predator’s ability to hunt in cold, harsh climates.

This discovery broadens our knowledge about Homotherium and also provides a rare, tangible connection to prehistoric ecosystems.

Microsoft Introduces Copilot for Finance, an AI Tool to Streamline Enterprise Finance Tasks

Microsoft unveiled a new artificial intelligence (AI) tool called Copilot for Finance on Thursday, aiming to help financial professionals easily navigate everyday mundane tasks. The Copilot tool is not a new AI model, and instead builds on the existing Copilot for Microsoft 365 stack to bring new features specific to financial operations. It is an enterprise-focused AI tool and currently is available in public preview. Notably, the tech giant also announced new features and major improvements for Windows 11 through a new update.

Announcing the new AI tool in a blog post, Microsoft positioned its new product as a way to free up the time for finance departments in organisations so they can focus on strategic tasks instead of mundane analysis and report making. The company also highlighted a data point from the CFO magazine and stated that 62 percent of surveyed finance professionals listed “drudgery of data entry and review cycles” as a reason for not finding time for strategic tasks.

Copilot for Finance, as per the tech giant, automates many financial tasks that would otherwise take long hours for users. It can perform a long list of tasks such as conducting a variance analysis in Excel using natural language prompts, reconciling data in Excel with automated data structure comparisons, providing complete summary of relevant customer account details, turning raw data into visuals and reports, and more.

The tech giant also highlighted that since Copilot for Finance is not a new AI model and can work on top of existing Copilot for Microsoft 365, it can seamlessly draw context from an organisation’s existing financial data sources such as Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems as well as other similar repositories.

Microsoft’s new AI tool joins its other two operation-specific tools — Copilot for Sales and Copilot for Service. The former can generate sales meeting briefs, add leads and update CRM records, as well as other analysis and generative tasks. The latter, which is aimed for people-facing roles, can generate AI-powered conversations with a single click, access knowledge about customers from other systems, schedule and recap meetings, draft emails, and more. Both of these tools are generally available to Microsoft 365 customers.

Samsung Galaxy S25 Slim Reportedly Spotted on IMEI Database

Samsung Galaxy S25 Slim could join the Galaxy S25 series next year. The lineup usually includes a base, a Plus, and an Ultra variant. However, there could be a new model next year. As the name suggests, the Slim version is expected to be thinner than the other models. It is tipped to compete with the purported iPhone 17 Slim or iPhone 17 Air. Not much is known about the expected features of the Galaxy S25 Slim, but it has now reportedly been spotted on the IMEI database.

Samsung Galaxy S25 Slim Listing

The Samsung Galaxy S25 Slim was spotted on the IMEI database with the model number SM-S937, according to a Smartprix report. A US variant of the handset with the model number SM-S937U appeared on the website as well. This suggests that the phone could launch in both the US and global markets.

Notably, the purported Samsung Galaxy S25 carries the SM-S931 model number, while the Galaxy S25+ and Galaxy S25 Ultra models have the model numbers SM-S936 and SM-S938, respectively.

Samsung Galaxy S25 Slim Launch Timeline

An earlier report claims that the Samsung Galaxy S25 Slim is expected to be introduced in Q2 2025, a few months after the Galaxy S25 series launch. The thinner version could see a limited release as the company is said to gauge customer response to the handset.

While not much is known about the rumoured Samsung Galaxy S25 Slim, it is expected to arrive with watered-down features compared to the base Galaxy S25 model, similar to the Fan Edition models.

Notably, the anticipated Samsung Galaxy S25, Galaxy S25+, and Galaxy S25 Ultra variants have been tipped to be slimmer than the preceding Galaxy S24 series handsets. Previous reports suggested that all Samsung Galaxy S25 smartphones will carry Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 8 Elite chipsets.

Samsung recently confirmed that the Samsung Galaxy S25 lineup will be unveiled in the first half of 2025. An exact launch date will likely be announced closer to the event. It is expected to arrive sometime in January or February.

Sony Set to Release PS VR2 Steam App Next Month, Bringing Support for PC VR Games

Sony Set to Release PS VR2 Steam App Next Month, Bringing Support for PC VR Games

Sony has been testing PC games support for the PlayStation VR2 to expand the library of VR titles available on the headset this year. The PlayStation parent had announced last month that it would roll out PC support for PS VR2 on August 7. A PS VR2 application has now surfaced on Steam and will bring access to PC VR titles on the platform when it launches next month. The PlayStation VR2 Steam app, which will let players experience virtual reality titles and apps available on Valve’s storefront, is coming on August 6.

PS VR2 Steam app

According to the Steam page for the app, players will be able to set up their PS VR2 headset on their PCs and access the library of VR titles and apps on Steam. The app will also allow players to update the firmware for the PS VR2 headset and PS VR2 Sense controllers. Additionally, players will be able to adjust PS VR2 settings from the SteamVR dashboard, including defining the play area for the headset and adjusting screen brightness.

The access the PS VR2 Steam app, players will need the PS VR2 headset, PS VR2 Sense controllers and the PS VR2 PC adapter.

The PlayStation VR2 PC adapter will be available for an estimated retail price of $59.99 (roughly Rs. 5,000) at select retail stores and direct.playstation.com in supported regions. Additionally, players would also need a DisplayPort cable compatible with DisplayPort 1.4, an active Steam account and a PC that meets minimum requirements.

Last month, Sony had announced that it would be rolling out support for PC VR games for PS VR2 on August 7. The company had confirmed that players would be able to access Steam’s VR library, including games like Half-Life: Alyx, Fallout 4 VR and War Thunder.

PS VR2 cutbacks

The PS VR2 was launched in February 2023 and has since struggled to attract players with its limited games library and incompatibility with PS VR titles. While Sony has continued to release new VR titles for PS VR2, a report last month claimed that the company was making “deep cuts” to funding for VR titles.

Earlier this year in February, Sony shut down its London Studio, the developer behind PlayStation VR Worlds, and made cuts at Horizon: Call of the Mountain developer Firesprite.

New Biosensor in Seatbelts Tracks Driver Stress and Health Levels

A breakthrough in biosensor technology could enable the real-time monitoring of stress and alertness in drivers and pilots. Developed by researchers from the National University of Singapore and Tsinghua University, the device, integrated into seatbelts, tracks heartbeat and respiration without needing direct contact with the skin. This innovation, detailed in Nature Electronics, promises to enhance safety in vehicles and aircraft by reliably gathering cardiopulmonary data even in dynamic environments.

The device incorporates metamaterials, which are advanced engineered materials, to optimise signal transmission. Conductive threads in a comb-shaped pattern are embroidered into the seatbelt, allowing radio waves to interact with the user’s body. Xi Tian, co-author of the study, explained that this design helps minimise environmental interference, such as vibrations from moving vehicles, while maintaining sensitivity to physiological signals. A processing system was implemented to ensure that the collected data remains consistent and reliable during motion.

Real-World Testing Highlights Reliability

Tests carried out in a car and an airline cabin simulator revealed the biosensor’s ability to conform to the user’s body and detect physiological signals in challenging conditions. It maintained accuracy during a 1.5-hour vehicle route in Singapore and identified heart rate variations in an aircraft setting, enabling sleep-wake detection. Tian highlighted that these results demonstrate the device’s potential for consistent health monitoring across varied environments.

Future Applications and Advancements

Further research aims to refine the technology for mass production, with a focus on compact and cost-effective designs. Tian stated that collaborations with automotive manufacturers are planned to validate the system in real-world applications. The development of algorithms to interpret data for fatigue and stress assessments is also in progress. This biosensor could become an essential feature in transport, helping prevent accidents by ensuring drivers and pilots remain alert.

Coldplay 'Infinity Tickets' sold out; fans tweet 'system is rigged' as tickets to Mumbai and Ahmedabad concerts sell instantly

“When you try your best, but you don’t succeed,” said fans as they lost out on yet another chance to get a ticket to the upcoming Coldplay ‘Music of the Spheres’ concert in January 2025.
On Friday, it was announced that the much-anticipated ‘Infinity Tickets‘ for the band’s Mumbai and Ahmedabad concerts would go on sale at 12 noon. However, even those who queued up well in time for the shot at getting their golden ticket, were left disappointed. The highly coveted special low-cost tickets, priced at just Rs 2,000, were snapped up almost instantly upon release, leaving countless waiting in their virtual queue for over 30 mins before they gave up.

The overwhelming demand sparked an outcry on social media, with many fans expressing frustration over the ticketing system. One user even tagged the Mumbai Police and alleged a ‘ticket scam’ at play. The fan tweeted, “Now tickets r sold out! Please confirm how many tickets were issued since my queue # only moved by 80. @MumbaiPolice Shd do an impartial investigation.”

Disappointed fans took to Twitter to vent their frustrations, alleging that the system was unfair or “rigged.”Many fans pointed fingers at bots or resellers, claiming they had no chance to secure tickets despite being online well before the sale started. A fan complained, “Coldplay infinity tickets sold out in seconds, 98% probably headed straight to resell. Let’s stop feeding these greedy resellers! If we all refuse to buy, they’ll have no choice but to sell at face value closer to the concert. Let’s make them sweat!”
Still another said, “yet another @bookmyshow let down how is the queue for infinity tickets for coldplay going up to 97k when tickets are so few in number? also, no movement in the queue number since 30 mins.”
Another asked, “how it already sold out when the queue was literally stuck at the same number for an whole hour????? did anyone even end up getting the infinity tickets pls lmk”
“Started at 272 . Now at 90 for Ahmedabad show….number ain’t moving since last half an hour….” read another post.

Fans were required to purchase the Infinity Tickets in pairs, with seating locations assigned randomly. The affordable pricing, coupled with Coldplay’s massive fanbase in India, meant the tickets were sold out in moments.

Coldplay’s upcoming concerts in India have generated massive excitement. The band will perform in 3 shows in Mumbai and follow it up with 2 shows in Ahmedabad, marking their first visit to the country since their iconic Global Citizen Festival performance in 2016.
The Music of the Spheres World Tour has been a global phenomenon, with fans flocking to stadiums across Europe and the United States to see Chris Martin and the band perform their hits.
